Charles Novia to Tiwa Savage: Is Nigeria America?

Charles Novia & Tiwa Savage - May 2014 - BellaNaija,com
Tiwa Savage‘s “Wanted” video presently has over 60,0000 views, so whether you are pro-Tiwa or not, everyone is watching.

Since the release of the music video, there has been a lot of backlash, as well as huge support from the industry.

Nollywood producer/director Charles Novia is speaking out on the video. via his official Twitter page.

The full tweet from Charles Novia
Whatever her hubby likes about her body should really remain within their bedroom IMO A video where a wife simulates ‘fingering’ is gross.

Rihanna and Beyonce and all other Yankee gals doing the nude video stuff at least have originality in their insanity. This one is…smh.

Yes, we live in a hypocritical society as some coots supporting that video would scream but our hypocrisy still keeps our kids in check

When you start exposing punanies & penises in d name of stupid ‘art’ , then those shouting ‘hypocrisy’ shd let their kids go naked to sch

For the record, I could be termed Tiwa’s biggest fan but concerning this video, Omo, e nor pure. Dem Mad-heeda and co are kids play 2 dis

Many will be quick to compare Jay Z and Beyonce in this case and say we watch those videos. Silly analogy. Is Nigeria America?

Rihanna exposes her breasts and booty and a mad fever grips almost every female act in Nigeria to also show their own t*t*. Haba!

One cannot even switch on to a Nigerian music channel these days without wondering if it’s an appendage of a foreign porn channel!

And after una go dey blame Jonathan! At least he covers his ass! Pun intended.

And just for the record, it’s the concept of the video that seems ‘tart’ to me and not ‘art’ before it is misconstrued. Ehen!

Thank you very much. Charles Novia is RIGHT. Tiwa ought to hide her face in shame. Desperation for fame. She needs to hide herself after her ‘Dubai spectacle’…..oh yes Tiwa and husband, even those of us in the US know about ‘that incident’. Trash is trash!!! You ain’t no Rihanna boo

Could not agree more! I totally disagree with the importing of trash of this kind from a mother to be and an African. I respect the fact that she is an artist and entitled to freedom of expression, but this latest is just not acceptable at all. No hard feeling and good luck to the artist!

i don’t know where people get this importing idea from. abeg when i was a kid in body(i’m still young at heart), all this ijo yoyo and sunny ade videos were on TV and mehn the bumping and grinding and shaking and touching. no lie they were way more than anything them american artistes be doing. e bi like if you tie wrapper and shake ya bum bum, we no go vex. but wear tight cloth and wahala don start

Charles Novia…you never make sense to me but today you totally did.

Tiwa Savage just a few points which I would call constructive criticism
    1) If you want to be really original and a pace setter in Nigeria, Start with your music. It s absolute trash in that your supposed album.
    2) Your makeup in this video, Fire that artist. What is it with your lipliner??It is meant to frame your lips not show that it is there or contrast you lips. Lip Liner defines lines!! Please!!! You do this all the time!! You lipstick didn’t suit you, you did the same in the Girlieo video in that hideo black dress and cheap jewelry. You have to stop trying to be big and acting small with your clothing and jewelry.
    3) Your supposed bodysuit was definitely made in Alaba Market. Please consult Emmy for better styling. Almost going naked and saying you are not naked is utterly foolish. If you want to be naked, be naked well!! Then that trashy thing did nothing for your figure. You looked like you just lost weight but you are far from toned and attractive. Please get a better trainer.
    4) Your shoes are performing shoes for the stage. Beyonce wears it for performances but not in her videos. Please copy with sense!
    5) Your expressions were the worst! Like what??? If these are the actual faces you make and your husband tells you it is sexy please he is blindly in love. You looked like you wanted to take a dump!
    6) Don’t fall for the any publicity is good publicity. This is extremely bad publicity and yes you would get many view but best believe you have become a joke! If you got it right there would be no issues but you didn’t! Infact any brand that make you an ambassador be sure I am boycotting it. That being said I am porting to glo today!

      May 29, 2014 at 3:36 pm

Number 3 is what I’ve been saying since. If a thing is worth doing, it’s worth doing well. If she wanted to create the illusion of nudity, she should have done it perfectly. Her body suit can best be described as a travesty.

In short, everything about the video is a major fail. Her makeup and hair…urgh!! Her facial and body gestures were dreadful. At some point, it looked like she was having a seizure. The shoes!! WTF? Another travesty. I have never seen so much tackiness in the space of 4 mins. The whole thing left me in a WTF moment filled with so much laughter. Again, if a thing is worth doing, it’s worth doing well. Don’t bring out half baked stuff and expect us to appreciate it as “art” especially when we have seen better. I can’t even believe somebody called this “art”. Chai! Uwa di egwu.

      May 29, 2014 at 4:23 pm

Charles, thank you for your intelligent and unbiased view on this Tiwa’s video.I adore Tiwa but this Wanted video just screamed unoriginal! copycat! and…“I am now married and people call me Mrs but I don’t feel that way, lemmie show them that married is the new single”…*sigh*

this is my view on the video… firstly the video doesnt seem orginal at all. it copied some part of rihanna- disturbia. the outfit was also tacky and didnt fit her properly, if she wanted to go sexy, she should have gone all in but that outfit was not doing, it was baggy around the camel area as well.
i do agree with charles in the sense that ‘hypocrisy keeps our kids in check’ love that. the idea or concept of the video was far from art, art is original, creative and interesting. this isnt. it like she gathered all of rihanna, shakira and beyonce video to together.
my point is she had wanted to sexy and crazy she should have gone ALL IN. And at least made it proper perfect, that even the international world would be shocked. but rather that video looks like a home video, or something i will do in my room lool

Charles Novia by the time you add each 10min fame you get from dissing your fellow artists, i’m sure it would be up to the length of one of your crappy movies. Whilst i do not regard Tiwa’s recent video as art, i’m sure charles can identify with the concept of “tart” too since that is the main ingredient of his movies….hardly art.

His movies and his big head will have to be discussed whenever he decides to butt his massive nose in other people’s business. I mean it’s not like anyone asked him to weigh in. So since he decided to offer his stupid opinion, he will get some unsolicited advice in return. And this particular advice is so spot on. Someone like him who only churns out Z grade Nollywood movies should not even be speaking when other professionals are talking; he hasn’t earned the right. He needs to up his game to earn the title critic. By the looks of it though, he might not be capable of doing that, he is far too busy sticking his nose in other people’s pies to focus on his.

    That was a quality video.
Yes, the concept was a bad idea considering the culture we live in, lacks originality and the costume didn’t flatter her as well. If her focus was for a commercially success, it also wouldn’t sell in Naija as I don’t see any corporate body contracting her to play that song.
Is Nigeria America? Hmmm…..My question then is, if that video was released by TIWA as an American based naija artist, would people have reacted the way they did? Or was the backlash as a result of the society where the video was released?
Tiwa is a talented artist no doubt. Whatever happens at the end of the day, it’s up to her and her team to learn from this experience, define their niche and bounce back stronger.

I dont think they would have reacted the way they did.
Anyway, i found the video and the song boring, so unlike Tiwa. and as my people would say, “Clothes and English came to Africa by Ship” <— Tiwa was fully dressed and if it wasn't for the ships that came years back y'all would be chilling in your bday suits right now so please, dont tell me its unAfrican to be half naked.

If your child copies this it’s becos you have failed in setting concrete standards for said children. You don’t need to be a child psychologist to realise that it is the Parenting that has a direct impact on the child. If you have done your job and you have built a secure attachment with your child. That child will be resilient in the face of socioeconomic deprivation as well as other environmental determinants. It’s a free market Tiwa should be able to exploited what ever market she is targeting. Charles novia u sound like the archetype male chauvinist . I bet you still think a woman alone determines the sex of children. What’s with the double standard? . I didn’t hear you when all those little african male musicians flaunt their stuff and gyrate with gals on their videos. Charity begins in your house Charlie. The video is for 18 and above , if your child accesses this or other porn on internet sites go look in the mirror because that’s the reason they do it. People like you never really know what their children are up too.

U are missing the point. Some don’t care for the raunchiness or attempted display of sexiness in he video. Its the execution that is lacking. The body suit didn’t flatter her shape, and the shoes were wrong. The faces she was making and “sexy” dances looked forced and unnatural. I was actually looking forward to this new sexy tiwa….but ended up laughing my ass off.

When I am here, some comments often makes my day or breaks my heart.
Today,@missindependent’s comment gave me hope.Your comment is insightful(deep;it’s cool to know that not everyone romances mediocrity)

….. It’s so depressing that in 2014, people are still judged by the colour of their skin. 80% of the comments made was about the object not the subject;how convenient. If only we all had a true grasp of our history, we will know that we do not have the moral justification to criticize Tiwa’s person . We all are copycats(tell me that it’s African to use bleaching creams, wear Brazilian hair, wear false nails and eyelashes, leave the cook to make breakfast for your husband.Even your Ankara that you thinks makes you look all African on a Friday isn’t from Africa) we copy one day at a time while Tiwa took it all the way!

    We all need to chill!

Back to the subject, I believe the concept is kinda tacky but that’s what’s going to sell. Give it to the Don, he knows the market.

  28. Zeeee

    May 29, 2014 at 2:30 pm

Hey Peps, I tried so much not to comment on this topic but I feel like I should say a little something. So, here, we go:

    1. Please guys, u gotta admit that Tiwa actually tried something that has never been done before by any female artist in this industry, whether she was successful at it or not, at least she tried something different and for me that’s a thumbs up. You have to give her credit for that.

    2. The picture quality of that video is amazing. Nice shots, especially the scenes in the tunnel-looking place, absolutely beautiful. The lighting was close to perfect and the scene where she danced in front of the car was also nice. Overall the video had a nice concept.

    3. The song was not fantastic but in my opinion, it was not bad either.

Tiwa if for any reason you see this, please remember I don’t belong to the class of people that want to put you down but see me as someone criticizing you constructively, that been said:

    1. The outfit was soooo wrong. The dress did not pass the message across because it was distracting, it didn’t look classy, quite frankly, it looked like trash! and as a result of this, it made u look like u were trying too hard to force d sexiness (which u av already). I also believe it didn’t make people concentrate on some nice moves u did in that video. Now, I looked beyond the dress n I cld see all the effort u put into making the video but not everyone is that patient and u need to consider that.

    2. The Shoes. Cmon Tiwa, I expected better. That shoe was uuuggglyy. You had no business wearing that shoe. PERIOD!!!!!!! I don’t need to lecture you on that, I just believe u made an honest mistake cos I knw u can do better.

    3. Not all the facial expressions were bad or sex stimulating as pple av said but I av to bring u attention to where u put out ur tongue in btw ur fingers, that’s trashy. When u were on the floor, humping, trashy. But most importantly, the make up made it look worse. it was a NO NO!

RECOMMENDATIONS (For anyone trying to copy her, or for u Tiwa)
So, I’m no expert, but I think u guys will agree with me on some tips:

    1. If u need to shoot a nude inspired video, pay attention to the outfit, u can expose so much without putting it in pple’s faces. JLo does that a lot without pple realizing that was the aim.

    2. Choreography. Plsss pple, we underestimate the power of choreography, i’m not talking about getting pple to dance in d background oh. I’m saying evry tempo of the music shld be highlighted with a good dance move, Bey did that in naughty gurl (part where she was in d mirror looking place). Another reason this helps is that it distracts everyone from the nudity cos pple r carried away with the nice moves, so its kinda like they want to hate it but they cant. See Ciara’s ride video n u’ll get wat i’m talking bout (I knw nt everyone can dance like her but u get the message sha)

    3. Play attention to the music because at the end of the day, that’s wat matters most. If u need to shoot a nude inspired video, make sure to a large extent its a track that pple cant help but like. Bey did that with drunk in love, the melodies n voice co-ordination in that music was unbelievable.

That been said, Please pple married or not she has a job to do, so take it easy on her, shes only trying to do her thing. My darlyn TIWA SAVAGE. Thank u for taking videos in 9ja up a notch n I admire ur courage. God bless u dear.

In reference to ur first point; No, its nothing different. Maheeda and Afrocandy have already explored that path in Nigeria. Tiwa is doing nothing new….which is why i was dissappointed and felt like she should’ve infused originality to her craft.

      May 29, 2014 at 6:30 pm

Per your Choreography comment- She actually got a choreographer who is an mgbeke feeling sexy tbh…The Ezinne girl in CEO dancers, I think that had to be a big mistake. CEO dancers are know for energetic moves not sexy moves. She hired the absolute wrong person and this is why it looks like she is taking a dump or her stomach hurts as she attempts to be sexy- Ezinne was probably saying do you face like that probably thinking the facial expressions from her own dance style will translate. Absoulte mistake! Ok done!

As much as I thoroughly disliked the video, I dislike this sanctimonious bull crap even more. Nigerians be doing the most with this their “we are so holy” spiel. JUST STOP IT ABEG! Never have I seen a nation of liars, thieves, killers, dictators, adulterers, molesters, voodoo-loving, fornicators (and anything you care to tag on) who absolutely love to wallow in their own lies and deceit. Government is rubbing us blind, the vast majority of people in the society have lost their sense of ethics and morals, human life is worth nothing, corruption is so fucking rife, the girl child is a pawn on a chess board! Yet people dare sit on their malnourished high horse pointing fingers at other nations. It’s sooo hilarious, it’s sad! Tiwa Savage is well within her rights to do whatever she pleases (as long as it is legal) without having to hear from the holiness brigade. If your children are too young to watch that kind of stuff, please regulate their viewing habits; that is why you are a parent, stop being LAZY! That kind of stuff is meant for adults (most of whom already do way worse things) anyway so I don’t see what the fuss is about. The bottomline is if you no like that kain thing no watch! No be by force!

As long as Nigerians continue to live as hypocrites, things will never get better. Because they will continue to sweep the pertinent issues under the rug while they focus on stupid mundane shit. And the vicious cycle of rubbish continues.

PS. This Charles Novia is just irritating. Always tryna stay relevant on top other people matter. Get a life MR. You totally need it.

That really is the truth. People talking about morals as if there was any left in the bank. A truely morally bankrupt nation coupled with a new nigerian concept of intelligence which lacks any real logic and carries no weight internationally and guided by a true misconception of religion. So it’s understandable why all the hue and cry about a video censored 18. No law has been broken accept the children of some misguided parents who are likely like true Nigerians to breech the censorship and watch a grown ass woman doing her thing. In which case based on the Strange nigerian mentality, it is Tiwas fault, notting to do with bad parenting, or perhaps the faliure of government to actually do anything constructive in protecting neglected children from accessing censored items. As for novia, seeking cheap publicity is your game. If you truely were a soldier of conscience you would do something constructive perhaps taking up the censorship board and insisting that there are tighter regulations in place to protect children. As for the adults, if you don’t watch porn and not that I am suggesting that this is , why go and buy it and shake your heads with disapproval while watching. What exactly are you teaching your lovely kids. Don’t read the label just consume first. And you wonder were your children pick up their bad , nasty habits. And Charles novia while in an alternative universe u actually do something constructive and put the censorship board in check you’ll also tackle piracy which is a very big issue in media. You like work don’t you. I some how picture you with a mop, mopping up river niger. In reality novia, you are are just a true nigerian after cheap publicity. You should open a church. Really you’ll be rolling it.

Ok, have read most of the comments and have gone back to watch the video and see what the drama is all about. First of all, the truth is that we are Africans for a reason, you are married and have inlaws and a husband for a reason. I am not particularly thrilled with the dress code and the sexual innuendos as I am African on the video. I feel that to be sexy, you always have to leave a little bit to the imagination, less is definitely less and more is always more when it comes to oozing sex appeal as a woman. We are on this platform because as Africans this is somehow not in our moral compass, yes the west does it all the time but how many of them can say their inlaws and families are embarrassed by such. As an African we are set apart by our morals, and that has always transcended to whom we are. Tiwa is an artist and granted she has the right to do as she pleases, she has a target market she is catering for and although we may agree or disagree, she has a fan base that is thoroughly in love with her image as well. So for the few of us that are still reserved or shocked at the video gyrantics, I say, watch and let live. Her husband is okay with the issue and am sure clearly her family too. My kids do not normally watch things on tele as they are below 18, so whether it be Beyoncé or Rihanna or JLO, I control their space and time for as long as they are under age. For the 18+ then I guess it is art. Personally I would have preferred less sexual antics but the song is great and she is clothed more than the other celebs do. I just don’t appreciate the gyranting all over the place. Its tacky especially for a married woman in AFRICA.

guess you’ve not watched the average african cultural dancer, with hips gyrating etal and what about the makossa dance? are those western inspired as well?

      May 29, 2014 at 4:13 pm

Yes it is foreign! Beyonce started Makossa. Rihanna started Mapouka. James Brown started egwu ukwu. It’s all western inspired.

Tiwa Savage Balogun !!!!!!!!!!!! You have disgraced me! I am a fan but you don fall my hand, why now? we keep complaining the world is bad and we are making it worse. I am even more embarrassed that she has supporters in naija. I live in yankee and this is not the first time im seeing this but i boast that back home things are better morally. You guys are taking that away from me! shame shame shame we want to add yankees problems to our own where govt has to pay millions for teenagers sleeping around because that is what they see on tv and having babies all over the place unacceptable!

    • Curious

      May 29, 2014 at 3:58 pm

Things are better in Nigeria but you are cooling your heels in Yankee. Why na? Come back and follow your people to enjoy all this berraness. What with all the people having babies and dumping them or selling them, missing girls, bombs, armed robbery, kidnapping, underage marriages, abuse and molestation, open and underground prostitution, married people sleeping with and having babies with “teenagers” and others alike effectively contributing to the underground prostitution sitch. Infact berra too much for Naija, don’t miss out oh! Begin come now!

What you said is COMPLETELY different from what she meant. You looked stupid (comment), while unsuccessfully trying to make her look stupid.

You think it is better to abort for umpteen times, like we do in Nigeria , spreading HIV like malaria, even the Mosquitos carry it now. You can’t compare America to this place. There is a system in place that was put there by the people for the people. Respect people rights. It’s what America and other God blessed countries have fought for and have achieved. Once a standard is set it applies to everything. So you want to embargo Tiwas right to express herself, why can’t boko haram express their right to keep girls out of school based on religion too. Ask yourself has she committed a crime?. It would be a crime if she had put out this video without a warning to its adult theme but she did. It is you and your likes that go looking for drama. So stop harassing your self!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Is this blog a nigerian thing? The TV u watch no be oyibo? Interet no be oyibo? Anybody that is hating on the video na pure bad belle. Tiwa killed it and will continue topping charts amongst her peers. Haters be killing themselves. Every song has a theme. She expressed herself pretty well.

    May 29, 2014 at 4:51 pm

Some don’t care for the raunchiness or attempted display of sexiness in the video. Its the execution that is lacking. The body suit didn’t flatter her shape at all, and the shoes were wrong. The faces she was making and “sexy” dances looked forced and unnatural. I was actually looking forward to this new sexy tiwa….but ended up laughing my ass off.

  36. ebuka

    May 29, 2014 at 4:54 pm

The local village dancers nko? Jigida and twerking, guess you all dont see that. What about Fela dancers? Haters just be shooting dust with their mouth.

    May 29, 2014 at 4:54 pm

I just hope Tiwa doesn’t try to respond to the criticism.

  38. Riri

    May 29, 2014 at 4:55 pm

Nigeria is NOT America, and shouldn’t try to be one. Each should stick to their culture and that’s what makes the world interesting. Indians stick to their bobbing head, way of singing, Spanish salsa, brazillians samba, so Naija should StOP copy cat trend and stick to their own. Even here in America Bey and Rihanna get criticized, even Yankee that ignorant naijas use as a pedestal, they have their limitations. So, it s not a matter of hypocrisy, it’s simply lack of identity and thinking copying Yankee means advancing. You see how olamide or phyno took rap by being creative with it speaking their language, that’s creativity. You see how Asa does neo soul with her own creativity. Tiwa, you are clearly lost and u need to find your own identity.

      May 29, 2014 at 6:11 pm

Biko, why are you writing in English? Please stick to your culture and write in your traditional Nigerian language.

    • riri

      May 30, 2014 at 12:26 am

Wth, u sound daft. Go ask your grandfather why they allowed british to colonize them and make English the official language in Nigeria. Speaking English is different from emulating a style, way of life known to a group of people. You can speak your learned language(English) but keep some things that identifies or differentiate you from other groups

    • Su

      May 30, 2014 at 12:06 am

Yes o. Which part of Nigeria answers riri. Ewu hypocrisy. Get back to your village and retire to a thatch hut, worshipping your trees and shiny shiny objects.

    • riri

      May 30, 2014 at 5:01 pm

Guess what? I will gladly retire in my village hut than looking stupid bcos you want to copy Americans by force. So, you call dressing half naked, touching your crotch, being sexually explicit civilization or exposed. Thats the mistake dumb nigerians keep making. I want to show, I’m not from the village, let me pose half naked, wear hideous wigs bcos I want to be like American. . You are an idiot!!!!

Wow Charles Novia is a pain in the ass, since he is jobless, his main job nowadays is to judge, criticize and interfere in other people’s affairs, he is extremely annoying, and he needs to get a job and a life!!! As for Tiwa Savage, she looked as if she was severely constipated, and that wasn’t sexy at all…. She was literally mastubating and f**kng the floor, it was quite gross and unnecessary, try being original next time. And sack your yeye manager Tee Billz, and get a new manager, that understands music!

    May 29, 2014 at 9:09 pm

Mr novia, what is your own in this mattar. The video is not for everyone. Why did you click on the link. It’s not by force u hear.
    2. So the sight of women owing their sexuality threatens you. Why mr Charlie ?. What us the real reason. Is it becos you are a Dickless wonder and you have vajaja envy.
    3. Mr Charlie women these days own their sexuality. There is notting you can do about it. Maybe you can summon the elders in your village and insist on circumsising all your doormat women.
    4. If you really wanted to be constructive, you could have addressed your concerns to the nigerian media houses and ensure that this video is only shown after 2200hrs. But of cause Charlie you are a bitching Dickless wonder. You can’t really effect any change. Am sure ann summer has replaced you at home.

its not acceptable says who…..doesnt she live in a free country,is she forcing you and your children to watch??is she begging to be a role model to your kids???all this nonsense thats why Africa is backward…….leave the girl be…you must not like everything she does because guess what, she is NOT here to please the likes of you…take several seats….

  45. Kinkster

    May 30, 2014 at 10:19 am

Nigeria doesn’t condone overt sexuality abi? But corruption, theft, jungle justice, pedophilia, rape and general bad behavior are acceptable obviously! 1 racy video is the least of our problems abeg.

Yes Charles Novia, Nigeria is not America,….unfortunately. They have healthcare, power, an active police force, an active military , resourceful legal system, accountability….etc…etc….

Charles, go and do film make we watch abeg. Not every time jumping on controversial topics to stay relevant, sometimes work too. SMH!

I actually don’t like the video, it was tacky and not executed properly, but that “Nigeria is not America line” just irritated the heck out of me.

Your hypocrisy keeps your children in check. There is notting one would not hear in this obodo Nigeria. Now I understand why these nigerian kids are so pretentious , Aunty, this uncle that, meanwhile if you log on to their media profiles you would not be able to place the child you think you know with the media profile on display. The amount of teenagers I see coming in for abortions like they are buying candy. Hypocrisy does not keep your children in check, it just keeps you blind to the reality on ground. Hypocrisy begets hypocrisy. I cannot understand how hypocrisy can be used in any constructive positive way. In fact in Dantes inferno there is a special place in hell for a hypocrite !.

  49. Solo

    May 31, 2014 at 7:59 pm

That’s the truth of the matter. Hypocrisy means do as I say but not as I do. And everyone and his mother knows that children copy what they see their parents do. But it is appropriate for a true Nigerian to preach the gospel of Hypocrisy,. In Nigeria it is an authentic religion. You are a hypocrite Charles novia and I admire you for admitting it.
