Robbers Disguised as LASTMA Officials Arrested for Extorting N35,000 from Motorist

Two suspected robbers disguised as LASTMA officials in Lagos have been arrested for robbing a man of N35,000.

The suspects were identified as Funsho Williams and Adekogbe Olabode.

Here is the victim, Felix Adesanya‘s account, as reported by Global Village Extra:

“They said I had committed a traffic offence and forcefully entered the vehicle, introduced themselves as LASTMA officials. They later demanded my wallet, ransacked it and took N30,000 with a threat to take me to their office if I did not cooperate and summed up the money to N60,000.
In order to meet up with my appointment, I went on my knees begging for mercy, but they said I should take them to the nearest ATM or face the risk of forfeiting my vehicle and paying a N120,000 fine.“Left between the deep-blue sea and the devil, I followed them obediently. At the ATM, they demanded to know my account balance, but I did not allow them see it, I withdrew N5, 000 and gave it to them, making it N35, 000 in all”.

LASTMA boss, Babatunde Edu condemned the robbery, and stated that the suspects are not LASTMA staff.

Sir LASTMA boss – How does the public know that someone who is wearing that uniform is not a staff?

This has happened to me before and I still feel very ashamed and traumatised when I remember the events. I was driving along the express after the Oshodi bus/ stop in heavy traffic and this man jumps in front of my car and says he had told me to stop and I disobeyed his instructions and jumped head of traffic. Long and short, he jumped into my car (I had wound down the windows trying to explain my position thinking he was a reasonable traffic official) and followed me to an ATM where he extorted N 65,000 from me. I still feel VERY STUPID for allowing that to happen as he wasn’t wearing a uniform and he flashed some traffic enforcement ID card at me.

I had been worrying about some stuff I was going through while driving which is why I guess he was able to “rob” me because I really wasn’t focusing, I just wanted to getaway and not have to deal with all the LASTMA wahala, on hindsight I should have confronted him well. Pardon me if I never empathise with LASTMA and traffic officials when they get beaten up, lol.
