Dele Momodu Sends a Message to GEJ with Pictures: Mr. President, Murtala Muhammed International Airport is an Airport of Pain

Dele-Momodu-Goodluck-JonathanDele Momodu is not happy with the conditions of Lagos State’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport, and he wants the President to do something about it.

The Ovation publisher share pictures of the airport on his Instagram page with a message to the President under each photo.

      January 19, 2015 at 12:02 pm

This is just one of the numerous issues we have in this country. I pray Nigerians look beyond religion and vote for change. Even if you look at all the APC states, You’ll c d difference. If we talk about Islamization of Nigeria, why didn’t he do it when he was a General?? I heard his driver of 30years is a Christian, his cook for 25 years is one also. I know the change is in our hands. Let’s just go out and vote. The best person that God wants will win.

Yes it is! We the public should send direct messages so the government knows what every day Nigerians see and experience.
They’re surrounded by security, in nice cars and nice houses all day.. They don’t see what we see!
Action was taken when Channels did a spot on the state of the prisons in Lagos. Hopefully action will be taken again this time.
Nigerians please continue to Speak Out!

I watched a video recently where people like Onyeka Onwenu and Kate Henshaw were screaming at the top of their voices
‘Vote for Goodluck’. I could not believe it. 4 years is not enough to solve Nigerias problems but it is enough to start something. I cannot see a single thing. Not one. Yes they provide comic relief once in a while with Der is God statements and Captain Jack outfits but that’s all. Such a shame.

    • Saheed

      January 21, 2015 at 10:58 am

Onyeka was given an appointment to head a government parastatal after singing “run, Jonathan run” in the 2011 presidential campaign. She must have seen how juicy it is to be a top official in Jonathan’s government. What else would you want her to sing at the moment, One Love? That is a dead song that wouldn’t bring multi millions. The simple remedy is just to vote out this inept president and his cohorts.

Why are u surprised about Onyeka Onwenu, the woman has always and will always be (AGIP) Any Govt In Power. Have u forgotten how she was following Mariam Babangida like a puppy dog during the Better Life for Rural Women and MAMSA era, likewise Miriam Abacha she never stood for anything that will benefit Nigeria Women and Nigerians in general except her pocket, and I for one don’t see her as woman of substance or role model cus she never stood up for the down trodden but the elite, moreover I see her as concubine / pimp to her political friends, friends with mutual benefit. She has sold her soul to the devil, long time ago.

Ade if you can not see anything that the president has then you are either blind or willfully ignorant. Dele Momodu us just an opportunist. yes the airports definitely need refurbishing but this rarely criticised past administrations and we all know the decay in our govt today did not start when GEJ was elected.A lot of Nigerian journalists are messed up I swear.

      January 19, 2015 at 11:56 am

I don’t think that’s all there is to this. See it from this angle: Mr President’s campaigners have stated the renovation of this airport as one of his achievements. In your own unbiased opinion, does this look like something to be happy about and cheer for?

    • FOR

      January 21, 2015 at 10:06 pm

Exactly mr David!!!! You are so right!! It’s a shame!!

    • Dee

      January 19, 2015 at 12:02 pm

Stop making silly excuses for GEJ , do you know how much this government claims to have spent on renovation the airport? We have every right to ask where the money went to. I’m not surprised anyway after all GEJ said stealing is not corruption and he said it was wrong for Buhari to jail Jim Nwobodo for stealing money that is not even enough to buy a Car! Shame

    • NaijaPikin

      January 19, 2015 at 6:40 pm

Noooo. The airport was just renovated. This has been a bragging point for the Jonathan Administration. Do you know how much we borrowed from China for this airport renovation? Do you know the crazy interest being paid on those loans? Only for us to see this digusting rot of a place.

So no my friend, this is not about change is slow, this is about change happened, but corruption did not allow for it to be positive change.

first of all ’embarrassing’ is the word. These airports are undergoing change. I mean change not chan-gy like the APC flagbearer will call it. vote for continuity rather than hand our airports to a government with no intergrity. we still need the original certificates of GMB

True… I saw Dele Momodu last night at the airport, and it is really an eyesore the airport and a disgusting experience. There was traffic driving up the bridge to the entrance of the airport and I had to come down from the car with my suitcases ( Thank God my kid brother was with me) and dragged them on brown sand/rugged pathway. On getting to the entrance we were literarily looking like we had gone to hawk gala. Our feet, shoes, suitcases jeans were all filled with brown sand and suitcases also destroyed.
On the other hand, GEJ is hustling to come back… How dare he?

Where do I start with my story about this airport?? Is it the oppressive heat, the wrecked escalators, dead lifts…..etc. I remember this airport in the early 90’s and it was a dream compared to the tragedy it is today.

    • I pajamas lee

      January 21, 2015 at 3:28 pm

I remember when I got to airport with my kids, 2 years ago, come n see drama, the kids screamed and said mum the escalators were not working, then we got to the lift too, they were also dead, my kids were like what the he’ll is going on, no light, it’s really hot, men!! I think we need a better change in nigeria.

    • JustSaying

      January 21, 2015 at 8:18 am

Well said! THE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT GIVES ONE THE FIRST IMPRESSION ABOUT ANY COUNTRY (that is if you travel by air) A frequent flyer will understand that what he is saying is true. I once spent about 3 hours trying to get one box! and more planes were landing, adding to the difficulty of getting that box. And my brother who came to pick me that night was very angry. The episode of a leaking roof at the departure lounge is for another day 🙁

We can’t continue to ignore our problems like they don’t exist.

    • Mz Socially Awkward...

      January 19, 2015 at 2:32 pm

Don’t worry for him. As long as there’s still money to be made in Nigeria, oyibos will continue to arrive and endure our crippling lack of amenities.

After all, when the kidnapping crises in the Niger Delta was at its peak, expatriates were still visiting the region for work assignments. He’ll be okay.

    • Mohammad

      January 19, 2015 at 5:13 pm

It’s not so much that I’m worried for him when he finally gets into his hotel. It’s more that that will be the image he has of my country, and that will be hard to repair.

Plus, he doesn’t quite fit people’s general perception of an expatriate. I know I mentioned business but what I meant was that it was work-related rather than for tourism. He is there for science training and as well-travelled as he is, I don’t think anywhere he has been thus far will have prepared him from the shock I can see from these photos.

It is important that we keep tweeting and re-tweeting these photos and force the agenda to relate to our concerns as citizens. What happens otherwise is that the only debates that will be had will be about whether GMB has a school-leaving certificate or not, robbing us of valuable conversations on issues that most affect us.

People like you with perpetual poverty imprinted on their souls are why we can’t seem to go any where. Why can’t you just accept the truth, are you allergic to better living, assuming you’ve hone to other countries, do you not see their airport? Regardless of what the previous govt did the fact remains that if don’t hold any govt accountable things will keep getting worst, eventually you will have to travel to Ghana to go anywhere because it will get to a point where it will no longer be safe for planes.
My God what kind of people do we gave in this country, people content in eating from the floor and when better is demanded the scream half bread is better than none? Why must you endure half bread when you can afford a whole entrée? Do you know how much this supposed airport renovation put Nigeria in deficit only to now know that the money went to probably a few people’s purse? Why do you not want better for your children? In the same way nothing is maintained yet no new infrastructures are built? How can Nigeria in all its riches still be happy answering 3rd word country? Am sure you go to Dubia for vacation, do you believe Dubia is wealthier than Nigeria, yet look what good governance can get a country, has it always been so in united Emirates? Look at Ghana has Ghana always been this way? It starts with one person, stop making excuses and hold your leaders accountable for the job you elected them to do. Stop letting PDP or APC control the conversation, let Nigerians talk about what matter to them, what will make their life better; let’s put these thieves in their place! Enough with the sentiment, the presidency is a position with a lot of responsibility if a candidate fail to achieve the goal set by his constituents, he should be replaced, that simple.
Look at the state of the Union, inspire of all the president Obama have done, (which all can see) Americans still hold him responsible for the ones he didn’t do, they expect him to accomplish every task set for him. Why can’t we Nigerians copy good thing amongst all the crap we copy from Americans?

    • Nkechi J.

      January 22, 2015 at 3:18 pm

Why are you so suck on stupid? Who’s office hired the contractors that did this nonsense job? Do you know how much of your unborn children’s future was supposedly invested in this eyesore? The money borrowed for this job from China will have to be paid by next generation; that money could have be used to renovate roads, schools and save lives instead of going into one person’s or a few people’s)bags.
Are you allergic to better infrastructures?
Let me school you on how a democratic govt works.
The president is our employee, via election, we employ him to manage the affairs of the country and we employ senators to assist him by supervising (senators represent individual states to make sure each are represented in the decision ).
Now the president is one person, and cannot possible do every job; so he divided the affairs into ministries, and employ (by appointment) trusted well knowledgeable individuals in specific areas to run day to day affairs in specific ministries. When things go wrong we hold our employee (the president) responsible of the job we hired him to do, the president holds his employee (the minister) responsible for the task he put him in charge of, the minister will further hold his contractors responsible.
My dear this is what a functional check and balance system looks like.
Citizens of Nigeria have no business with the ministers becos we did not hire them, no matter how pissed we are about their performance all we can do is let our president and senators know that if they cannot do the job we hired them for, we the citizens have the right to fire them by voting them out the next election.
Becos in Nigeria we the citizens don’t know our right, or some of us have sold our rights for peanuts, we don’t hold people responsible for anything; the contractors, ministers, senators and president proceed to sharing our resources then tell us whatever nonsense they feel, people like you will come here and defend the thieves stealing from you. #SMH
President GEJ don’t have to go mop the toilet, but when an international airport look as horrendous and smell as awful as MMIA does, (my dear nothing works in this , not just the flooded and unkept toilet), we the citizens should cry out. The bus stops with the president so no more excuses, he needs to do his job.
Let me simplify it for some slow people here. You go to a restaurant, order chicken, they give you pig, you’re mad, you want something done, no matter how mad you are, you cannot fire the employee that messed up your order, all you can do is talk to the manager who then takes the necessary actions.
A little over simplified, but basically the same concept!

  13. Nigerian

    January 19, 2015 at 11:25 am

MY DEAR Jonathan supporter. Please stop this rant about the problems Jonathan inherited. It’s like a student consistently failing and saying it’s because the questions were too hard. Then drop out of school or go back a few classes. You can’t come back and say you have failed the last 6years because the job was too hard but pls give me another 4years to fail some more and play with the fate of 200million people. I don’t think we understand what the job of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria means.
Instead of being defensive, can you please list 10 major achievements of Jonathan’s 6year administration. Just 10.

    • Banjo

      January 19, 2015 at 2:11 pm

Special: No they shouldn’t maintain it because it is our job. The govt is the manager of every affair of this nation. Anyone that affect us, they should exercise power on us and guide us. An instance is lasma in lagos, imagine if we don’t have lasma and the effects it will bring on the roads. It is our leaders duties. Infact, what Mr Dele did, GEj should be doing it. Just take a spontaneous and surprise stroll across some key facilities like this MMA airport or sea ports to see development for yourself. But, he will think it.
Every accident that happen due to poor or bad road, it is GEJ and that govt that saddle with the duty for repairs and maintenance that will responsible. The blood of dead people will forever hang on their neck. Some ppl will regret why they assume some leadership positions. It is not child play. It is for people with vision, passion and courage.

    • MissM

      January 19, 2015 at 4:17 pm

Exactly what Nigerians don’t understand, we are our own problem. The government has tried it’s best in renovating the airport, now it’s up to the airport officials to maintain it. Our problem in this country is we do not know how to maintain things properly. So, Mr Dele Momodu instead of accusing Jonathan, you should also accuse the officials of lack of maintenance.

  16. sayo

    January 19, 2015 at 11:47 am

@Mr Right, such a classless point. Definitely you have bigger problems that this administration has not solved cos u said the sorry sight of the airport is the least of your problems and you want same man back in office? I pity this nation.

  17. Blue

    January 19, 2015 at 11:48 am

@ YASMINA….It is obvious that you have missed the point. Mr Momodu is talking more about the fact that the Airport was said to have been recently refurbished, but is still in its depilating state. He is calling the attention of the President to it because tons of millions of naira has probably been paid to some people, who did nothing! And it is possible for him not to notice this as he always flies from the Presidential wing, which I believe, is kept in the best shape!

Now, the real problem I have with you is that you are one of the Nigerians who make excuses for bad behaviours of government. Did you just say the Airport needs refurbishment? Should we refurbish every year? when we could just cultivate a simple maintenance culture and hold people in charge of projects responsible, rather than ”see & waka pass? Just because Mr Momodu doesn’t support the present administration means that he cannot complain without it being turned around as politically motivated?

    Na wa for you o!!

  18. llll

    January 19, 2015 at 12:10 pm

The poor maintenance of public facilities is imminent so long as no established system/mechanisms are put in place by the government. No one is talking GEJ here, but a credible government that yearn to needs of it’s people; we can’t achieve this without the right maintenance mechanisms put in place (and monitored as well) . We are not talking about airports in less commercial states (no offense meant to these states), but the most popular and commercial airport in Nigeria. It’s rather a shame that the government condones far too many avoidable lapses (deliberate and selfish act) under it’s nose. 54 years since independence and we still discussing how to maintain toilets and how to make elevators move, or worse still, how to purchase the right escalators. This is self inflicted pain by a nation that robs and bleeds itself every passing day.

There are no special airports for the presidency, GEJ and his entourage transit from the same airports as you and me – It’s rather a shame that even the government can be so insensitive on the welfare and aftercare of it’s citizens. For God’s sake, flight/travels are meant to be leisure activities and not a ‘walk in the wilderness’.

I leave it on this note!

I rather a clueless jonathan than a 73years old selfish grandpa that should be resting to rule nija.the truth is that ther are people in nigeria who can rule but they wouldn’t be allowed the position.

As the clue less rule so will NigeriaFall deeper into a sinking hole.
I’m sure you have older relatives ask them how Nigeria was like when buhari ruled.
      Dollar and naira we’re equivalent.
All out debt was paid off.

If this is your judgment, then you are benefiting directly from the so called “clueless friend Jonathan.” Yes, that’s the fact because Buhari is not offering you anything. And i don’t blame you, my ppl will say poverty is a bastard. He no get mama or papa, you are on your own(OYO). Besides, i work for the govt at the fct level and earn my salary but that will not make me to speak against the truth.
I am not saying Buhari is best or our saviour but he will be better than your clueless GEJ, your friend.

Somebody at the airport is in trouble!

Maintenance is a problem in Nigeria, too.

    January 19, 2015 at 2:37 pm

I have thought long and hard about this airport fiasco. The best solution in my opinion, is to build a brand new airport and hire a foreign company that employs oyibo people to run it for like 10years with a few Naija people as understudies. In fact, when they are ready to turn the management over to naijas, they should hire some of us that have been living abroad for at least 30yrs and are already set to a standard. Then, the GM should report directly to the president and the president himself should randomly pass through the airport. The bottom line – maintenance culture. When the leadership of the country is not opened eyed, how can the main door Into the country look tush?

Shouldn’t Dele Momodu be sending this to a senior person who is part of the airport authorities or something – in the years I have traveled (I belong to Gen Y), MMIA has always been a hot mess – even before President Johnathan…
    Propaganda every where!!!

My naija peeps are always too quick to praise and defend mediocrity. I was traveling through Nigerian airports and was ashamed and saddened at the state the airports, all I could see was the crappy job done by the contractors & in some instances looked like the job was abandoned half way.
In a country like Nigeria where no one is being held accountable & corruption is epidemic you can pretty much expect no repercussion.

You people amaze me. This is a general disease in Nigeria. We citizens care less of our environmnent; our houses, compounds, market place, eatries, banks, private businesses. Yet we call GEJ at every bit of wahala in this country. How much have u handled ur own environment for u to blame the government? Your papa go send u go school, ur papa will be responsible wen u fail exam.

    January 19, 2015 at 8:19 pm

@KK: That’s okay. GEJ should continue to sit down and be passive while they continue to “shit”(destroy) around, soil his name, his reputation and his administration. Who is losing and who is winning? Nobody know any maintenance worker or the Aviation top board management. Every result each portfolio have, GEJ compel it. He has a hand in it. The result of this airport is his handiwork and he has to take full responsibility for it and if denied it. We will question him, who appointed the Aviation minister and other top management? Answer:

  32. Nee

    January 19, 2015 at 8:21 pm

How people can defend mediocrity sha! Jonathan doesn’t have to be the aviation minister to make things work. He is the boss of the aviation minister believe.
Everything about MMIA is all wrong. I was trapped for some minutes. The alarm bell button was stiff….last year me and some friends were coming out of the airport and saw just ONE man cuttin grass with what looked like a blunt cutlass under the very hot sun…one of us even took pictures. It was a sad sight…of backwardness. please GEJ is really PRO-CORRUPTION otherwise I don’t see why the airport and the road that leads to it should look like it does today!

    January 19, 2015 at 9:09 pm

The airport wasn’t any better before his administration either. He wouldn’t change that over night and no! Not even in 4yrs.this is the best the airport has been. And renovations are still on going but with the way Nigeria is set up, they just lack Maintenance.

well with all been said, enough of pdp they dont own nigeria now. Let other party rule and let be the judge in 4years time. If pdp should win this election again, nigeria could end up being like Egypt of few years back. I’m sure my Yoruba people are not ready for war oo. Even if others are use to it. Abeg jonathan you have achieved something in pdp house, some were the pioneer you be the end of pdp ruler of our dear country Biko.

After reading several comments am happy. 1st I am even happy to read comments that are against Dele. Fine, this is freedom of speech. I will neva criticize them. But the fact remains that Dele should be congratulated for a job well done. He should be encouraged. I see GEJ going out. That is the beauty of democracy. Moreover, 9jans are getting wiser. We now know that there is power in our thumb. Vote wisely. Vote for change.

Please I saw pain in every body heart but dele momodu din.t finish the job apc paid him to do because everyone must know that this is a political propaganda to buy more vote for gej opponent because I see the way people is reacting the airport have been in the mess for a long time why now dele posting all this picture to gej during election period not that I am happy to see nigeria international airport looks like bin there are people who just ready to spoil that country gej can’t do all alone he needs righteous people this sets of democratic leaders we have now will soon see revolution bought apc and pdp are all corrupt the worst mistakes nigeria will make is to elect buhari to power with all the political hyenas following him the inflation will high .buhari maybe good but the problem is the followers will destabilise him as they do gej now people are watching we in. Are waiting to hear any candidates who will promise to stop the deportation of nigerians without passport why will the airport good when the airport is receiving the highest deportee in the whole world even indian and china that have the highest population their airport don’t receive deportee like mmia the all system is curse our embassadors are the worst in the world European countries and the world know s it is against u.n law to deport immigrants without his original passport and and it’s against the law to deport more than 5 person in one nationallity but nigeria embassy will collect bribes from the European and come to identify you without going into details they will issue t.c travelling certificate then the European will now chartered a plain and pack everybody to lagos then you see the worst of the staff working in airport shamelessly asking you for money asking haven’t you make money before they deport you dele didn’t see that. There is no airport in the world they charter flights and drop deportee like lagos and they are doing it illegally gej is not our problem we are the problem to our self nigeria is curse we need god intervention

The airports are a mess like this, because we have animals as citizens, no respect for others. The staff, the passengers, all of us. Come and see the state of my office in VI with all the formings , u will die. The president has done what’s right to give directives for renovation, all of you here, go back to your homes and offices and take a look at your surroundings, think of how you treat people and examine if u do the right thing or just for you and money including this buffoon of a sad sycophant, thank God you saved your pennies collected from people you feature in your ovation for presidential campaign. And next time address your complaint to the airport authorities or the aviation minister, there is one you know. Notice me by force .Even if Obama was Nigeria’s president , no change if we don’t. change.

The state of MIA is in a complete mess and I very sure maintainace funds is on going for the betterment of this so called airport. To start with, on the day of my arrival 05/12/2014, it took me about 2hours to get my luggages because only one conveying belt was working in an international airport. Whereas, if you travel abroad, before you get to immigration checks your bags are already waiting for you on the conveying belt. I think is kind of report is of paramount importance for our great nation so that things can be in order and all can enjoy. God bless Nigeria.

Now this airport was renovated and many people sang it praises, is it the job of the president to come and clean the airport and maintain it. These attacks should be directed to FAAN and its maintenance partners who embezzle money on a daily basis and do nothing.

Dele Momodu, this is very low for a man as you. Do not forget we know of your history of 419 and all the shady scam you have in your diary.

Note I am neither for Goodluck or Buhari but just a voice of reason.

Pls be realistic, this airport has been under transformation for over a year. If it is in dis state now then the so called transformation is sham. some how i am pushed to say something although i have never used a toilet @ MMIA the picture is an eyesore but that is not the job of mr president like it or leave it, the senior members or employes of the MMIA should be shown those pictures for them to deal with their staffs and train them properly.

That GEJ is the president of Nigeria , he should not be blamed for everything that should be refered to the minister of aviation telling what is he doing as a minister is that not his job? If everybody do what they are contracted to do or appointed to do we won’t have any issues like this so pls do not blame Mr president.

I do not know Dele Momodu from anywhere neither am I a journalist. But the truth be told. The Laos International airport is a sorry sight and all the pictures posted by Mr Momodu are actually true. I personally feel ashamed as a Nigerian . The toilets are a no go area. The whole place is stuffy and dingy. Checking in your luggage is an ordeal cos by the time u are done … you are surely dripping of sweat. .. I experienced personally during the rainy season and we were seated inside waiting to board … the boards were leaking and we had to look for places to hide. Such a shame !!

  58. Ope Coker

    January 22, 2015 at 11:53 pm

true, our airport is in an abject state but Dele Momodu has no moral leg to stand on. His Ovation magazine celebrates many of the people who have run Nigeria aground. So, I don’t understand what is agenda is.

I was at the airport recently, that airport is an apology. Meanwhile, the pictures being circulated on social media by TAN members show that the airport is now of international standard. Let the truth be told, GEJ has fumbled seriously. Why telling bundles of lies?

Lets be real and forget sentiments. The airport is a national disgrace. I feel ashamed when i return to the country after a vacation. It stinks!!! The facilities are not working…. Thats the first impression and pride for any country….

    February 28, 2015 at 10:28 am

Thank you everyone. I have read all the comments posted and i can feel everybody’s oassion for our beloved country. Everyone made a point. Let me first thank Otunba Dele Momodu for sharing those picture but the truth is that the government knows what’s going on there. They have just decided to turn blind eyes. Asi have always maintained anyone that truly wants to rule Nigeria must be ready to be accountable to the oeopke. Must be ready to be criticised and create an avenue for that then Nigerians are ready for progress. Without that we are still going to be in the same problem.
