Nigerian Twittersphere Reacts to Buhari Calling Germany “West Germany” & Getting President’s Name Wrong

Buhari G3

President Buhari & German Chancellor, Angela Merkel at G7

For the past few hours, the hot topic on Twitter has been some errors President Muhammadu Buhari made during a recent press briefing.

Buhari mistakenly referred to Germany as “West Germany” and mentioned meeting with German president “Michelle” at the G7 summit. However, he  met with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and not the president. Furthermore, the president’s name isn’t Michelle – it’s Joachim Gauck.

Well, we can kind of see how the “West Germany” error was made. Germany was once called “West Germany” in the period between its creation on 23 May 1949 to German reunification on 3 October 1990. So let’s just say say he called Germany its “old name.”

Here’s the video of the press briefing where he made the errors (after the 3:20 mark)

See what some people on Twitter are saying:

My dad calls me all the names of all my siblings. Does that make him less intelligent? NO! Some people just have bad memory or recollection skills but that doesn’t make them less intelligent.
I would only ask that he puts down important names on a piece of paper before he grants any interview, to avoid such repetitions.

    • A Real Nigerian

      June 12, 2015 at 2:19 pm

Hahahaha! Mine too. He calls me my siblings’ names about 3 or 4 times before he gets it right and actually calls mine.

Did ur dad put down your name on a piece of paper? Or you were not that important to him?

    • No2nonesense

      June 14, 2015 at 11:11 pm

@Scared Homosapien: Maybe we should scrap examinations/tests from our schools and job interviews then because those who fail and are therefore written off as unintelligent or not brilliant may just have the same issue (or non-issue, ass you make it seem) of “BAD memory or whatever”. Tell me one thing good about BAD. As a president, certain things are simply unacceptable and inexcusable. During the campaigns it was Osinbade for Osinbajo, All Progressives Confidence for APC, Nigeria for National (in INEC) and 6 months (for 6 weeks) regarding elections postponement. All these within 5 weeks of being in the spot light (3 weeks into the campaigns and 2 weeks after inauguration). Please, let’s call a spade a spade. The Nigerian constitution prohibits anyone with mental health challenges from being president or governor. One day he would refer to Russia as USSR and Nigeria (or the Southern part thereof) as Biafra or Equitorial Guinea as Panya and you would come online and say it’s okay?

They should let them. When they went hard on GEJ and Patience, it was funny. Abeg, who the shoe fits. Equal opportunity yabbing. If GEJ or Parience said this, the reaction will be the same, so Pa Buhari shouldn’t be immune. Embarrassing lots. What is good for Otueke is good for wherever it is he comes from. I totally agree, with that tweet. the silence IS demeaning. They will soon come up with an excuse. Waiting for Debola Williams to spin this one. Oh wait, he is in Rome for a wedding. President Michelle of West Germany. And I was just saying yesterday that I miss Patience. Just yesterday. Buhari has taken over the mantle. I wonder if he even remembered anything that he went to do there. It begs the question. West Germany ke. Symptoms of Dementia perhaps?

The office of the presidency has never been respected on Nigerian social media. Anyone who cries foul here, should be asked if they are suffering from short term memory loss. Not that this is right, but chai it is funy and cringe worthy. As @Jumoke said above “equal opportunity yabbing”.
GEJ wasn’t shown any understanding, so Buhari wouldn’t be shown the same. Okay, tit for tat isn’t right abi we should all grow up. Yawn!!!! Buhari and his people shouldn’t forget that the same social media that was used to campaign for him, is the same one that will be used to ridicule him. He is 73, GEJ wasn’t the mate of those who “yabbed” him on social media. either You can’t accept something when it was done to an opponent, and then scream blue murder, when it happens to you. He relied heavily on social media for his campaign, this is the ugly side of it. West Germany is almost unpardonable, from a comedy standpoint.
You may say it doesn’t matter, but how can a leader of a country not be at least a little versed in current affairs, especially when he just left there how many days ago. I heard he is sidelining Osibajo, he better bring him closer and lean on him as much as he did with Idi agbon, because Osibajo won’t make this kind of mistake.

  13. Cindy

    June 12, 2015 at 2:59 pm

This is not a mistake. It just means Buhari does not update himself with international happenings. Imagine an international president referring to Nigeria as Biafra because Republic of Biafra was once a country in Nigeria. West Germany was once a country in Germany but it does not exist anymore. The same with Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia etc. Those nations do not exist anymore. Some countries now have new names such as Zaire, Gold coast, etc. There are even new countries such as South-Sudan. Don’t ever make the mistake of calling this new nation Sudan thinking that they used to be one. Educate yourself, read, listen to news, let your aides brief you. Is that too much to ask? If it was Vladimir Putin who called Germany “West Germany” or even Barack Obama, be sure that 3rd world war is on its way.

Buhari, you are no longer campaigning where blunders such as this can be excused. You are now the president of the biggest economy in Africa and the most populous black nation on earth. You cannot afford to make this kind of blunder.

    • A Real Nigerian

      June 12, 2015 at 3:28 pm

Biafra was never actually a “country”, it was only even officially recognised by about 6 countries. West Germany was an independent, strong and internationally recognised nation, Biafra was just a failed dream. You cannot compare both.
And if Obama or Putin made the same mistake, nothing would have happened apart from mockery and social media backlash on a bigger scale.

    • Cindy

      June 12, 2015 at 4:50 pm

Failed or no failed, Biafra was actually a country so long as it was recognised by some independent countries. Do you know that Israel is not recognised by some countries? Does that mean that it does not exist or a failed project? We are not talking about whether it was strong or not – that is not the point. The main point is that there was a country. Togo, Niger, Chad are very very weak nations. Without western donors, they would have nothing on their budget! However, that does not undermine the fact that they are independent nations.

Please go and read the definitions of countries/nations, sovereign state before you come and spill your ignorance here. When the flag of south korea was mistakenly displayed instead of north korea in an olympics or women’s world cup, I really can’t remember now, the walked out of the pitch and apologies were offered. This is not a mistake. It is an embarrassment. The most populous black nation – see the kind president when we produce. #Shame

Some of us fought hard and fought very strong because we saw all these coming but Buhari was shoved down our throats.

Buhari is old and of the old. Now APC are calling us to cooperate with them and be change agents exactly what they rebelled against the “minority” Jonathan without the backing of a god father.
95% of SW went rampage and rebelled against Jonathan. They persecuted those who supported PDP .The likes of Fayose,Yinka Odumakin,Femi Aribisala,Mimiko,Ogunlewe, etc

They started tearing cards, calling Jonathan and his family demeaning names-clueless,Jolatan all sorts. I practically wept cos i have never seen such hatred unleashed against any one person. In all of these he was calm!

I woudlnt feel bad if the insults came from the uneducated and faceless comments on Social media but it peaked from people like Fashola, Osibajo opened their mouths and publicly insulted an elected president.

I attend RCCG and was hoping Yemi Osibajo will play a christian politics without joining the crowd ,but he came on channels TV and lied as much as Lai Muhhamed and i gave up!

What goes round come round. When the insults rained ,insult -ers forgot that PDP have loyalist.
But for selfishness why Buhari when we have Ribadu,Fayemi,Akpabio,Oshiomole etc.

Desperate APC took a man with 12 million votes to wrestle power off Jonathan and paired him with a snitch called Osibajo who is not known outside SW?

What a man sow he will reap, even tho i am not that hard on Buhari as i used to simply cos he disappointed the crooks of APC on NASS assembly election.

I listened to him yesterday and my tots where this man has lost touch.-President Michelle Sorry Nigerians you voted him. I didn’t.

All that they gave Jonathan ,APC will receive in double fold and when we have all learnt our lesson, we will start on a fresh note.

    Where is OBJ?
Amaechi how is it? Are you still breathing??
Shame on you all who thwarted all Jonathan’s effort to castigate him!! Indeed the GOD of Jonathan is alive. Judgment came very quick!!

Mama Peace will be smiling wherever she is.

I know Jonathan is not mischievous but i am doing so for him right here.

When BAT Bola Ahmed Tinubu and 90% of SW came against Jonathan do you think the SS will be smiling??

BAT wings is now been de-feathered and clipped!! Sorry my dear SW PDP loyalist..

Osibajo is now like a pest to Buhari. Hope he’ll quickly learn how to speak hausa cos every one knows he is a spy for Tinubu. Greed!!

Chanji- Buhari will soon visist Upper Volta, Gold Cost,Soviet Union,Gongola State and Bendel State.

Not to say i haven’t softened for Buhari a bit.

Buhari had retired after-all when Tinubu called him. He too jumped at it and enjoyed the abuses Jonathan got even Zhara put mouth small-Baba it is your turn to old age immunity!

I find this quite embarrassing. Please educate yourself on current affairs Mr President, very important.
However this loser hate of PDP apologists needs to stop. You all come out and attack Buhari not just because “what is good for the goose is also good for the gander” but because you are still bitter that Jonathan lost. You guys nitpick at everything he does even before a month in the office. Yes, we Nigerians nitpicked at Jonathan too but what you all are forgetting is that it was we also who campaigned for him and supported him. It wasn’t immediately he entered office that we started attacking him. Y’all need to take a chill and not allow hate cloud your judgement. You people have a way of blowing things out of proportion. I remember when the oba of Lagos made that stupid statement, I castigated him immediately but it got annoying when you all started milking the situation so bad and turned it into a tribal-political war. I also recall my first comment when GEJ conceded defeat, I applauded him but trust my PDP warlords, they started asking for nobel peace prize. Y’all should stop being greedy, it’s annoying. It is even difficult to take your criticisms seriously anymore. Be constructive with your arguments. It’s like you all want Buhari to fail so that you can say “I told you so”. That mentality is ridiculous. I am not a fan of Buhari, in fact I was a little disappointed when he won the primaries for APC, but the truth is his failure is our failure as a nation. Why in the world would we pray to fail? You people should chill on the bandwagon hate till he spends some time in the office at least. Eh funny gaan o.

      June 12, 2015 at 8:39 pm

Hi, Cindy. I think you are me. I think I wrote this your comment. I think I may just have done so because I can’t have put it any better. Reading all the previous comments, these were my exact thoughts. Then I see your comment and no need for me to articulate my thoughts.
I supported Jonathan ‘ascent’ to the Presidency in light of Yar Adua’s illness. (I mean the whole country could not be held to ransom by some ‘cabal’). I watched as the next two years showed massive failure and I cannot describe the pain with which I accepted his win 4 years ago. But it WAS the people’s choice, right? I actually gave him the benefit of the doubt till Occupy Nigeria. And I still did not lose all respect for that government (indeed governance is not just one person) till the Chibok girls saga and the tales of jet purchases without impunity.
APC primaries were as painful, but we took what we had and we used it to show the world and our leaders that we will no longer watch from the sidelines or reward incompetence. Infact, I have been thinking that APC MUST not think to present PMB for next elections. Abi, ki lo de gan?
What am I saying, give it at least 6 months. It’s the least they can do and I will gladly join to critique this government if they slack. Number 2 – the truth is he really just needs to surround himself with the right people and minds. This mistake is unacceptable. Yes, but we can forgive one mistake and on a lighter note, who is to say Jonathan would have known it? Abeg, there are more importent grounds for comparison.

    • Maluu

      June 14, 2015 at 11:47 pm

@Simi: EIGHT MISTAKES, NOT ONE. Remember “Confidence” for “Congress” in (APC), “Nigeria for National in INEC, “Osinbade” for “Osinbajo” at a campaign rally and “6 months for “6 weeks” of election postponement? that’s 4 mistakes in the first 3 weeks of campaigns. And now, in 2 weeks as president we already have 3 in 1: i. Germany has a president who is not “Michelle” but Joachim Gauck. ii. the lady he was referring to is Chancellor and not president. iii. Her name is Merkel and not Michelle. and finally, iv. “Chief Defense of Staff” for “Chief of Defense Staff” at the Lake Chad Basin Commission’s leaders’ meeting. Total = 8 in 5 weeks and that rate, there could be 332 in 4 years. Hmmm, “There is mama peace o!”

The first thing you do when you are going to a meeting is to know more than enough about the meeting and those who are going to be at the meeting. That simple. Buhari’s handler did not do a good job educating him about the host country (Germany) and the leadership in that country. Also, it shows that Buhari is lazy by not staying current in world affairs and not knowing that Germany is not the same as west Germany. I hope this is a teaching moment for ASO ROCK and that Buhari will get better at his job as President of Nigeria.

    For Cindy up there…
Talking about ignorance when you have shown yours so well.
From Wikipedia to Britannica, no reasonable source of information actually regards Biafra as a country. Biafra was never a country. It is regarded as a secessionist state rather than a foreign state.
No matter how hard you try to make yourself or other people believe in your delusions, history will never regard Biafra as a country and neither will anybody with a truly functioning brain. Maybe that is what you (assuming you are igbo) and other igbos use to console themselves rather than just accepting that they were defeated. Real men accept defeat and know when to lay down.
    Country indeed.

Boko Haram is still killing with impunity. He thinks Boko Haram is like the civil War. Religious wars are very complicated. U.S can’t get rid of Isis or Osama’s group. Nigerians are gullable and will never learn from history!

When you have an agbaya who desperately wanted to be president for how many years, finally fulfilling his wish…this is the result.
Why this grandpa couldn’t let the younger generation of individuals with GOOD MEMORY AND UP-TO-DATE FACTS lead this country will forever be a mystery.

Well, the deed is already done.
The only thing we can do is to pray and support him for the sake of our dear country.

Most of us saw this coming.
I was happy he went to the summit with Fashola and I comment on that here on BN..
Truth is that the man has been away from the politics/leadership for a long time. What he should do now is work hard and put himself back in the game.

APC should realize that media spinning will not cut it!!!

West Germany, Michelle of Germany. O na wa. Lmao @ president Clement of London. No my dad can’t make this mistake. He is in his early 80s by the way. Doesn’t look it and speaks so well. When God’s grace is upon a man’s life he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Na Zahra I blame. Instead of doing president’s daughter up and down. She should school him on stuffs. My dad got Obama’s dreams of my father book for his bday few years back. He loves literature. Zahra keep your dad updated. Gist. Tell him about current affairs. Abi? West Germany in 2015? And when he just came back from there? Is he dull or what?

U nid to be a little more sensitive, no one is stopping u on making comments on Biafra, bt being tribalistic and pointing out d Igbo’s isn’t the right way to go. U and i really don’t know wt really happened, but one thing for sure I know is that over a million Igbo’s were killed even before the civil war

GEJ and PDP have come again with their propaganda. That is how they said during the campaigns that 1. he referred to APC as All Progressives Confidence. 2. He referred to Osinbajo as Osinbade. 3. he said the elections were postponed for 6 months (instead of 6 weeks). 4. he referred to INEC as Independent NIGERIA Electoral Commission. You people should leave our competent president alone or else … This is all propaganda to rubbish Mr. President afterall what is wrong with West Germany and what is the difference between Merkel and Michelle. Can someone not make a mistake and use Obama’s wife’s name instead of Merkel afterall, they rhyme (front and back) and they are both part of the G7. Propagandists!!! shame!!! By the way, I heard it was because he called GEJ on the phone that day that he made that mistake, so it’s GEJ’s fault.
