Can someone explain the duties, responsibilities of all these oani. Oba or emirs apart from marrying several wives(including teenager) and involving in rituals. Do they help the community? Do they contribute to better the lives of people and their state? Or do they just sit on their high chairs order for the killings of who they don’t like and mess up people’s lives. And people idolize them. It’s baffling to see these men who are supposedly well read settle for such like sanusi and even more disturbing the pedestal Nigerians put them on.

Please leave Obi out of this. The Igbos are not polygamous, not even Obi

    • Anon

      October 26, 2015 at 1:25 pm

Jennyokris – I think the mention of Obi was used as a generic term for Igbo traditional rulers. It would have been better to use Igwe or Eze (she probably doesn’t know. Even some Igbos don’t know the difference.)

Also, there are different Obis in Igboland. Why did you get tetchy? I am sure you think it is only Onitsha that has an Obi. Obi Okagbue had different wives right? Obi Achebe has one. So, it is his personal choice.

I have to say this statement is ignorant (note, i didn’t say you are ignorant)…The Igbos are not polygamous, not even Obi. Okagbue was! Azikiwe was, Ekwueme is!! I can go on but how long do you have?

    • Damilola

      October 26, 2015 at 11:28 am

      @icareless
If he knows God ke? Ooani, emirs, obas and God should not be in the same sentence. Unless you speaking of small god not GOD of the bible.
These people practice more of traditional cultural beliefs. Just to be in such position entails many sacrifices and blood involved. They are not normal/regular peopleand I don’t mean it in a good way.

    • Peter Emokah II

      October 27, 2015 at 1:35 am

Damilola, what is your problem self, you sound like a hater. What is wrong with you congratulating the young newly selected Ooni of Ife, instead of all these stuffs you are writing. For your information, 18 years of age is a legal age for a young lady to get married in any country in this world. And if the king chooses to marry more than one wife, so be it. King Solomon, king David, king Saul in the bible that you read and make references to, all had many wives and concubines and I don’t hear you complaining about that. So stop the nonsense.

    • Adewale

      June 9, 2016 at 10:07 am

@damilola, the fact that someone is a king does not mean he will be diabolic, you people have a shallow knowledge and that is the way you see things you know nothing about, kingship has gone beyond the way you people see it moreover you should not judge only God knows those that serve him, what is your own

I know right. Sadly, it is associated with fetish moves in all tribes. Yoruba. Igbo, even Hausa. And of course in the South South. Anything royalty related in Nigeria and African counties in general; I’m very skeptical. I don’t even hype or rate it.

Also, the olofa of Offa in Kwara State has just one wife and he’s even a muslim. These are 1st class monarchs so its a matter of choice to marry 2nd and 3rd wives…

its a shame, that such a fraudulent person is qualified to govern a kingdom. This man is owing my husband 20 million niara, and also some of his colleagues. They paid him this money4 years ago for a property in the lekkki area. Since then they have not seen there money nor the land. He’s been making lots of promises to pay back. Police can’t arrest him, thousands of petition has been made against him in the Efcc yet they can’t get justice. i pity the people he’s going to govern.
