“There Was No Need For Kim Kardashian at Darey’s Concert! None Whatsoever” by Charles Novia

Nigerian movie director and producer Charles Novia in this interesting piece writes about the recently held Darey‘s “Love Like A Movie” concert and the “importance” of Kim Kardashian to the success of the show. It’s a must read!

I first met Darey in 1999 at Jazzville, a unique and bohemian music club of sorts which was the core pulse of the Lagos weekend social scene for many years up till 2001 when it was officially closed. Darey was a quiet young man then who would perform a few songs and play excellent notes on the keyboard. Then, I was somewhat of a total artiste moonlighting with stand-up comedy every Friday night there as the in-house emcee who took over from the late Mohammed Danjuma of blessed memory. For over a year, every Friday night I would guide the good-natured revellers through the program for the long night, with occassional singing with the band on my part. Within that period, I met Darey who actually was honing his skills through the Jazzville experience with the help of Muyiwa Majekudunmi, the founder of Jazzville.

Darey and I maintained some staccato contact for a few years after that and I have admirably watched his growth and ascendency on the Nigerian Music Scene with pride, being a ‘Jazzville alumnus’ like him.

He’s a perfect gentleman to the core, very composed and focused. Sterling qualities he got from his late father, the Maestro Art Alade of the popular ‘Bar Beach Show’ of the seventies on television. This Darey, a refined chip off the old block, a few hours ago showed the whole of Nigeria why he shouldn’t be underestimated in no way. His Valentine Concert, ‘Love…like a movie’ is just about the best musical concert in modern Nigerian history I have ever seen. And the thousands of guests who attended all agree with me.

The concert held at the Eko Hotel Expo Hall a couple of hours behind schedule. It took off at about 8.30pm and for nearly two hours, every member of the audience was held spellbound by the impressive mix of music, drama, pyrotechnics, visual effects, artistry and choreography of the biggest concert experience in Nigeria.

It was Darey all the way with the guest Nigerian artists all given deliberate moderation of appearances through the songs. The expansive hall went dark when the show was about to start and the huge stage screens were suddenly transformed into huge displays of beautiful moving visuals of techo- clip art and arresting picture projections.

Our eyes were made by the lighting to focus on the huge square multi-cubicles on the centre stage which was also the show’s backdrop. As the projected images fluidly came on the screen one after another, Darey shockingly appeared in the middle of one of the cubicles which seemed to open up to let him out. The crowd went wild at the effect and Darey sang ‘At all, at all’ featuring an absent 9ice. ‘Carry dey go’ followed and this time Tuface Idibia was transported onto the stage by some fairy-dancers with beautiful costumes. Thereafter, Darey sang some songs from his three albums and also took the crowd through some popular ballads such as ‘Lady in Red’, ‘Endless love’ (duet with Waje), ‘I’ll make love to you’ (featuring PSquare and Timi Dakolo), ‘End of the road’ and ‘What a wonderful world’ among others. When he performed the Frank Sinatra classic ‘My Way’, he twice said ‘Rest in Peace, Goldie’ and seemed to break down in some verses during the song. Perhaps with the poignant gloom of Goldie’s death still haunting him, the other original hit ballads of his, ‘Not the girl’ and ‘No stars’ had Darey wiping off tears from his eyes while singing both songs. The audience gave him a rapturous applause when he sang ‘Not the Girl’ and even sang along with him. ‘I like the way you are’ got a lot of people grooving.

It was not so much the songs he performed (which were all perfect) that got us all wowed but the incredible choreography of the Dance troupe, a caucasian ensemble, who mesmerised everyone with a combination of elaborate costumes, bio-constructivism and dance sequences which were simply breathtaking. Added to the lighting effects and the near-perfect stage management, the show ended with huge white balloons the size of SUV tires floating across the hall, giving the audience a retro-glimpse of childhood excitement at the balloons! There were a couple of down points in the concert though. A little microphone hitch for one of the singers during the rendition of ‘I will make love to you’ almost marred a perfect sing-along for the members of the audience.

Also, the much awaited Kim Kardashian. She came in at the beginning of the show and spent just forty-five seconds or so on stage! That was all we saw of her. She introduced herself and asked the audience to prepare for a night they wouldn’t forget and left. Shikena! She was even glum, as if it was a task to just be there at all! Now, I’m not a fan of the lady and I don’t even watch her show but I could not understand why some ladies in the audience were screaming when she came on stage! Na wetin? Naija girls sabi overdo at times sef! Kai! One lady behind me screamed out ‘ I love you, Kim’ as Kim walked off the stage. I turned to see who it was; an artificial looking lass with fake eyelashes. Na so dem dey take start!

If you ask me, there was no need for Kim Kardashian at all in this concert. None whatsoever! Was she paid huge sums and flown here to just introduce Darey? It didn’t make sense to many. My two cents on that would be that Darey’s management knew they had a great show planned but needed the ‘ooomph’ factor to pull in more crowds. And Kim Kardashian was that factor, perhaps. Anyway, the show would go down in the history of concerts in Nigeria as the best. I mean it!

What I have described has not even done justice to the concert Darey organised. It’s far from it. The pleasant faces of those who attended are enough to agree with me. Everyone kept talking about the concert as we walked back to our cars and tweets and blackberry broadcasts soon started about the concert even before we left the venue! Folks, Darey has raised the bar. This kind of concert is one you can only get at the O2 in London, I can bet you on that! I’m told the show took over 15 months of planning and execution. It was worth every penny and energy spent on it. Darey has shown that he’s a king in his own kingdom with territorial ambitions to conquer pretenders to his throne. I am quite proud once again of my ‘Jazzville colleague’. He did the stuff national honours are made of with this concert.

I don’t agree with you and the writer.
There is a reason why people like the Kadarshians are invited to shows and events. There presence makes people talk about the show and subsequently increase the number of people who turn out. I am certain that a lot of people doubted Darey’s show until they heard he was actually pulling Kim Kardashian frm the US. Many still wouldn’t go until they heard she don land for Naija. So, many of those who came did not just come to hear Darey sing (now, he is a good singer) they also came to see what Darey had to impress the likes of Kim Kardashian and he did impress everyone. So in essence, her being there albeit for ”45 secs” made Darey’s pockets a bit heavier and made the show a subject of discussion. No be wetin every musician want?

      • Kamal February 19, 2013 at 10:10 am

Thank you very much Aragon! It is called PR Boost! Mr Movie Director is in the entertainment industry and should know better! I am indifferent about Miss Kardashian but Darey achieved his goal by pulling more crowd with her. People were talking about the show because of her, and this in turn created more awareness for Darey and his show. Maybe I understand very well because am in PR.

      • Me February 19, 2013 at 1:00 pm

Don’t mind them! Even Mr. Movie director who wrote this article is indirectly seeking publicity himself using Darey’s name by giving us a long epistle of how he goes back in time with Darey when he was a nobody….very typical!
Abegi! All these hypocrites should free us joor! They are busy critiquing while Darey hops all the way to Zenith bank to cash his cheques! And Kim smiles happily to the Bank of America for her 500,000 dolls!

      • Toyin February 19, 2013 at 7:37 pm

True, it’s all about PR boost. However, the other aspect that many Nigerians are not mentioning or talking about is their obsession with KK. If an event taking place in Naija, and you need KK to boost it, that’s PROBLEMATIC. It’s rather pathetic and sad. Darey is a singer, and he invited a media attention whore to boost his show up. I lost all respect for him. Look at all these Nigerians getting excited that KK don land for naija. It’s a shame.

      • Hmmm March 9, 2013 at 11:59 pm

But Novia stated it that it was for the ‘Ooomf Factor’ as he put it. So he already stated that.

    • Say What? February 19, 2013 at 11:40 pm

Charles Novia go and sit ya behind somewhere. I can wait to see that your movie. You are always talking mess

  • Doyin February 19, 2013 at 2:08 am

    I’m impressed !

    • www.dprodigaldaughter.com February 19, 2013 at 3:38 pm

This article even goes beyond being impressed. Charles Novia is so articulate it’s amazing. The way he puts his words together and creates a vision in one’s mind amazes me… Wow! Darey should be proud of himself!

  • Tyler February 19, 2013 at 2:21 am

Bella! enough with all these write ups and long stories about Kim’s visit. Like other blogs have done, show us detailed pictures of the event pls. It’s yours some of us are waiting for ‘cos we know how you do it. Enough grammar please!

  • Dee Dee February 19, 2013 at 2:22 am

Amebo pipo dem dey sleep, wen day break you go hie d rubbish wen dem go begin tok. Anyways I like when the truth is so lovingly told.

  • Msunderstood February 19, 2013 at 2:34 am

He knew d show was going to be great but added Kim k cos of doubting thomases especially since people ve had not so good experiences of concerts in Lagos of recent but he didn’t need her. The good part is d next time he plans another one, he wldnt need to prove anything anymore.

  • Me February 19, 2013 at 2:37 am

Very typical of Nigerians to want to start famzing when someone has done or achieved something great. Everyone will then remember how the are connected with the person from the past when he or she was a nobody! He had to write an epistle with detailed introductory paragraph dedicated to famzing
Indeed failure is a bastard, with has no friends and relatives….Darey beware! for many shall arise at this time claiming connections with you! but by their fruits you shall know them

    • BC February 19, 2013 at 3:50 am

LMAO, “famzing” = “familiarising” = familiar spirit. Another one added to my slang vocabulary.

    • Tutsycool February 19, 2013 at 4:51 am

      Sub to badt.

    • Let it Be…. February 19, 2013 at 5:00 am

ahn ahn!!! chai!! whoever coined the irritating term “famzing” needs a whooping to say the least. All these “enemies surround us” mentality sha!! Hian…what hurt has Charles Novia done Darey with this piece?? IMO He has given a very eloquent summary of his experience at the concert and was full of praises for darey. I have read other peeps pieces, but I quite enjoyed this one, I could almost visualize the show…abeg shift jere, so because you don’t want to be accused of “famzing” now you can’t say job well done to someone who deserves it…#AnnoyingMuch….

    • lala February 19, 2013 at 5:08 am

I skipped through that. Wasn’t necessary at all.

      • Lola February 19, 2013 at 1:06 pm

You really skipped through that? …..Yet you took out the time to drop a response to it. Who are you really deceiving? Yourself course

You guys need to pay attention to what these Western Artist and Personalities say about your Country. They really could careless about us, all they want is our doe and they are out less than 24hrs from arrival…..

See what Nas and Pharrell had to say about coming to Africa and especially Nigeria & unfortunately this is how a lot of Western acts think——>

  • dahyour February 19, 2013 at 4:20 am

Business aspect of the show is to bring people to watch and to make KIM the spice of the subject. Darey…. kudos because 40% of ladies were there because they want to see KIM and wht she has to offer . Darey ur show was Awesome and the business sense of KIM was a money bag approach

  • FBI February 19, 2013 at 4:36 am

It was a great show Kudos to darey and the crew who made the show a great success and kim dear the baby you are carring could have nigerian blood, take your hands out of your pocket and hug people we are no different from kanye.

  • M(rs) Understand February 19, 2013 at 5:02 am

Criticizing Kim almost ruined your good write up.
Your beef is now reeking throughout the article, to the point of being headline in BN
But it would have been more poignant if you NEVER mentioned her at all…
For it would have shown how insignificant her rating is in your mind…
Devoting 2 full paragraphs out of 11 to the condemnation of her appearance really adds nothing more to your article…
I think it takes a little of the shine….
As for the reason behind such apparent venom, I will say “to every man, his own”…

    • chaos February 19, 2013 at 9:36 am

@M(rs) Understand…. Well said!!! That is all.

  • Temtem February 19, 2013 at 5:05 am

Giving “sara” money to greedy Kim K…like she’s some kind of celebrity? Naija and their unnecessary familiarizing sha! So disappointed in Dare…#can’tstandthekardashiansespKIM!

  • Teefah (www.that1960chick.com) February 19, 2013 at 5:26 am

I agree with Charles Novia, Kim wasn’t needed. But honestly she is the only reason I went, I got some free passes and my friends and I went because we wanted to see her do her thing on the red carpet (and frankly she didn’t even try, I was unimpressed by her outfit & she didn’t seem so into it…maybe it was pregnancy blues who knows?)
Anyways I wasn’t going to stay for the show cos I’d been to a few of these Eko Hotel concerts and apart from the Chris Brown show, it’s the same thing recycled. After Kim’s 45 sec intro on stage I decided to stay 10 mins before leaving, well 10 mins turned into 2hours, I was spellbound by the performances, the acrobats, teh dance solos, the stage productin, everything was on point!.
I can honestly say this is the best concert I have been to in Nigeria, it ranks right up there with Beyonce’s I am Sasha Fierce o2 show. (In My opinion…)
Darey has definitely raised the bar, and he din’t even have that many guest appearances, it was Darey from start to finish and no one was bored, no one left their seats for the entire 2hours, not even for a toilet break. It was that super AWESOME

    • dobby February 19, 2013 at 10:07 am

This is soooo true! lolz………..Did you see the way she stood in the pics with nigerian Artists? Like she was surrounded by Aliens!!!…..Anywayz, heard the show was tight sha. Nice work Darey.

    • Me February 19, 2013 at 12:39 pm

You didn’t need to write in bold letters for your comment to be noticed and read! Stop being silly!!
Anyway to respond to your comment, Kim was needed there to make a lot of people buy ticket and attend, fine she let them down by not staying long. But take it or leave it, it didn’t make Darey run into any form of financial loss instead it brought more people who bought tickets and that was the whole idea of having brought Kim……it was for people like you to but tickets!

      You gerrit?

  • Bukki February 19, 2013 at 6:03 am

This noisemaker should shut up already. Who was he again? Farmzer…

  • raffy February 19, 2013 at 6:05 am

@ Me,very unnecessary what you just wrote down.. He did that primarily 2 show “the blast from d past relationship” just 4d sake of cynical people who will say he was beefing him.
Charles Novia,Kin was absolutely not necessary here&i 2nd it! You a brilliant movie director&producer!
    @ Darey,more power to your elbow….. Bless!

  • beacky February 19, 2013 at 6:05 am

You can write abt how u r proud of darey and stuff but don’t be rude abt who pple like or don’t. Kim k was invited to apper in Show and She did her part. It wasn’t her fault the show started 3 and half hours Late. Darey achieved wat he wanted which was to use her name to pull more pple in. So u can’t blame her for looking pissed cos she works on schedule so leave kim k alone. If it was u how would u feel. U did naija time for oyinbo and u r crying that she looked pissed y won’t she. Even if she tried to cover the anger she won’t be able to cos she’s pregnant. So abeg free her

    • dareyfan February 19, 2013 at 8:59 pm

thank Beacky. People have flights to catch and other appointments. If you start late, they have to leave. I’m sure Darey understands that. kia

  • folzy February 19, 2013 at 6:56 am

There are many ways by which one can pass a message across without being insultive. I lost a bit of respect for Charles Novia when he called someone (Kim’s fan) “an artificial looking lass” just because he is not a fan of Kim K. You can write your epistles but show some respect for people around you.

  • bidibang February 19, 2013 at 7:45 am

i cant believe you ppl actually sit and read all this rubbish…i check this page out for pics….no picture, i am not looking….as for bellanaija am mad that you take time to write this but will not approve my comments on here….isnt it a freedom of speech world now? like seriously if you do not want opinions dont make it public or have a comment box.

    • Bea February 19, 2013 at 8:46 am

Lol how do you feel now after saying all that and then Bellanaija has now published your comment? Lol

  • Austin Uche February 19, 2013 at 8:25 am

this man(Novia) talked abt d awesomeness of this show, and d only tin ppl r taking frm his write up is d Kim k ish… And yet y’all r saying twasnt a gud business decision on d part of soul muzic to bring her down here? I laff in french.. Cos U guys jes cnt stop talking bou d said kim k…lolz
the best comment here so far has been dat of @teefah… The main gist here is d awesomeness of d show and how spellbound it kept the people dah was present there(i didnt go.. Buh alot of ppl have testified to d quality of d show)… If kim rilly isnt important like we say, we wnt waist abt a minute of typing for her sake…. Unto more important tins jare; Darey, well done. U have always deviated frm d norm and finally u have done sumfin never been done before in dis part of d world… More power to ur elbow broda

  • anonymous February 19, 2013 at 8:25 am

i agree with you. i really don’t see any reason why people should shout when they see Kim Kardashian. what does she do for a living? if you want to be like her when you grow up what should you do? these are basic questions you should ask yourself before you fall head over heels when next you set your eyes on her. please nobody should give me that she is making money crap cos we ain’t poor either. Peace y’all

  • Partyrider February 19, 2013 at 8:49 am

Y’all should keep your disgust and hatred of Kim to yourself. Her name pulled a lot of people there, which means mission accomplished for Darey and his team.
Lets not water down a good show by going back and forth about Kim’s presence. She was paid to make an APPEARANCE not to perform or gist with the audience.

Darey I hope we will have a video of the concert soon. Keep raising the bar.
Very well done to the whole team.

  • You dont Know Me! February 19, 2013 at 9:01 am

Mr Charles, You’ve answered yourself…. Kim was brought in as a biznez strategy… in D’Prince’s language, “the selling point!”

  • Shaniqua February 19, 2013 at 9:04 am

‘Amazing’ is an understatement. It was brilliant. To think she was paid $80,000 for just that small piece is annoying though. I guess she was the pull LLAM needed after the boring shows many people had attended at Eko Hotels. Did it eventually pay off? From the end, NO. But now, we know better.

  • Jumzy February 19, 2013 at 9:19 am

and the reason for you reposting the article is?…u sha had to comment…..hisss

  • Caligula February 19, 2013 at 9:21 am

Dare’s management team should’ve invited another celebrity who appreciates Art and culture better than Kim does. That was Dare’s silly groupie mistake, not Kim’s. Never met her personally but based on what I’ve heard, Kim is cool as hell, so are her sisters; (got a couple of friends in common and I trust their judgement). She’s a busy woman, a celebrity and her name pulls a lot of money and crowd. She obviously didn’t enjoy being there because it wasn’t her kinda thing, she’s from L.A! In her world, it’s all fashion and about building her brand. Y’all don’t fault her because people like y’all made her into the millionaire she is today. Also, dont forget she’s pregnant and i bet you, she must’ve been hella tired too. Dare should’ve gotten someone else to show; someone who actually wanted to be there. And yeah, way too much negativity and hateful words on here…eek!

    • Ewe February 19, 2013 at 10:10 pm

Coming from someone whose uses Caligula as their screen name.

  • Priscy February 19, 2013 at 9:28 am

I understand Charles’ point, but he needs to understand that Darey needed to pull people to the show and bringing KimK to Nigeria was actually what drew a lot of people to the show + Kim didn’t stay for up to 45 secs but the show was still spectacular irrespective of her absence. Thumbs up Dare….I hope other artist will learn from this

  • harhbeesolar February 19, 2013 at 9:32 am

i am not mad at Kim for coming to 9ja n using 45secs on stage, who wouldnt when that kind of money was offered….but #77.2m naira can feed thousands of Nigerians for years…like seriously when are we gonna get it right? masses are suffering and all we do is to enrich the pockets of a very rich lady…SMH.

  • bumi February 19, 2013 at 9:37 am

D banj shey u dey hear, the show took a planning time of 15 months. Kudos to u DAre. U are a true son of ur Father.

  • miss kristaal February 19, 2013 at 10:06 am

I don’t even know what people are complaining about.. Am sure She did what she was paid to do if not they would have taken legal action..
As for those asking about wat she was doing there , She was supposed to make people come for the show.. which she did..It’s called a business strategy and it worked.
It is not Kim’s fault that Naira has no value (talking about the fact that $500,000 amounted to 75mil naira

  • NIRA February 19, 2013 at 10:37 am

Charles Novia should go and rest. Kim was scheduled to make an appearance, not to perform. Beides, the show started late, westerners work with time, unlike Nigerians here. Kim had a flight waiting,so she had to leave. If you think she was grouchy, blame it on pregnancy. Hahahaha

  • BlackMagic Babe February 19, 2013 at 10:49 am

® I was so angered, but what can I do? Heard she was paid N80 million? Habba naija!! For what really, and to think she appear for a few second made it the more annoying?? Should would have even do some some strutting on the Runway, with three different outfits, but if he “Darey” recover and made his money, well not bad…Not even sure it will stare in her “Reality Show”..

  • Teniola February 19, 2013 at 11:03 am

500K for 45 seconds of work, yet some people wonder why the rest of the world is disgusted at this family. How can you justify that expense. Which yeye business decision is that? Are you telling me that the organisers made a profit from her coming? With all that went down with organising the show, did they sell tickets up to 72M abi which kind yeye talk are some of you saying. What kind of slave worship, will make you lose common sense. A lot of people that were pulled to the concert just to see her, will never smell near 72m in their entire lives. Yet you could go to see someone who was paid that much for an appearance. That’s just mugu on the highest level. If a fellow nigerian mugu’ed us like this, we will be up in arms, insert dbanj’s lekki trek of life, but when it is a foreigner, it is okay. Y’all are suddenly crawling out finding reasons to justify it. O pari, I don’t know what to say again. 500k dollars, ha, ha, and y’all think it is okay. If you have never done a good day’s work in your life before or you are related to thieving politicians and business men in this country, you may not see anything wrong with it. At least money means nothing to you. I wonder who next darey will bring to guest appear, and pay 1million dollars to, shey he has raised the bar now, as they say. We that think of ourselves as second class citizens in our own country, will now set a trend for concerts in nigeria. Y’all should watch and see for the influx of “stars” that will be brought to our shows, at least no one go want carry last. We’ll be inviting people to come use us, act like we are not worth the dirt on their shoe, collect our money andwaka. I wonder if she paid tax on that 500k. In the uk, money earned in the uk, even if you are a visiting business person, you must pay tax on that money. Even athletes that come for meets in the uk pay tax on earnings made. For that event. If usain bolt runs for 9 seconds, the money he makes is taxed and even income made around the world is subject to tax too. If y’all want to confirm, google it. I really wanted to attend this concert, as I am a huge fan of darey, the minute I heard that woman was coming, I said lai lai, my hard earned money will not be spent glorifying that woman and what she represents. Y’all voltrons can descend on my comment if you want to. Its open season

    • Idak February 19, 2013 at 5:05 pm

Not like the family use a gun to collect the money from a gullible public. Left to me,that family should be an adjunct faculty in sustainable business strategy in a couple of ivy league business schools. I’ve never hated the family nor their hustle. I just worry at the gullibility and sheer stupidity of the world that patronizes them. That family is one damn smart one and i wish them the very best as they milk the gullible public dry.

On a different note, well done to Darey for refusing to accept and peddle mediocrity. You and your woman, take a bow.

    • chichi February 19, 2013 at 8:56 pm

Amen at Teniola..we nigerians dont think..To think that ppl are supporting this stupidity is beyond me.. All i want to know now is this..Did Darey make N80million that night?? i sure hope he did…

  • Retrochic February 19, 2013 at 11:42 am

to be honest, i wouldnt have been interested in going for the show, if nt for Kim, kim was clearly a selling point, and that was clearly a business strategy, that was successful, although, her appearance for 45secs, was just clearly a slap in the face, it really shows like we are desperate, it would have been better if the Mangement team had discussed better with Kim, i would have preferred it, if they could increase the pay, than let her just make an apearance for 45secs, that’s to show hw little she regards us.

  • ClaireN February 19, 2013 at 11:50 am

“If you ask me, there was no need for Kim Kardashian at all in this concert. None whatsoever!” The thing is, Mr Novia, nobody asked you.

    • Osogagba February 20, 2013 at 11:35 am

Thank you, ClaireN. Mr Novia always writes condescendingly on everything. He’s so stuck-up.

  • POSHILLA!! February 19, 2013 at 12:05 pm

  • Nomy February 19, 2013 at 2:39 pm

Novia please i agree with you joor! All bellanaija commentators are good for is slamming Toke Makinwa, they can’t even see an insult when it slaps them in the face. So Darey organised a wonderful concert, Kim Kardashian did not need to come to Nigeria to promote it for Nigerians. Its this feeling of low esteem which requires and obodo oyibo prostitute to lift that has divorced us from 500k dollars. We have plenty of local talent, Darey himself is proof of that, but No, we had to go abroad and get Kim K who does nothing tangible by the way except have a sex tape and get pregnant for another guy while still married. She did not need to be there, Darey would have pulled it off beautifully anyway!

  • fhuntor February 19, 2013 at 3:08 pm

Nigerians y do you folks always hate? am not a fan of kim or darey. There is nothing wrong in wat darey did. Its all marketing. If this so called charles novia had the opportunity to put gabriella union or jamie fox in his movie, wouldnt he do it ??????

  • duh February 19, 2013 at 3:31 pm

Don’t blame kim, she is pregnant and had to sleep early. Darey is the bomb and charles novia is an important –

  • www.dprodigaldaughter.com February 19, 2013 at 3:35 pm

I love Charles Novia! He is simply the best!!! What an amazing article….

  • Omeche Onoja February 19, 2013 at 3:54 pm

The most important thing is that Darey’s aim was achieved….

  • Sphinx February 19, 2013 at 4:02 pm

Y u dnt you get the point here? All Charles is simply saying is the concert was a success, thus, Kim Kardashian’s presence shouldn’t have been necessary………U r busy saying Charles has beef for Kim………Read between the lines and get the real message

  • Hui February 19, 2013 at 4:16 pm

Uhmmm gabrielle union and jamie fox are actually known for their talents, kimk???pulease u can compare ur goddess to the likes of paris hilton, katie price, pamela anderson and the rest, but neva mention her name in one breath as actual entertainers…kimora sef would hav been a suitable choice

  • what February 19, 2013 at 4:42 pm

I like Kims BUSINESS side and sometimes fashion but not neccesarily her morals……i wont judge at al…but the thing that irks me is how her fans/ people are justifying her behaviour yet would insult toke, tonto, cossy and so on…..Kim is to the western worl , what our crazy ones are to us….yet we glorify and hate our own? as for those giving the excuse shes pregnant hence fashion fail oh please….is it not the same kim i have been reading in the dailymail? that still goes around to functions even to airport but still looks nice…its ok if your like her….but if you justification is that ‘shes maing money’ then your quite shallow….I kinda like her but was totally disappointed and thought she coul do better from her body language…and not because she dates black rich men means that she might like or loves to get down with blacks as a whole…..so please…anyways charles loves to have an opinion sha….lol

  • wiklo February 19, 2013 at 4:43 pm

not to worry even US reality star Honey Boo Boo would soon be lined up to come receive her own windfall, lol…for all the money bags that attended, $600 for a sneak peak or photograph with Kim, c’mon now, all you have to do is go to west hollywood to see the foot traffic of stars going about their daily routines or better still visit the US when the grammy, oscar, soul train or BET awards take place and you’d get endless A listers to gawk at…money miss road..”You can swim all day in the Sea of Knowledge and still come out completely dry. Most people do. ~Norman Juster”.. @ Teniola, i am sure she got it tax free, probably paid upfront into a Cayman account..Kim dearie you sure were smarter than the people who hired you…

  • yewnde February 19, 2013 at 5:48 pm

guy don’t be angry its called publicity……….one thing Nigerians have refused to acknowledge or appreciate.

  • fashionandstylepolice February 19, 2013 at 5:53 pm

Lol..Holy Moly. On to the next post.

  • StrategicBranding February 19, 2013 at 6:35 pm

All of you shouting publicity are missing the point. The concert has come and gone, but there are more discussions on Kim, her fugly dress and 500mill than on Darey’s talent and his great show.

So using Kim to promote this show, was a BAD PR move. I’m sure for what they paid for, they probably made a small profit, dear Darey’s next year people will be waiting to see who you bring in. You are a talented man, let your talent do the work.

    Kanye’s Baby-mama just overshadowed you.

  • hala February 19, 2013 at 7:58 pm

Am sure charles novia will lose sleep cos u have lost a bit of respect for him.

  • kay February 19, 2013 at 8:00 pm

People are funny sha!! Using their mouth to run a business they know nothing about!! Its obvious Darey and his crew did their homework well, probably studied alot of what makes concerts great and successful and that is why his show was sucessful!! The world of succesful, classy shows, music and fashion are a tard more complex than we see from the outside!! All we see at the end of the day is the ‘show was great or it wasn’t’ but alot is involved as to the reason for the end result. People in the international scene pay celebrities to come for shows like fashion shows; as rightly said it’s plain old PR. And that is what Darey did.
Before she came arrangements and agreements on how long she would stay must have being settled and if the show started late that is not her problem, in fact it would be really annoying!! But as usual we expect everybody to celebrate our “Nigerian factor” of tardiness which is repulsive in more developed societies!! The goal for bringing Kim was acheived and she played her part,Darey did his part well and the show/concert was a success. Darey might have planned it well but how do you really know that it would have being a success if Kim wasn’t invited? Am not saying this as to Darey’s well organized sucession of perfomances but as to the crowd the Controversial Kim might have pulled to the show? The show might not have drawn enough people to make Darey smile to the bank considering how much must have gone to planning the show!!Enough said, everybody played their part and the show went well for those who attended and hopefully for Darey’s pocket as well!!

  • House of ZINNO February 19, 2013 at 8:08 pm

Charles Novia seems to be a sad, lonely man, why criticize every post?? Like who gave you the yard stick to measure people’s failure and success. It’s quiet unfortunate that when people loose sight of the lime light they engage in everything possible to bring back their carrer but their other ways. Please stick to your movie production and die with your opinion.

  • jcsgrl February 19, 2013 at 9:54 pm

I’m still disgusted that $500k was paid to Kim that is if the gist is true! I mean really could darey have made up that amount in ticket sales or sponsorship? Hmnn! I don’t mind bringing a celeb from US or wherever for publicity but Kim K??? What about Chris Rock, Chris Tucker, I mean other stars that could have pulled crowd. Infact I’m just weak from disappointment…all I’m thinking of is how that money could have been put to good use.

  • Nicki minaj February 19, 2013 at 10:19 pm

Lol,it’s not ur businessssssssssss*Abeg no vex,you don eat???

  • oj February 19, 2013 at 10:42 pm

@sphinx, i agree with you. i think a lot of people commenting here didnt even read the article properly. All charles said was no lie, i see no beef. Kim K was only used to pull in more crowd. besides, she properly didnt want to miss her flight (heard the show started late) and she’s pregnant too. whatever the case, the party is over and Kim K , Darey and some people are smiling at their bank accounts. way of the world.

  • whumey February 19, 2013 at 11:45 pm

@Teniola, ur comment is most sensible…i really wonder if darey made up to 77 million naira from that concert…and if he did then there is plenty money in Nigeria…if that much can be given to a porn star.

    • Osogagba February 20, 2013 at 11:49 am

Whumey, it’s really a crass display of ignorance to call Miss K a porn star. What is your basis for that defamation? The private sex video of her and her former boyfriend which was maliciously posted online after she dumped the guy really should be no reason for anyone to call her a porn star. She did with her then boyfriend what most young people in a relationship do anyway except that in her case a little-minded, petulant boy-man who couldn’t get used to be dumped tried a childish act of retaliation by posting what happened between them while they dated online for everyone to see. He is the one who ended getting diminished in the eyes of right-thinking people, not her. So whumey when next you go about carelessly calling her a porn-star, maybe you should count up to 10 and look up in a dictionary what a porn star really does.

  • Deedee February 20, 2013 at 12:05 am

Na wa o, people please this Kim K gist don tire us abeg, Darey achieved his purpose, so y’all should drop this issue and move on…..

  • just me February 20, 2013 at 9:29 am

Call me crazy but I came for the article and stayed for the comments

  • ese February 20, 2013 at 10:01 am

lol……………………..una dey here plus chales novia dey critise, darey dis wat we call marketing strategy, all this one all of una dey condem d guy don make him mola pass d one he planed to make if kim didnt come, so its not ur effin busness weda d girl came for one sec or not, d guy made his mola dat is wat we call end product, so learn from him and next time if u r doin a show all u ppple dat critise pls bring obama let him come and host u, dem ull c d monii ull make for him comin to stay one sec on stage

  • Julius February 20, 2013 at 6:24 pm

Darey is a talented individual who don’t need an American to boost his publicity. We will always suffer from low self esteem issues. When Africans come here they don’t treat us with respect because they want us to feel it’s a privileged to be here but when they come to our continent it’s the other way round treating them like demigods . For all of you who worship kim k as an idol , you do have issues!

  • Chic February 20, 2013 at 9:01 pm

Guardian blogger Jeremy Weate described how Kim’s visit was an example of the country’s economic elite ‘blowing its money on bling puffery while most of the country suffers’.

He wrote: ‘Ms Kardashian appeared, said, “Hey Naija” and vamoosed. The rumour was that she’d been paid 500,000 Benjamins for the honour of mixing with the petro-class.’
Commentators in the country made reference to Kim’s infamous sex tape as they queried why a woman of dubious ‘moral rating’ should be in the country at all.
This Daynewspaper’s Eddy Odivwri wrote: ‘Many families are not exactly comfortable with her lifestyle, as she hardly cuts the image of a role model to a generation in need of a moral dress up.’

  • Chic February 20, 2013 at 9:09 pm

“…As the disgruntled tweets flowed out on my timeline, I thought of Special K, comfy in her jimjams, the plane rising gradually above the Atlantic, safe from all Lagos harm, smiling to herself that she’d actually 419′d the 419ers. And I went to bed with one final thought: oil turns all who touch it completely insane.
    Jeremy Weate.

  • HOPE February 22, 2013 at 6:50 pm

Hope darey made money?hope he is not in debt?i only pray he did.

  • gidiladyrantsalot February 25, 2013 at 5:49 pm

It’s not about being disgruntled. It’s about speaking the truth. More important than Kim K or Darey, there’s the issue of where the money comes from to pay all these celebrities… I wrote a post on this. Do feel free to re-post (crediting this blog of course), comment and share with others:

    Keep it up!
