On Sunday eve, the Actor’s Guild of Nigeria honoured Nollywood star Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos, for being enlisted in Time Magazine as one of the most influential people in the world.

For the event, Omosexy rocked a custom black-and-green dress by Kinabuti. She styled the outfit which features a ruffled neck detail and thigh high slit, with black pearl earrings, a black Rolex watch and Kurt Geiger black sandals.

She completed the look with a bun, smoky eyes and nude lipstick. But her most stylish accessory was her hubby Captain Matthew Ekeinde who looked dapper in a black dinner suit.

Rita Dominic, Segun Arinze, Ini Edo, Monalisa Chinda, Timi Dakolo, Chidi Mokeme, Kelechi Amadi-Obi and the AGN President Ibinabo Fiberesima were some of the celebrities present at the event.

I saw some more pictures on another site and I have to say Omotola is loved. They said this is the first time the Actor’s guild is throwing a party so classy and Big. Omotola keeps recording Alot of firsts . Congrats to omotola and IMO the whole actors for coming this far. I remember when we used to be shy to say we watch their movies. Now we are struggling to identify or claim them!lol, just yesterday, my mum was telling some people over the phone that our actress from Nigeria is one of the most influential people in the world. I laugh so tey. Wetin concern mami with our generation. Their own are embarrassing us .im proud of my generation. Emm ….some in my generation. Lol…

I have nothing against Omotola Jalade Ekeinde but this is total BULLSHIT, I am sorry and excuse mon francais! Instead of wasting money on glorified glad handing and self congratulatory parties, how about doing something constructive and tangible like:

    – Create an organized body that negotiates wages and working conditions in order to maintain minimum standards for its members.

    – Collect dues to create an ACTORS FUND to help those in the industry who have fallen on hard times.

    – Collect dues to create a RETIREMENT plan for actors so that after years of entertaining the world, they can still have income after they hang up their laurels. Members can earn credits toward retirement each time they work.

    – Collect dues to provide MEDICAL INSURANCE or some kind of medical voucher to help instead of posting people’s business on these blogs and asking for every Tom Dick and Harry to send money from all corners of the earth. If anything it will keep you all from wearing white tee shirts with a dead actor’s face on it that wouldn’t be dead if help was readily available at some damnable candle vigil! Members can earn credits toward health care each time they work

    – Collect dues to KEEP LAWYERS ON RETAINER defend and protect the actors’ rights on movie sets.

SAG-AFTRA in Hollywood has its fair share of parties for actors to walk about patting themselves on the back and speak on how great they all are and how the sun and the moon revolves around their stars BUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTT they take care of business which includes the five things listed above and beyond such as a variety of workshops taught by industry pros who will assess and enhance the skills of it’s members as a actors, casting workshops, cold reading and scene showcases with working casting directors, seminars to help actors better understand the business part of acting, discount film to members to view the latest releases at a great discount off theatre prices…how can they make some of these free perks available: MEMBERS PAY DUES!!!

Nollywood talk talk and show off go kill una! Imitating Hollywood is beyond just film making, try imitating the other things about the industry as well. Everybody walking about boasting of being this and that PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEE! Folks, don’t let the glittering pictures fool you, all that glitters ain’t gold.

Over to you BN PC police

      August 6, 2013 at 10:27 pm

From what we read this is the FIRST time they’re throwing a
party! And this s well worth it. Overs abi dey always worry una.
Did they tell you they don’t know these things listed by you? So an
Omotola should not be celebrated because the world is not yet
perfect? Plank on a lean stick Abeg! How dare you call it bull….
What have you done in your own right to right the MANY wrongs in
Naija? Some of you just enjoy raining on people’s parade for an
opportunity to appear intelligent. You could have stated your
points/advises without being insultive to AGN but no. Thank God you
didn’t say anything against Omosexy .E for heavy. Ndo oh. Next year

True talk. Naija can like to copy and copy blindly. Meanwhile can Omotola hire a chef, personal trainer and hit the gym cos she’s going to burst soon. Hollywood roles ain’t gonna come knocking if she goes around looking like a heifer. My 71 year old mother will give her a run for her money. Yes, 71 year old mother! (ps omotola’s devotees shouldn’t give me the bulshit of “she’s had four kids”). Let the ‘hater’ comments begin

@ notexactlyafan, just because she is bigger in size does not mean that she is not beautiful. Omotola is a beautiful lady, I do agree with you that she needs to loose a lot of weight and she needs to get in shape. She is still very beautiful even in the extra weight. She is very beautiful

    • Clarion

      August 7, 2013 at 9:27 am

@notexactlyafan your name already gives you off. I hope you’re not who I think you are! Your negativity is your downfall. Leave Omotola the way she is you snake! She is BEAUTIFUL in any way. At most she’s a size 12 and she carries herself well. Hollywood, Hollywood….BLA BLA BLA… Who are you to determine who and how they cast? This nonsense needs to stop! I’ve seen bigger leading ladies in Hollywood! Jennifer Hudson was twice Omotola’s size when she got a major role with Beuonce in dream girls! Omotola’s talent will be her first consideration! A casting agent will cast her and adjust he’s script if need be! That is the power of favor and talent. Pls hush if you know nothing about this business.

    • Iris

      August 7, 2013 at 9:35 am

I agree that SAG could do more towards providing welfare and other benefits for its members and perhaps they should have put this money towards that and sent her a congratulatory gift instead. But with regards to your noise about her weight and looking for Hollywood roles issorai please. If she ever tries to get a role in Hollywood and they tell her she’s too fat she’ll make whatever decision she wants to at that point. She doesn’t need YOU to help her out. And in an industry like Hollywood where the horrible practice of objectifying women’s bodies comes up all the time it’s a shame you want to bring that practice to Nollywood (and this is you talking about Naija copying blindly – PRIME EXAMPLE). One of the positive things Nollywood has had so far is that people have been able to watch actors’ weights yoyo without issues where people like Julia Roberts would have been crucified for the “criminal offence” of gaining 5kg. Despite her potential “bursting” skills before 71 abeg manage now, do something good this morning and celebrate for her before the bile in you gives you an ulcer *hiss*

    • Clarion

      August 7, 2013 at 9:37 am

” Beyonce” …. Plus havent you heard of actors who have had to loose about 6 dress sizes to do a role?” What’s that name of that actress again in ” les mirables” or something or bulk up muscles and fat to act a role? ” Bridget jones” Charlize teron in monster, Hugh jackman in wolverine….the list goes on….. It is obsolete to talk about an Actors body weight when considering roles. It’s so 1991. Actors now are meant to train to FIT their character when CASTED and serious minded productions give them the time to do that.

    • Matt Vaughn

      August 7, 2013 at 9:45 pm

Wow what a mature way of getting your point across. Your 71 yr old mother raised you right and must be super proud of you for finally using the words heifer and beached whale in referring to a human being. Emeka you obviously didn’t think you could hide under the name ‘notexactlyafan’ and people wouldn’t know you are the one. The way you write and your choice of words makes it quite easy for people to detect. when you get attention is dissing people that are clearly struggling with their weight. It’s quite sad and unfortunate that your work as a designer doesn’t doesn’t get as much attention; and the only time you get one is when you are dissing people that are clearly struggling with their weight.
Every human being is a work in progress and have things that they struggle with on a daily basis. I would rather take a human being who is struggling with weight and has beauty from within them that shines bright than someone who is fit but has sleazy and nasty attitude oozing over the place.

i do agree with you. AGN is like any other “political”
party in nigeria. everyone wants to lead but they never do anything
due to corruption, greed, etc. the film industry has not recorded
much success in organization in the past years, and everytime, they
keep getting funds and asking for millions, yet nothing.

      August 7, 2013 at 1:35 am

While I do completely agree with you that something similar to the 5 things you listed needs to be in place in the movie industry. However, I don’t see anything wrong in people coming together to celebrate the achievement of a colleague. It’s not like they spent the entire week celebrating. The movie industry in Nigeria might be centuries apart from where the Hollywood industry is presently but that shouldn’t deter them from celebrating little/big achievement (of a colleague) on the journey/route of becoming a better industry. Just like a single mother who is struggling and is not presently where she needs to be as a mother. As she goes on the ‘life time continuous journey’ on becoming a better mother; little/big achievement on the path should be celebrated. Nollywood industry is definitely not at the stage it needs to be (there is a lot of mediocre out there); but as it strives to get to that point achievements on the journey should be celebrated. Just FYI: SAG-AFTRA has been in place for 8 decades with a lot more knowledge and experience than Nollywood. I am not trying to say that should be an for mediocrity in the industry. — But that a journey of a thousand miles starts with just 1 step and the film industry is not going to all of a sudden kaboom itself to where SAG-AFTRA is presently. Very very valid points you made but, I personally think using that as excuse to not celebrate achievements is cuckoo.

    • Matt Vaughn

      August 7, 2013 at 1:46 am

      * (Correction) I am not trying to say that should be an ‘excuse’ for mediocrity in the industry.

      August 7, 2013 at 3:31 pm

Thank you for your points. I don’t want my statement to come across that I didn’t want them to celebrate each other but seriously brother, how many award galas have they been having all these years in Nollywood? And yet for all these years nobody has thought about or spoken about putting something together. How long are we going to keep saying Hollywood has been around for 5 decades and Nollywood for 2 etc? When is that step eventually going to be taken? Meanwhile the likes of Enebeli Elebuwa, Sam Loco and Ashley Nwosu have come and gone, the likes of Ramsey Nouah are fading and the likes of Joseph Benjamin are rising up to take their places. There will never be a great time to have this kind of conversation.

I work closely with the present administration of the guild here in Nigeria. For a fact there is a health insurance scheme up and running for actors now. They also have a benevolent fund up and running. Members are being revalidated daily. This is the first time AGN is run properly. They chose to celebrateOmotola because she has contributed immensely to Nollywood.. She is the first to be celebrated nd alot more Icons will be celebrated. It is a positive move. And we are all proud of the new AGN.

    @ Chinwe,

I had nothing bad to say about Omotola because my intentions where not maliciousor about her receiving any honor due to her based on her hard work as you have assumed. I am sorry you feel that straight talk is insult and you feel that I can’t speak my mind because I am not in Nigeria righting wrongs but I could certainly ask you the same, how are you helping right the wrong with your complacency? You know how I am righting the wrong? By pointing out what can be done by those already in power to do which is far better, far more helpful in the conversation than making excuses and having that “we dey manage” mentality. So I should have waited until they’ve had 7 parties before I said what I feel needed to be said? I can never be insulted by someone calling me an “oversabi” because I feel blessed that I have a discerning mind and can express myself intelligently. Chinwe, I can’t even take your critique to heart because it is based more on emotion than objectivity and one can never win a fight against the heart.

    • Ore

      August 7, 2013 at 8:03 pm

I wish I could ignore your epistle but I can’t. I do not remember or has it been written anywhere that the actors or actresses are employees of the guild or Nigerians. Why should it be the job of the AGN to provide insurance, health care and the rest? If as grown as these actors and actresses are, they cannot use their money for these things, how does it concern the guild or Nigerians? The guild CAN have a fund, not that it MUST or should. It’s a nice to have not a necessity. Why don’t you shout at hollywood to do the same for the fallen actors and actresses there? This sense of entitlement in Nigeria is soooo annoying.

    • Naveah

      August 12, 2013 at 3:24 pm

Hollywood Does Provide For It’s Actors That Have Fallen On Hard Times hence the reason why I mentioned the Actor’s Fund. Also, the reason the Guild should provide for those things is because that is why people join unions, for the protection! See, you probably don’t get it because Nigeria doesn’t have labor unions to protect workers but then again neither did America for a long while until people sacrificed to create them because they were tired of employers taking advantage of people. They are NOT employees of the Guild and neither are Hollywood actors but what the Screen Actor’s Guild does is take a portion of what they make and put it towards those things. This is part of why people pay DUES. Would you say that your job should NOT provide you with a pension after years of service because afterall you are a grown person and should have been putting your money aside for when you finally retire? I know that here, when you work, they take a portion of your pay towards pension, the same should be done via the Guild for the actors. I don’t mind people disagreeng with what I am saying but give me a realistic and valid reason why you think my points are not viable.

  42. Dami

    August 7, 2013 at 4:33 pm

Naveah i hope you have a blossoming career in writing and you’re well paid cos if that’s not the case…*sigh* lemme not go there. if only you knew how often Hollywood organizes events and galas for different flimsy reasons you won’t be here going on and on bou AGN honoring someone that’s been a part of the industry for so long…its entertainment for crying out loud! infact the only reason i think anyone will see this whole thing from your perspective is if they’ve been dreaming for a career break in the industry and its just not happening, is that your story? cos if it’s not then why are you like this?

    • Naveah

      August 7, 2013 at 7:06 pm

Dami, please don’t hold your tongue, you can go as far as you want to go with your thoughts and comments after all this is a public forum. I didn’t hold back what I had to say so please feel free to do the same. I am glad you like my writing and feel that I may have a career in it but alas I don’t but I do have a very good career that I love but it more has to do with drafting legal documents so I guess I am in writing, of sorts except it’s in legalese lol. Now ma’am, had you read my posts thorough you would see that I had said NOTHING about Omotola nor did I say she should be denied her due; I said that they should look towards building a better organization. I am sure they can have their events, galas and what not while also keeping in mind that there is business to be taken care of as well. As for your comments about seeking a break in the industry, it maybe hard for you to believe this simply because of the fame and fortune that come with the business, but not everyone has aspirations of being in entertainment. They are many people who are satisfied with being part of the world and contributing their own little part without the pomp and circumstance; I am one of those people. As for your last question, why am I like I am ? What ever the heck that means, I will deign to answer you, I am how I am and I am what I am because I have been fearfully and wonderfully made by the creator of the universe, Almight God the Great I AM. I love me and many love me but above all they respect me because I always keep it real with whomever I deal with because I can’t be anyone but ME. I’ll leave you with this, this lioness doesn’t lose sleep over the opinions of a sheep.

Wow this chic just married well and that’s pivotal to her success, especially considering the fact that she married at such young age of 18 yrs when only a selfless man won’t be controlling and domineering to point of killing her drams …she married a man who loves her and doesn’t mind her shining and being the center of attention. Look at captain ekeinde smiling and gazing into her eye with admiration. Her husband is her biggest fan and she is her husband ‘s biggest fan. What I see here is. A strong partnership ..something most relationship lack as the men are always busy claiming to be the “head” of the woman….I’m in tears just watching a man admire his woman so much cos it just reminded me so much of the deficiencies in my last relationship wherein I sent my boyfriend (now ex) a text message about being promoted at work and all he replied was congrats as though a phone call or celebratory dinner would kill him. Some men can’t be happy for their women, however, i doff my hat to captain. Lovely kids by the way…

Tracey and Iris probably woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning and have been sucking on some sour grapes. Gosh your comments reads so positive coming from people accusing another person of being negative. Drop the sour grapes and drink some naija fanta and learn to be objective! Size 12? I laff in jafaican. Actors body weight so 1991? You and I know you don’t believe that. Pray, please tell why Jennifer Hudson is now less than half the size she used to be if weight doesn’t matter. Deep down you know ‘skinny’ (and sex) sells. Either directly or indirectly. I’m certainly not advocating nollywood actresses copy hollywood blindly by being stick insects but there’s a difference between being a healthy weight and a beached whale.

If you know the right people in the right circle and lobby them hard enough and long enough, you can make it happen. Compared to the accomplishment of all the other listed, I was surprised at the nomination. No matter how it came to be, she got it and the rest is history.
