The police in Ogun have confirmed two people dead in attacks by suspected militants on two communities on the boundary between Ogun and Lagos.

The communities are Elepete in Ogun and Igbo-Olomu in Ikorodu North Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The Ogun Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said that the attackers came from the creeks to launch the attacks.

“Two have been confirmed dead. The militants came again and attacked the communities. We will only continue to try; they came yesterday and attacked and went back to the creeks,” he said.

Meanwhile, the residents said the casualty figure could be higher.

A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said some of the victims were landlords who kept watch over the communities because of incessant armed robbery attacks on the communities.

The resident said the landlords had made bonfires at strategic points and that the attackers mistook them for law enforcement agents and shot them.

The resident said some of the corpses were lying at various points in the community and that many residents had fled the communities.

“They attacked the communities around 11 PM on Thursday night. We were outside keeping vigil over incessant armed robbery attacks.

We made bonfires in some areas and the militants, having sighted the fires, started shooting at anyone they saw.

They came out from the creeks. The communities have been deserted. We need the presence of the Nigerian Army, Airforce and Navy to curtail the excesses of these militants,” the resident said.

Another resident, who identified herself as Tawa, said that schools in the communities had been shut and business activities paralysed.

Tawa also confirmed that the residents had fled the communities.

Lagos Police Spokesperson, SP Dolapo Badmos has however said that the crisis have been brought under control.
