South African Police Arrest Nearly 200 Illegal Immigrants to Curb Xenophobic Violence
South African police and soldiers on Thursday arrested nearly 200 illegal immigrants. The criminal roundup came amid efforts by police to focus on immigrant neighbourhoods to prevent further xenophobic violence.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that the arrest started after no fewer than seven migrants from other African countries were killed in such violence earlier this month.
“The migrants were arrested in the Thembelihle informal settlement, south of Johannesburg, which had been identified as a criminal hotspot,” police spokesman, Kay Makhubela said.
Police seized a firearm, drugs and pirated CDs.
According to reports, South Africans accuse migrants of taking scarce jobs, leading to attack of citizens of several African countries including Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Somalia and other countries in Johannesburg and Durban earlier this month.
South African police authorities have pledged to prevent such incidents, while the government announced the deployment of soldiers in parts of Johannesburg.

How does arresting immigrants solve the xenophobic killing that occurred and prevent future occurrences? Shifting the blame on immigrants does not address the underlying issue of a broken system that needs fixing by the SA government.

Good move. I have lived and worked in SA and i can authoritatively say some foreighners are not that innocent. My Igbo bothers have practically turned places like hillbrow into a drug, stolen goods supermarket and prostitution hell. I was actually shocked to see hillbrow was once an affliuent area during apartheid era.Mall robberies are committed by nigerians.Mozambicans and zims are known for house breakinns and spoiling the labour market by literally accepting peanuts for a 3 man job. But I think we Africans need to learn to care for the environment we live in,Most former whites only neighbourhoods now look inhabitable.Enviromental care and sanitation must be taught in every home by parents or schools.

All you have said is trying to justify xenophobia. Seriously? If they want to arrest foreign criminals let the, but saying they are doing this to curb xenophobia is a no!

I once lived in South African. The igbos controll drugs narcotics and any form of drugs u know. Its really really bad. Lots of hang obs without jobs. And using south African girls to traffic drugs to the West to name a Few. When i was there. Dont think the igbos were involved in robbery. But thry do pick pockets and sell drUgs by thr road side. hillbrow is the headquarters. If you are non igbo and you r not into drugs dont even venture there. They have infiltrated the society. Its disheartening.

Lizelle and amh this is exactly what our yoruba brothers do in London especially peckham, they have turned the place into a slum, pick pockets, gang culture, prostitution, fraud ..19 boys like they will call themselves and they even defecate in pubic places. You will be embarrassed to say you are Nigerian. We are very quick at singling out a tribe. Its a national issue and we’ve got to deal with it…well Thank God Buhari is here… The underlying cause of these problems are poverty and hopelessness. These guys need to come back home to job security and a decent standard of living..

I grew up in London and most of what you said is untrue. Drugs ke? Pickpocketing? Prostitution? Yes Peckham is overrun by Yorubas and there is 419 but those other crimes have never been associated with the UK nigerian community. If you want to say that all tribes commit crimes say that, but don’t make things up.
Crime statistics show Eastern Europeans are the ones heavily involved in prostitution, sex trafficking and Pickpocketing. Who is trying to pick pocket someone in Peckham? Take several seats.

Looking to that day when every Nigerian in diaspora gets to eagerly rush back home because things are better off in the country.
So sad indeed all in a bid for greener pastures. It is well indeed

I love how our Igbo brothers are always singled out for drug trafficking meanwhile our Yoruba brothers and sisters were trafficking drugs before Igbo people. I thought a Yoruba person was among the Nigerians executed in Indonesi? Crime is crime, people from all the tribes who are jobless or lack moral compass partake in it. Let’s not make this an Igbo bashing event, cheers!

I listened once by my grand pa” If you killed a human being so you have killed all the humanity ” We wrote many statements, such as, Humanity first, bla bla bla , why we are so different in looking and different in behaving.
