Police Arrest Man Who is Hired to Sleep with Young Girls for “Sexual Cleansing” in Malawi

The President of Malawi, Peter Mutharika has ordered the police and traditional rulers to investigate all men and parents involved in a practice where a man is hired to sleep with young girls after their first menstruation for “sexual cleansing”, BBC reports.

Over the weekend, BN brought you the story of a man Eric Aniva, nicknamed “hyena” who gets paid between $4 and $7 to sleep with young girls after their first menstruation.

The bizarre practice also involves the “hyena” sleeping with any woman who just had an abortion and widows, before their husbands are buried.

The sad part of the story was that Aniva confessed to being HIV positive and was still carrying out the act on women and girls in the community. Click here to read it.

Aniva had told a BBC reporter, Ed Butler that there are 10 of them in his community and each community in the Nsanje district had at least one “hyena”.

Aniva has been arrested, following the president’s orders, for defilement of girls.

According to BBC, a statement from the president’s office read:

All people involved in this malpractice should be held accountable for subjecting their children and and women to this despicable evil.

These practices not only cast a shadow on the hard-earned achievements my government has made on issues such as violence and HIV prevention, they also go against a vision of development that seeks to ensure that the youth, and in particular young girls, are able to achieve their full potential.

Furthermore, these horrific practices, although done by a few, also tarnish the image of the whole nation of Malawi internationally and bring shame to us all.

And since Eric Aniva confessed to be HIV positive and that he never uses protection in his evil acts against the innocent girls and women, he should further be investigated for exposing the young girls to contracting HIV and be charged accordingly.

Are you kidding me right now? The OONI who has been traveling to African nations and preaching the message of returning back to African values, customs, traditions and what now; calling for the unification of blacks world over, the Nigerian appointed ambassador/paradigm of African traditions; I don’t think @Nahum’s comparison is misplaced at all…….

BN, don’t bury the lead. The fact that he is HIV positive should have been in the headline, but no worse than the lead paragraph. You don’t make your reader wait until 4 or 5 grafs in to find out that siginificant piece of news. #JournalismRules

I beg to differ, it is irrelevant that he is HIV positive, because it won’t make it any less disgusting if he were negative. This is absolutely wrong on sooooo many levels Abeg.

It is absolutely relevant that he is HIV positive because of the potential lifelong impact it has on his victims. News reporting isn’t focused on how disgusting (or not) the news it. It is more about how newsworthy it is. Perhaps you may want to Google how major news media reported it for comparison. The writer clearly states that there were other “Hyenas,” in the community. The president, and frankly everyone. isn’t focused on arresting all of them. They are focused on this one man because he admitted being HIV positive and not divulging the information. That’s the lead of the story!

I have no words, Africa my people, why don’t we use and apply basic common sense on this God given life? So a little girl who has just had a menstrual period , for the first time and already traumatised as to what is happenign to her body, is now meant to be defiled by this man they call a hyena!!! Tofiakwa, for what purposes, is this not being as savages where they white man called us this before, is this not worse behavior than being an animal, all in the name of customs, abeg, this has to stop immediately and people know its wrong but fear and poverty will keep you down below room temperature, it is time we spoke out on all the injustices that our so called culture does to our women and girls, I am disgusted beyond measure. Africans, wetin? when will this madness and monstrosities on our females end, Haba!! This is nothing but sheer madness and its a man doing this, there is nothing beneficial here beside pedophilia – kai, we don suffer!

Honestly I thought this was story was not true despite the fact that I watched the vidoe clip, maybe because the man was not speaking English…but with this I sadly believe. Some people are really mentally retarded in this world…this is not just about ignorance.

So my question is, what if BBC never reported on this? My God what century is this and we are still hearing of such things? In the earlier report there was a government official dedicated to fighting this, didn’t she have the power to get the man arrested? Do they realise how many lives have been ruined due to their negligence? Is the president concerned that now the world knows? Or that this despicable ritual exists? Makes me wonder how many more oppressive rituals exists in such a society, God almighty, you are our only hope, please deliver your people from all kinds of barbaric beliefs. Words fail me.
