BN Weddings Catch Up: Faiza & Jibril’s Stunning Cultural Celebration | Udimee Photography

Faiza and Jibril got married one year ago – in July 2015, and they’re happy to share with the BN Weddings family how married life has been.

But first! The meeting … Bride Faiza starts, “We met five years ago. It was my uncle’s wedding and I was standing outside my house with no makeup on and wearing a black abaya, making a phone call.” My brother came to tell me, ‘A cute guy has been staring at you.’ It was then I realized there was a really handsome man standing right next to me.

He watched me talking on the phone but I didn’t even notice he was there.

After I left, we did not see each other until a year later and well, I decided to give him a chance and we started dating. I was shocked, because the first day we went out, he said,“You are beautiful and I love you!” Then added, “Will you marry me, please?” I remember telling him, “But you don’t even know me!”

After our first year anniversary, I went over to the UK for my Masters Degree. We had so many challenges; being away in London one year for starters, plus, many people were against it. We had so many challenges; being away in London one year for starters, plus, many people were against it.

As time passed however, our feelings grew stronger because he was madly in love with me so I did not even care what people said.Then she added again, “He proposed to me the first day we went out together! Funny guy. Can you imagine that?, and laughed.

Now the pair has been married for a year and we caught up with them on how life as One has been.

BellaNaija Weddings: How has marriage life been? What has changed and stayed the same?

F & J: We say Alhamdulillah! It has been good so far. When you are in a relationship, the focus is always love and how much you miss each other; but when you are married, it is love, sacrifices and commitment that are the main factors.

BNW: What was the best, most useful advice you received and what do you wish someone told you?

F & J: The most useful advice is to act towards your partner the way you want to be treated; with love and respect.

We wish someone told us that we are all unique in our own way.

BNW: What advice do you have for brides and grooms getting married now?

F & J: Our advice is to be patient, honest, trust and respect each other. It is important to be thankful and learn to appreciate all the little things your partner does for you; do not focus on the not-so-good things. When we work to improve on ourselves, with time we will improve each other.

BNW: How have you been able to deal with hard times (if any) in the past year? Do you think it’s true what they say about the first year of marriage being tough?

F & J: It’s kind of tough due to some changes but we keep going despite tough times and obstacles.

BNW: What have you learned about yourself and each other that you didn’t know before marriage?

F & J: We’ve both learned to be tolerant as we have come to realize that each decision we make will affect us directly or indirectly.

BNW: Any other advice?

F & J: Focus on improving yourselves and being better people, and love with all your heart.

“Zannen Lalle” AKA Henna Night – the bride, her friends and the female members of her family got decorative henna patterns on their hands and feet.

Kamu – kamu means ‘to catch’ the bride! The groom negotiates with her friends for her ‘release’ to him. Negotiations are all fun and games, then everyone celebrates together after.

 

Wedding Dinner – this was a reception for the couple, to celebrate the union.
