My whole life practically changed a few weeks ago, as I sat in my living room and watched on Cable news shocking tales of how women all over the world continue to suffer from Iron Deficiency Anaemia. Really, I haven’t been more shocked at such a piece of news like I was and truthfully, if it hadn’t come from World Health Organisation, I may not have believed it.

According to the report, iron deficiency is about the most common and widespread nutritional disorder in the world and here at home in Nigeria, 1 out of 2 women of reproductive age are anaemic and 50% of these cases are as a result of iron deficiency.

I called few of my friends to ask how much they knew about this issue and surprisingly, even the most literate of them didn’t know so much. I couldn’t help but wonder at how little we know and care about something that affects us that much. Nothing else really mattered at that point but my health and the wellbeing of my unaware friends and so many Nigerian women and teenage girls at risk of this disorder.

I had to do something, after all what is this #GirlPower thing we claim if we cannot enlighten each other on things that matter; things that concern our health and how to stay healthy and live long for our loved ones.

In my bid to know more about the iron deficiency anaemia and its effect on women, I found out that there are people and organisations that are already creating awareness and taking action in this space.

A very interesting one is the Knorr Green Food Steps programme done in partnership with Nigeria’s popular Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade- Ekeinde, where they have educated over 70,000 mothers & daughters on nutritious cooking, the importance of an Iron enriched diet and good cooking habits.

If there is anything I plead with you to take out of this story of mine, it is to become passionate about eradicating iron deficiency in Nigeria, but first, you have to start with yourself by simply following the three easy steps; Toss, Stir and Crumble in preparing Iron enriched meals . Toss green vegetables into every stew, Stir it together and Crumble in Iron enriched Knorr and you have a delicious tasting and nutritious meal.

I am passionate about eradicating Iron deficiency in Nigeria and joining Knorr in the fight against Iron deficiency!
