Feminine Allure! Presenting Maki Oh’s Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear Collection

Maki Oh Spring 2015 Collection - October - 2014 - BellaNaija0124

We are sure this collection definitely has the White House’ seal of approval! Presenting the latest collection from Nigerian designer Amaka Osakwe‘s fashion label – Maki Oh.

Yesterday BN reported that Amaka was heading to the White House as a guest for Michelle Obama’s Celebration of Design event. With this new collection it seems Michelle can look forward to bevy of fab pieces to keep rocking Maki Oh style!

The collection, which she has described as her “most serious“, shows Amaka’s focus on feminism using her signature aesthetics to tell the tale of the woman who is free spirited to make her decisions. The collection’s pieces are filled with layers of patterned sheer fabrics, coated glitter skirts, tapered short dresses, rich cottons and dense mesh.

The collection’s back story is filled familiar grounds for Maki Oh with a focus on the original meaning of the word ‘virgin’ – “a woman who had left her parents’ home, was betrothed, and could take any lover she pleased”.

The answer to your question doesn’t matter lol. You’re clearly not the target customer. As you would say, commot ya eye.

No you don’t wear them as modelled. They are usually styled in an exaggerated form when it’s presented. There are pieces that are very wearable with a little tweaking according to one’s own style.

Elegant, cohesive collection, love the bows and shoes (yes, shoot me) in particular. Can’t help but be reminded of the furry / Big Bird Céline shoes though.

Still successfully treading that line between conceptual and commercial. I’ll be honest; the adire / navy / panelling / tassel narrative that she has channelled over the past few seasons is getting slightly tiring though. That burst of pink was the high point for me simply because it seemed fresh from her. Interesting that both her and Lisa were thinking asymmetrical mixed media dresses this season. Most importantly, however, the quality of finishings appears to be much improved.

Can’t help but notice that the model looks like Maki, just taller and leaner lol.

Side note: Bella please number the looks whenever you feature collections. Makes it much easier for the reader to reference particular ones in comments without having to count.

It’s like you have jazz! I was thinking exactly the same things! It feels like she’s still using the same fabric from her earlier collections because of the navy and adire thing. In fact one of the blouses here looks very similar to the one Michelle Obama wore. The tassels have also been carried through about 4 (if not all) collections now, it’s time to give it a rest. As soon as I saw the asymmetrical layering, I thought of JBL even though I think Maki pulled it off better.

Not my favourite collection (spring 2013 was) but I still love me some Maki Oh and the bows and the burst of pink gave me some life! She needs to have a sale in Nigeria so we mere mortals can by her stuff!

wowzers!!!! This girl is most def talented. You can clearly see the cohesion and thought behind this collection. Regardless of the fact that the styling is over-exaggerated for obvious effect, she obviously has an eccentricity that is fabulous and always shines out…more power to her…
