BN Exclusive: FABULOUS at 30! Inside Miss World 2001 Agbani Darego’s Birthday Soirée in Lagos | Beautiful People, Delicious Food, Amazing Decor & More

BN Exclusive Agbani Darego's 30th Birthday - January 2013 - BellaNaija055

We knew Agbani Darego‘s 30th birthday party would be great but we had no idea it would be this fabulous. On Sunday the 6th of January, 2013, Agbani Darego hosted an intimate dinner to celebrate her 30th Birthday at the Wheatbaker Hotel, Ikoyi. In addition to friends of the model, the celebration attracted prominent personalities in the fashion, entertainment and media industry including Nike Oshinowo, Folake Folarin-Coker, Bola Balogun, Daisy Danjuma, Ruth Osime, Stephanie Okereke, Lanre DaSilva-Ajayi, Funke Kuku, Don Jazzy, Dr. Sid, M.I, Bez, Tiwa Savage and Baketmouth amongst others.

The evening kicked-off with a cocktail reception. On arrival, the elegantly styled guests were presented with fine wine and champagne as they mingled in the room filled with familiar faces. Agbani greeted guests in a black Stella McCartney stunner! The one-sleeved illusion cut-out dress, which she accessorized with black Miu Miu sandals and classic diamond studs was the perfect choice for a dramatic entrance.

Soon afterwards, guests were lured in into the banquet hall for dinner and Agbani joined them in a green Roland Mouret dress which featured a peek-a-boo back and zipper detail.

Exquisitely decorated by Newton & David, the never ending dinner table was lit up with candles and complemented by pink Roses, white Calla lilies, Queen Anne’s lace and white Chrysanthemums which gave the room a soft, feminine and alluring feel. Guests wrote their wishes for the celebrant and hung it on the wish tree just before they sat down to enjoy the specially selected four course meal.

Following the welcoming speech by Bola Balogun of Glam Networks, close friends and associates including Chalya Shagaya, Ojy Okpe and Kelechi Amadi-Obi shared heart-warming words and then the man behind her first crown as the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria in 2001, Ben Murray-Bruce who attended the event with his wife, gave a touching toast in Agbani’s honour. This was one of the major highlights of the evening; everyone got emotional, including Agbani who shed a few tears.

Artist and friend, ChiDynma serenaded the birthday girl to her delight as she cut the immaculately crafted vintage inspired cake by Cakes by Tosan. It was truly a splendid evening filled with love, laughter and smiles.

Special thanks to No Surprises Events. Enjoy the official photos by Jide Alakija.

Cocktail Hour
Agbani chatted with guests including Stepahanie Okereke, Daisy Danjuma and Dr. SID during the cocktail hour  while they enjoyed great wine and cocktails! Love love love the black Stella McCartney dress.

      January 9, 2013 at 2:37 pm

Overdone? Anyone can do whatever the Phuck they want they want for their birthday. Many people haven’t lived to see their 30th year on earth. Not everyone will make history before their 30th birthday or even their lifetime. She deserves to celebrate the hell out of her birthday. She can have a cake as big as any of your criminal leaders’ houses if she likes. The celebrant and photography look great! Beautiful event too. Uti, Alex, and Karen weren’t there. Lol.

      January 9, 2013 at 3:33 pm

Ose jare. You forgot to mention, Toke, Eku, Mabel makun (she’s even getting scarce a bit now, finally she got the memo) and all the rest red carpet ………. (fill in the blank spaces). I was quite surprised to see even Annie in attendance. Still trying to figure out who she perched on, cos since she’s been Mrs Idibia, the i must be seen everywhere and social climbing is sth else.

    • Abeg

      January 9, 2013 at 5:21 pm

you sef stop blabbing. yes I said it. the cake is over done! that one burn you? go and hug a transformer jor… it’s a beautiful party and i didn’t say otherwise did I?

    • Jo

      January 9, 2013 at 5:42 pm

Typical Nigerian with no idea on how to use their brains to argue. It’s O.K to disagree with your opinion. After all, we are stating our “opinions”. No fact here because there is no law on what a birthday cake must look like. There is no need to say “go and hug a transformer”.

    • Mz Socially Awkward...

      January 10, 2013 at 2:58 pm

I have a sister who didn’t live to see 30. So in my opinion, celebrating your 3rd decade of life (especially if you’ve managed to record a lot of achievements during the years leading to it) is not over done. This is why a lot of Nigerians fail to enjoy the richness of life, regardless of where they currently are on their individual walks. They wait for that “something big” as their justification to feel good about themselves, while ignoring what they consider to be “little” achievements. So you want her to wait for her wedding day before going all out on a cake? What makes you think there isn’t a bigger more elaborate wedding cake design in her future? How very pedestrian.

Lovely pics. Agbani; stunning. Laughing at the wedding cake comments. Same thing i thought too. Madam Nike’s face looks puffy and i’ll blame Chalya’s complexion on lighting. Ruth should dress like this more, well covered and as usual Nkiru Anumudu never fails. She looks rather sane here.

Jide Alakija’s photography skills are what i’m wowed about. he doesnt disappoint every time. His camera is amazing, and his good use of light and angles. Everyone’s skin pops, like really pops, glistening, smooth and shiny. That’s good photgraphy for you, in a well lit room. Dont be deceived. Very good candid shots too. Well done Sir, can I hire you for my wedding. Its either you or the guy from The Atunbi experience. You’ve seen one upscale party you’ve seen them all. Apparently we dont see enough of them, so when we do classy suddenly becomes the word of the day. Lol. Newton and David, still waiting for you to wow me o. These days your work is just bleh. Nice gathering of celebs I must say. In my opinion, this is all so fake. A celeb studded 30th instead of one to spend with family and ‘real’ close friends you have know from way back plus new (acquired) relevant people). Are there any Abuloma girls here apart from celeb Chydyma? How many? People who truly care and not because they think you are something. Anyway, that’s my opinion. I hope she looks back in 20 years and she’s happy about her 30th bash knowing all these socialites and social climbers alike are still her friends.

Her real family and friends ke, why you dey talk like this. So that they will feel oppressed. Just joking. I concur. I thought about it too, but decided not to comment so voltrons won’t call me a hater. I think she’s re-introducing herself into the 9ja movers and shakers scene. She’s been absent for a while, recently we’ve been seeing her face a lot. She didn’t cut it as a model abroad. Nothing to hate about, its true. Show me her portfolio. She’s 30 now, so in model age, the doors that didn’t open for you then, aint opening now. Especially when you didn’t hit it like dem Oluchi, Alek Wek and co. Na Miss Angola (Miss Universe 2011) dey reign now. Time to count your losses and move back home where you are still kinda relevant. You know we love to ooh and ahh here. Famzing things. She won Miss World ages ago, the world has long gone forgotten, but we can’t o. She’s our National treasure. So I think she’s back now, and she wants to move among the right kind of crowd. You get what I mean. This party does just that. Its called networking baby.

Now y’all going on about class this class that, has anyone bothered to look at the dishes. Why is there bone sticking out of the chicken that should have been served boneless in a supposed classy affair, potato wedges were served not Parmesan potatoes as stated on the menu, the sliced fruits on the dessert plate used as a garnish looks out of place and gross and what the heck is a sliced cracker doing on top a prawn cocktail that should be served chilled without any crunchy bits. It is about time we actually define what class means in Nigeria cos it has become the most trending word on naija blogs.

I was reading all comments then yours caught my eye. I decided to reply here. You are spot on. Classy is an overused word now. If you also look clearly, a lot of table manners and etiquettes are missing. Why would you have a wedding cake at a birthday party. Fail number one and so not classy biko.

    • Veronica

      January 10, 2013 at 12:14 pm

The word “etiquette” is the same in singular as it is in plural. There is no such word as “etiquettes”.

fully agree about the food. I’m disappointed in the Wheatbaker. The main cousre looks so sloppy. like something from a buffet at the Ramada….

but what does the average naija know about such things?? not much!

the world class is thrown around quite a bit these days….I think it just means anything which is not razz and local looking….

My point exactly, it’s sad agbani is no longer who she was. She can’t even stand most of the people in that room with her. Where is her family? Not even one from that large family of hers and most of them reside in Nigeria. Class entails a whole lot, pedigree and all. Unfortunately for some to wear good expensive clothes doesn’t make u classy. You can’t continually be controversial and careless with your affairs with the opposite sex and be considered classy. That being said great pictures and I hope moving forward she conducts herself properly since she loves the fame game and wants to be in the public eye.

My comment is to address all those people that can’t just comment about this party and move on. They have to drag the names of those not in attendance and use it as an opportunity to diss them. So not cool. This is an intimate birthday party, not a red carpet event or some public function. Agbani obviously invited those that she knows and those that are relevant to her reintroducing herself into the Nigerian scene. No go believe this was just a birthday party. For her so called “international model status” she should have celebrated her 30th at some fancy restaurant or club in New York/Paris/Milan surrounded by the “high class” people she thought were her crowd all these years she’s been away, and not people she probably hasn’t seen or spoken to in years. If you watched Gossip Girl you’ll know what I mean. They’ll spit you out as fast as they welcomed you. You are not one of them, and you’ll never be. This party has its uses, no be just come chop, take picture and go. Its very good PR, and I can see people lapping it up like chocolate.
I wonder where all New York and model/designer, fashion photographers friends are now. The people she was hanging around with all these while., and Nigeria wasn’t good enough. She didn’t cut it there, now she’s back and Nigerians are relevant now, and you dare call some other people social climbers. Ex Miss World now exempts you from social climbing. LMAO. I can see we still worship money in 9ja. All it takes, is to organise a party in a hotel, with all the trimmings money can pay for, and y’all are drooling as if you haven’t seen such before.
Its comments like this that pushes people to do anything for money, so they can meet up. Those other names you mentioned, they attended events they were invited for. They organised parties they could afford. Is there anything wrong with that. Abi. Do you know who bank rolled this party? Classy, this classy that don turn to word of the day. If you see those names you were dissing following one politician or business man, you’ll abuse them, runs girls, asewo. You can never please people. Most of you have never done one tenth with your life, that these people have done, yet you can trash talk them. Abi who knows you sef. Mschew. BN post my comments o, this trash talking people’s hustle is uncalled for

@lolita… You cannot judge our relevance to her by only works you know about. People are always doing things that they don’t want to appear on Lisa ikeji or BN for that matter. There are sooo many models in this world you have never heard off, but they are veryyyy well to do and have fat accounts, so just because she didn’t get to Naomi’s level, doesn’t mean she didn’t make her country and her family proud.

She’s a beautiful girl no doubt, and with all the opportunities that came with Miss World, she could have gone places, but hey she’s relevant in 9ja, that counts for something. Lol. Abi, we no be people too. Lolita free us o. Lol. She got global exposure in one day. Exposure it took other girls ages to develop, and their careers have exploded. What’s a “model” if you don’t know who she is. Tell me. Ask any aspiring model, she’ll tell you the same thing. Adrianna Lima, Iman, Naomi, Tyra, Giselle, Alessandra Ambrosio, Oluchi (who even shows her face in 9ja a lot – modelled for Victoria Secret) Alek Wek, Miranda Kerr, Iman, Heidi Klum, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Chanel Iman. Phew, can I continue? Like Lolita said, the world has long forgotten, only us, and it is still great that we honour her for it. She put us on the map, and did her family proud, so I’m not hating please. I’m also not knocking her hustle o, before Lolita will jump on my case too (well said Lolita btw), but as a “successful” model, hell yeah, we should know about your works. Abi do we know all those gorgeous girls i mentioned through LI and BN. Right now, Google her name, I’m sure you’ll see her massive portfolio (insert sarcasm), since you think its only on BN and LI we find information. A model’s version of success is crystal clear, you don’t have to go searching. The fact you have to search sef, tells you what you need to know (those models we have never heard of). Don’t use your 9ja mentality abeg.

Nkiru Anumudu – I am constantly puzzled at her choice when it comes to dressing. She is way past the age for those shoes and the dress may be worth a ton but it is not doing justice to her body. Agbani, you looked beautiful but the cake gave a mournful tone to the ceremony. Seems like you were declaring a marriage to yourself. I would have preferred something sassy and fun for a birthday for a beautiful single girl. You seemed to be saying since I am no where having the occassion to have a cake like this, I am going to force one on myself. Worrisome but fine girls always get wahala, abi?

Nice, clean crowd, bad PR for Wheatbaker sha, was not impressed with the decor and food, will not have a birthday dinner there now that I know what it will look like, they should have put their best food forward knowing press would be there. Agbani is lovely to look at and her guest list was perfect, that’s what covered the Wheatbaker’s sloppiness. Jide Alakija; awesome job!

Ok, just noticed that Newton & David is to blame for the decor, penned them down for my wedding a while back, but not being able to differentiate between wedding decor and a birthday party is bothersome. *raised eyebrow

Be sure to look out for Agbani in the look books of one or two of the designers in attendance. Or at least promoting their pieces on the red carpet. Lovely event! Very strategic party and one hell of a PR for her.

I understand all that. But i am feeling something intimate and special like a 30th Birthday Dinner should be celebrated with family and friends the real people.

Everybody were just great, especially our Queen. She is still “MISS WORLD” @ 30 to me! I don’t know if such beauty can still exist in Naija. How I wish that I’m a celeb, I would have married her
