All The Fun & Excitement From The 2016 Access Bank-UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournament Week 2
Access Bank and Fifth Chukker continued their exemplary partnership geared at uplifting the life and social being of the orphaned and vulnerable children in Northern Nigeria as part of activities for the 2016 Access Bank-UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournament held from May 25th – June 5th at Kangimi Resort, Kaduna.
From a fun-filled Children’s Day party which saw over 150 kids mostly less privileged treated to high-class merriment in Week 1, the final week saw officials of Access Bank and Fifth Chukker taking time off polo to embark on more humanitarian projects.
Having pooled most of its resources to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the LGEA Primary School which is just 2km to from the Fifth Chukker Polo and Country Club Resort, an on-the-spot assessment of the school was embarked by the joint-sponsors of the most prominent UNICEF-Supported school in Nigeria.
Located in Maraban-Jos, the intervention of Access Bank and Fifth Chukker has turned the school as the top choice for government school in Kaduna as its population rose from less than 3,000 to over 8,000 in two years. The exploding population instantly became a source of worry for the sponsors, UNICEF as well as the state government.
At the end of the assessment tour, it was agreed that more attention will be given to the school in order not only to enhance the enrollment of pupils but to let them get the sound education under a conducive environment.
“It’s not just about pumping money to the project. Its equally important that the kids get all what is required to get educated under the best environment with the basic facilities,” Olubusola Osilaja, Access Bank’s Head of Corporate Communications, said.
Polo faithfuls and guests were treated to the best of time as they savoured continental cuisine at the Access Bank UNICEF Charity Cocktail Party where guests and visitors took time to mingle and broaden their connections.
Sunday morning guests at the resort experienced a lovely outdoor dining experience while eating breakfast and watching some of the Lagos members compete for the Governors Cup. A great way to start the very anticipated final day, Rotimi Makanjuola and his team clenched the cup by a very small margin, but it was real fun and laughs for players and spectators.
UNICEF Country Representative Jean Gough, who is on her last year in Nigeria, also marked her birthday as she recounted memories of her stay in Nigeria.
The final weekend came to life with the intrusion of members of the Lagos Polo Club, who went back home with their heads high following Caverton-Sao Polo’s win of the Access Bank Cup at the expense of home team, Kashton.
Students of the Fifth Chukker Equestrian Academy managed by Barbara Zingg aroused the appetite of the spectators ahead of the final match with their spectacular display of bicycle polo, which was an occasion to create awareness for this year’s summer school for kids billed for August.
More colour added to the memorable day by the marching band from the Nigerian Police before the final match that saw Access-Bank- Fifth Chukker continued their stranglehold of the Charity Shield by beating MRS in an explosive match which saw the best of Argentine seven-goaler Manuel Crespo.
The icing on the cake for the event was the donation of N10m by Access Bank to UNICEF. The presentation was made through the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El Ruflai who commended Access Bank and Fifith Chukker for sustaining a great humanitarian course.
The 2016 Access Bank-UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournament was the first in the series that will climax in Europe with the Access Bank Charity Shield Polo Day at the prestigious Guards Polo Club, London in July.
