“Subtle Glamour”! Nigerian Design Label Maki Oh presents its Spring 2013 Ready-To-Wear Collection Lookbook

Nigerian design label, Maki Oh has got all fashion lovers including BellaNaija Style excited with its Spring 2013 collection Lookbook.

In this Spring 2013 ready-to-wear collection displayed at the Arise African Icons Collective during New York Fashion Week 2013 in September, the label’s creative director, Maki Oh raises the extraordinary from the ordinary making use of local African fabrics including Adire.

According‘s Maya Singer, Maki Oh’s pieces are beautifully tailored, feminine, and elegant yet idiosyncratically modern. She knows how to make unexpected juxtapositions convincing.

The collection consists of fringe blouses and skirts, see-through dresses for a subtle sheer look, graphic printed tops and skirts as well as lace blouses. While the label’s famous clients include American singer and DJ Solange Knowles, actress Leelee Sobieski and Nigerian TV presenter Eku Edewor, our fashion instincts tell us we will probably see more style stars both home and abroad rocking one of the label’s pieces from the collection this year.

The model doesnt have the presence to carry the pieces but I love most of this. You didn’t mention that Maki oh was added to the roster of designers that are reviewed on This is a first for an Africa based designer and nothing short of a seal of approval from an industry that is less inclusive than people like to think. It’s ironic that the aesthetic that has garnered the attention of vogue et al is what will probably turn people off on homeground so she probably has a choice to make somewhere in the future.
She is very young and can only get better, I’m very excited for her

    January 13, 2013 at 2:34 am

Fashion is not basic for all. R u guys expecting to see what u get on the high street. These r well thought of designs. High end FASHION. If u don’t get it, fine! But dont go slagging someone’s hard work. The reason she is getting all this credit is cause the shut callers in the industry can see she isn’t ur back street copy cat tailor!!!

    January 14, 2013 at 9:28 pm

i never comment on bellanaija but seriously comments like this collection is boring unwearable bla bla is plain ignorance. everyone has different tastes but seriously some of these pieces are very very ideal for work… a sophisticated woman . and comments about her being fake are also ignorant.. unlike most naija designers she actually has an international market.. ppl abroad and in nigeria wear her clothes. shes ecccentric! different! fresh too !

  40. birdieblue

    January 14, 2013 at 10:36 pm

her pieces are so hunger games/ aeon flux, very futuristic in terms of cut I think… only someone with an attitude could wear most of them and not care about strange looks.

  41. roomandpalor

    January 15, 2013 at 2:27 am

Wow! Notice the subtle African accents? I love. I love. I love.

  42. Kween

    January 15, 2013 at 7:01 am

Why does Maki Oh have Illuminati ish all over! But why. See the eye of horus and the rays. And the designs are totally global worthy forget some of them might be unwearable. Its haute couture and she is going far with a little or a lotta help from the eye 🙁

  43. tribalwest

    January 15, 2013 at 8:30 am

Its just like ART not everbody gets it. I love them all

  44. Emeralds

    January 15, 2013 at 10:16 am

I thot they said “Ready to wear” they dont look ready to wear to me, looks more like it needs more work done on it, and is that a human or a Mannequin modeling the cloths? cos the body looked lifeless and didnt do the cloths any good, mayb she wasnt properly paid and we have beautiful black Nigerian models that would have flattered the cloths better. Also she wore the same shoe for all the cloths, haba if there was no money for a proper shoot why bother….

  45. zhelloyi

    January 15, 2013 at 10:25 am

This looks like style for the demented.

  47. Amina

    January 15, 2013 at 9:59 pm

She’s an artist! Artist, then a Business woman…she’ll go far, that’s if she hasn’t already. She clearly has passion for what she does. Not everyone gets art.. Welldone Maki oh! Love your collection!
