Video of Nigerian Maid Fanning her ‘Madam’ at the Salon for 2 Hours goes Viral

Nigerian-Housemaid-Salon_video on BellaNaija_November 2015

A Facebook user, Francesca Joseph-Esenwa‘s video of an underage girl maid fanning her ‘madam’ for two hours at a salon has gone viral – just posted on Friday, it already has over 100,000 views.

Here’s the video:

She wrote,
“I witnessed this modern day slavery today at a nail salon. This woman who arrived in a jeep came with this girl who looked rather unkempt and had her fan her for over 2 hours.
I Watched helplessly and prayed for life to be able to add value for my children.
If she can use her as a mobile fan for over 2 hours in public you can then imagine what she uses her for behind closed doors.
No help for this children as we watch them being abused.
No school.
Still hurt by this.

I went to her facebook wall and people seriously asked why she didn’t speak up and the poster said that the last time she spoke out about injustice, she alongside her husband and in-law where arrested and that it took the intervention of Lagos State government to bail them or something like that and that because of past experience she felt she felt this was the best she could do That being said, this madam so with all her jeep-ness,she couldn’t go to a salon that can afford even a fan or at least generator to power the fan. Some women will just stay and be heaping curses on themselves. Wickedness from the pit of hell.

Why do people open their big mouth to ask, why didn’t you speak up?knowing how unsafe Nigeria is. even in the U.S that protects your freedom of speech, you don’t speak up aboutr everything. You have to protect yourself too. Did you speak up at all injustice that you saw around you or even one you did to others? easier said than done.
One of the benefits of having social media, you expose a lot of underground injustice, craziness without putting yourself in any type of direct danger. The embarrassment alone, awareness can make a little difference.

I can’t even fan myself for 10 minutes straight. Why do I feel like slapping this woman through my phone. See her chewing like “aturu” .
But madam camerawoman, you and the other customers/workers in the salon did or said nothing apart from recording the incident?
    It is okay oh.

I don’t understand what exactly made this go viral. This aproko person was there for 2 hours and the girl was fanning madam jeep for the duration? This girl doesn’t look unkempt nor abused. Three Sundays back, I went somewhere with my friend and her mum. It was hot, I had a fan, mummy was sweating so I started fanning her. Would someone look at the scenario and conclude I’m in slavery?
These days everyone with a smartphone can form paparazzi. Nobody minds their own business anymore.

      What are you on about?
Your situation was different.. YOU offered.
The girl here is a maid to this woman.
Many homes in Nigeria abuse this young underage children and THIS is a clear case of abuse.

You obviously didn’t see anything wrong with this…2 hours is a long time for a mum-daughter affectionate fanning. If she has a jeep, she can afford a mini fan or an air conditioned salon.

      November 22, 2015 at 4:39 pm

Well that’s not the same thing at al.mif my mother is hot, of course I’ll fan her, but not for TWO HOURS STRAIGHT, while standing at the same time. Come on, at least my mother will have some pity. And maybe the child isn’t suffering, but she still doesn’t look put together.

ada ada na wah for you oo,so will your mama allow you to fan her for a good 2 hours? pls answer and would you be happy if that child was yours? fanning some madam for that amount of time, let me tell you dont know nothing cos you said people need to mind their business,i’m afraid if people start ignoring stuff like this then evil people will get away with loads, so i’d advise you to be more compassionate towards others unless you are like the madam in the video and it struck a nerve. i support such videos and snapping of pictures sef, this wickedness on a high level and we are still criticizing the whites about slavery when we blacks are still practising it ojukoroju

@Ada Ada – First of, i wonder who is liking ur stupid comment. I can bet its you just clicking the like button over and over again. I cant believe a human being like you came out to write these. It is very simply why you did actually. You must be guilty of something. You should be ashamed of urself as a human being and also as a woman. So if something was to happen to you and ur husband, you wudnt mind someone making ur kids fan them for however long and looking like the child in that video. So SAD for you!!!

See something o! In this day and age? So they don’t have a fan in that salon? If she can make her do this in public, i can’t imagine what the girl must be going through inside this woman house.

See now, If this babe grows small boobs and oga blinks at her twice, peeps be screaming be careful of Housemaids ooo, THEY SNATCH HUSBANDS!….MCHEWWWWW!

Or if she starts cooking for her with her urine, EVERYONE WOULD DEEM HER EVIL!!

For every action, is an equal and opposite reaction. Oga Madam, your own is coming.

    November 22, 2015 at 4:30 pm

I just pray the ‘madam’ is not made aware of the video and having seen it, then takes out her anger on the maid in private where there are no citizen reporters.

Next time, please try to think of an end strategy, and of what is best for the victim. It might have helped/been better if the ‘madam’s’ identity and contact could have been gotten from the salon, or, in lieu of that, recording the licence plate of the jeep, would have helped the relevant authorities and NGOs to track her and rescue and rehabilitate the girl. Knowing that her details were out there would also have restrained the ‘madam’ from further abuse on the girl.

It is only God that can protect all these children that have no other choice but to become maids in peoples houses. The other day it was the househelp that her madam burnt her breast. I don’t know why there is so much evil clouding the hearts of Nigerians and I bet that useless jezebel goes to church on sundays. i think Nigerian pastors need to start preaching about showing compassion to the less privileged, instead of preaching about money, singles and married, and miracles all the time. I also think that our government should do something about this as well, we are in 2015 for Gods sake, but the Nigerian system is still in 1910 what a shame.

I’m sorry, I don’t see abuse here. This is a 38 seconds video. Why should I believe this Francesca woman? I was expecting to see a girl in pain but the girl doesn’t seem bothered. I was expecting to see the woman yell at her but nothing. She doesn’t even seem scared of the madam. Everybody wants to be a Social Justice Warrior (SJW) these days. What if the woman decides to sue you? Do you know how much the girl is being paid? She is not even dressed shabbily. You have not seen shabby yet. I don’t want to sound insensitive but Nigerians we need to choose our battles. Is it that we want to abolish housegirl/boy totally or we want fairer treatment for them? which is it please? I grew up with housemaids and I didn’t like them in particular because I felt my mum always gave them special treatment. Now I know better that she just wanted to be fair. I can imagine if someone saw the maid fanning my mum, the person will automatically assume that she is being abused. So all the times my mum asked me to fan her also, was I being abused? This bandwagon mentality needs to stop abeg. There is nothing conclusive about this video.

      November 22, 2015 at 10:47 pm

Cindy, Cindy,Cindy… Call a spade a spade o. Whether the video is inconclusive or not. U know the truth and it will set you free. The way you are commenting multiple times, you sound like you are capable of telling ur maid to fan you as well (emphasis on you comments) not saying you do. However, let’s be fair, some maids in Nigeria are badly treated, some are equally not good but then again larger proportion of them are severely maltreated, hence, we can deduce from here that she may be one.

    • Cindy

      November 23, 2015 at 12:26 am

Na wa for you bners oo. All of you must turn psychologists by force. You are trying to read me from my comments. Don’t take it personal dear, it ain’t about me. It is about the video. I think you all are just looking for a scape goat because someone had the guts to record a video. Show me a woman using swear words or hitting a maid, then I’ll call a spade a spade. This mob mentality that you Nigerians project these days is a scary something. Think for yourself for once. It is your type that will stand by and watch the aluu4 get lynched. Everyone says they are robbers…..what were they doing in a warehouse? Let’s get them killed. If you want to call a spade a spade then you wouldn’t conclude that this abuse. I think you already have a prejudice against women with maids that’s why you are refusing to see reason. Fanning someone is something even a mother can ask her child to do. And while I was that age, I’m not even sure I wore clothes that good. And no, I was not suffering, I just didn’t care then. Oh, and if I wanted a maid, I’ve always had preference for a non-live-in-maid so a kid won’t work for me dear.
Like I told someone on another post, my commenting multiple times is nothing personal. I live on BN now cos I got free time on my hands. So learn to deal with it or just ignore me. When I’m busy again, I’ll let you all be.

      A. The girl didn’t even fan the madam for the full 38 seconds, she literally stopped and left, the madam wasn’t bothered, but we’re supossed to believe she fanned for two hours straight! “straight” implying no break!.

I pity judgmental hypocrites like you. BN please post, thank you.

Are you trying to use pregnancy to justify reasons why that witch made that child fan her like a robot for 2 hours? and even tho the poster intervened, that would have been more beating from the madam when they get home. Did you ever think of that? I am sure that you are one of those people that treat their domestic help like garbage that is why you are defending the jezebel. May God have mercy on you.

But I won’t unnecessarily join a band wagon hate because I have also seen people who treat their maids well. Take this video to a law court, it is inconclusive. You can choose to be logical but if it pleases you to remain stupid then good luck to you. But remember your curses are directed at your kids not me. E wo le pe? What have we said that warrants the nonsense you just spewed? People like you who find it so easy to throw curses around are not much better than the said wicked madam. You are both hurting others. Some women are wicked to housemaids, it’s unbelievable. The lady that had her ears nipped, the alleged story by a commenter was as a result of the lady’s maliciousness towards the maid. Some Nigerians treat maids without human sympathy. It’s the economy, if not is she not suppose to be in at least secondary school. Why is it acceptable for children to be in the employ of anyone? This is where the problem lies, children are children and should not be working for anyone. If you offered to take a relative in because of pity you felt for their condition they do not owe you servitude in exchange. I despise child labour in all it forms and will never support underaged children working as maids for anyone.

A classic Nigerian mum will make you fan her. I know my mum would. In fact as old as I am now, with kids, I cant see her sweating and not go and fan her, house girl or no.

    Notice: Nigerian housegirl….wearing Nigerian flag!!
Hmmm, My own neighbour and her housegirl eh! It reach for the mama landlady who lives in the compound to threaten to call her daughter (the main landlady) to give them quit notice before the woman brings trouble upon the whole compound. The beating the girl gets from this woman eh, its not a small thing….cuts, bruises, injuries, blood, swollen eyes, etc every time it happens, sometimes for 3 or 4 hours straight. and over what? I cant even understand. the whole neighbourhood knows their story….the woman has quarrelled with almost everyone around bcos of the girl’s issue, for up to a year now she doesn’t talk to anyone in the compound bcos we tried to intervene in the matter last year. we were like, if the girl is bad, if she steals you stuff, etc, why not send her home to her parents? but no she won’t, just continuous beating. then the girl will run away, and after some days they will find her and bring her back. o ga o! I wanted to send pictures to WAPA or something, but I wasn’t not sure who exactly handles such cases. Since the quit notice threat anyway, the beatings have reduced, at least for some months now no blood and open wounds on the girl.

I once stopped going to a saloon because of how the hairdresser treated her apprentices. She used to slap and beat them for just the slightest offence and these where not even adolescents. Was shocked to even hear that the woman is from Benin and not Nigeria. Those who live in Ajah may know her

Whether it is up to 2 hours or not is irrelevant, why would you ask someone to fan you in the first place????;are you the queen of Nigeria??? are your hands broken????;some women are amazing I swear, even if the girl volunteered, you should have told her to sit down, why even bring the maid along to the saloon that’s slavery for real, is she meant to escort you and carry your handbag everywhere you go?? the other thing that irritates me is when I see some of them at the mall with their maids holding the baby pushing cart while they cat walk in front I just shake my head what’s the point of bringing your maid to the mall???

I totally agree Ada ada. People come here to talk trash and judge but have no clue what actually happens behind closed doors. Plus this person is obviously exaggerating. Fanning a person happens everyday, in some salons sef they have an apprentice dedicated to that kind of work when there is no light. Would you say that is slavery too? You guys like to hyperventilate over everything shaaaaaaa. kai.

Was telling my baby sister yesterday that I fanned my house help when we went to saloon months ago and the generator went off. If same journalist was in my saloon, she probably wouldn’t have recorded that. She’s just looking to create sensationalism and join bandwagon by force. Please gerrarahia mehn shiiii.

Plus I expected this video to be at least an hour long to validate the claim she made. Rubbish.

You guys should calm down, plus some house helps actually care for their employers in ways you cant understand because your mind cant see beyond slavery mentality. Looked at her face again and she didnt seem or look tired, or even disturbed by what she was doing. She was scoping the ceiling, paint basket (lol). Abeeeg you guys should calm down.

Worst part is you guys that do/tolerate worse in your homes are here sipping tea and cursing the madam. #GodWillJudgeYouForReal.

Perhaps leaving the nanny/maid holed up in the house for days and months is a good idea?

Mumu. Think before you speak. The nanny should be able to enjoy sight-seeing as well even if it is just shoprite with the family. Should the madam now hold the child and push the shopping cart all by herself in a bid to look politically correct while the nanny folds her arms? Sharap dia.

    Can’t stand you hypocrites.

abeg shut up ma, i am just hoping you are not as old as me but even if you are please ma still shut up.
Will she be the first one to be pregnant, are there not other pregnant women out there that would never treat a child this way.

But wait, maybe you are the lady in the video sef! May your daughter not suffer the same fate in your hands or in the hands of a stranger.
    God have mercy on you!
