According to several online reports, incoming First Lady, Aisha Buhari, stated that no girl should be married before age 17.

She is said to have stated this while speaking to Channels TV at the side-line of the Global Women Conference held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Here is what she reportedly said:

We have heard so much from the Ministers of Women affairs from different countries. We are trying to tally it with what is happening in Nigeria, to find out how we are lacking and in which aspect of women affairs that we are lacking and the ones that we have gone ahead. I think so far its quite encouraging.

We just need to put everything in practice than being in theory. If the government can stand up and say every girl child must attend basic primary and secondary school education before getting married. I think nobody, no girl should be married before the age of 17 because if you really attend secondary school, you will have to be like 16 and 17 and I think by the time you are 18- 20, its quite a moderate time of having a child.

I think that’s the law already. Hopefully she can influence its enforcement or push for the legislature to be made.

This is the job of the wife of the president of a country. Using her exalted position to drive REAL ISSUES to logical conclusion. And this right here is how it starts. Please I need any info on something on anything Mrs. Patience Faka Jonathan aka Mama Peace pushed with her exalted position. Thanks

if she says that one wld hv to be 16 and 17 in highskool then why wld she recommend d same 17 (THAT IS IN HIGHSCHOOL) to get married.. i know your intentions are good.. but 17 is too young.. lets keep it at 18( which by the way is still young) bt chances are an 18 yr old is out of highschool.. no child should have to be married while still in highschool..

@NAKED YOU ARE RIGHT.. vvf IS A SERIOUS ISSUE.. when you look at the way nigerian girls develop.. to be honest its slow development.. most nigerian girls within this age rage are very petite. and esspecially in the north… their hips are not as wide for child birth as other kids.. compare a 17 year old girl in nigeria with a 17 year old girl in america or london, or even in south africa… its not the same… 17 is way too young for a young nigerian girl to be married or even having a child…. esspecially in the north where it is rampant..

Although its a young age especially in Nigeria, But 18 is an adult in other advanced countries. And people are getting married at that age! 20 Years and above is Nice!

Is this woman stupid? A 17 year old IS STILL A CHILD. God, Nigeria really needs help. This is ridiculous. Ideally NOBODY should be married before 25. Wow. Our soon to be First Lady really thinks 17 is a useful age for a child to be married. Sickening.

17 is too young even. I think no girl under 20 should be married. No teenager in my opinion has the prerequisites of being a wife and mother. I’m 21 and I can say this. Even at 21 and 22, you’re not mentally prepared for that journey. Today, most people are more interested in planning the wedding (the elites), than the marriage, and are just not psychologically prepared or mature enough. In conclusion, I’ll say no girl under 20 should be married. My opinion.

So her reason is not based on right and wrong or medical research, its based on estimated graduation age. really? seriously? Isn’t there any health information that shows the appropriate age range? This is scary.

In a world as global as ours, where does a secondary school certificate get you? Why aren’t we talking about the prospects of a university education? The idea that we can encourage our govt. to standardize university fees so that it is affordable for everyone (girls included) should be at the forefront. What is this saying about the role of women in our society? Is child bearing all that we are called to do? It’s a blessing don’t get me wrong, but it’s also a blessing to be able to support your family in a world that is making huge leaps especially in science and technology.

What the woman said is right. Anyone below 18 shouldn’t be allowed to get married. It is at your discretion when you feel you’re ready. And an 18 year old is physically able to bring a child to term without harm except with medical conditions
