General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd)

A former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), has described prayer as a formidable weapon that can solve the nation’s many challenges better and faster.

Gowon said this in Ibadan on Sunday evening at a one-day prayer rally organised by the South-West Zone of a non-denominational religious group – Nigeria Prays.

The prayer campaign, which had gone round the country in the last 20 years, is
spearheaded by Gowon.

It is the longest campaign in Nigeria to mobilise people for regular, fervent and result-oriented prayers for the healing and transformation of the country.

‘Nigeria Prays’ is also a project aimed at promoting the virtues of patriotism, transparency, integrity and incorruptibility in leadership, governance and in the entire citizenry.

At the rally held at the Rehoboth Cathedral, Oluyole Estate, Ibadan, Gowon commended the people for their usual support for the programme, and added that their prayers would never be in vain.

“And I can say this with every authority that prayer can solve problems better and faster than generals and soldiers can do with physical weapons of war. I have no doubt in my heart that God will honour our collective prayer and intercession for our dear nation and heal our nation of all challenges facing her,” he said.

The rally prayed for Nigeria, its leaders at all levels and arms of government, and the people in general.

It also prayed for peace in the country, economic emancipation and for the rejuvenation of all the various sectors of the Nigerian economy.

In his remarks, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State commended Gowon for the initiative, saying it was a mission aimed at promoting the virtues of transparency, incorruptibility, integrity and fellowship.

He said that Nigerians were the most religious people in the world, but extremely ungodly, adding that societies always get the leaders they deserved.

The governor called for attitudinal change, in that prayer without hard work would not solve the problems of the country.

“It is not enough to pray, but to walk the talk. ‘Nigeria prays’ is a better initiative for the Nigerian project. For government to succeed, the followership must support,” he said.

Ajimobi described Gowon as a very godly man who had always served humanity diligently, having piloted Nigeria through turbulent times at a young age.

Pray that your oil blocks are taken away from you. Pray that all the wealth you made during the oil boom is taken away from you. I like those prayers.

Some people need to get to work and use their hands + resources to solve Nigeria’s problems better and faster.

How long have we been praying? Why are things getting worse even with all the prayers?

IMO, God has nothing to do with earthly politics/governments. If he did things wouldn’t be so messed up.

Countries that don’t pray are doing better.

Governor Ajimobi, please practice what you just preached. The cheek!

This statement is coming a t a time when a proposed clarion call tagged PRAYER OF UNITY is under way. Really the only way out for Nigeria is via PRAYER OF UNITY the coming together of Nigerians irrespective of religion differences to set a particular datpy and fast and pray asking God to intervene in situations that befall the Nation.
It’s going to be the only day Nigerian will remain at home observing the hour as God come visiting.
There is power in UNITY, UNITY is crucial because UNITY is as strong as God.

I never comment, but i am tired of this prayer bullsh*t in Nigeria. What got us into this mess in the first instance. All the prayer that are being said day and night has not changed a thing and will not change a thing, because as David Cameron said, we are fantastically corrupt people.

We have no values, lack any form of dignity and shame, we are stupidly religious and tribalistic, instead of harnessing our diversity and cultural and religious differences to good effect, all we see is our differences and trying to pull each other down.

Stupid materialism without any common sense and unimaginable acquisition of riches and not wealth is what is killing us, No matter the amount of prayers can save this nation if we do not change our orientation and values,

Gowan should shut the f*ck up and account for all the mess all Nigerian Leaders past and present have done to get us all into this mess. The British left the country in our hands and in 50 years we have destroyed everything and some fucking idiots will wake up and talk about prayer WTF

Nigerians should wake up and stop being stupidly emotional and religious senselessly. Pastors and Imams drive the best cars, live in the biggest mansions, whilst the rest of the so called followers and religious zealots live in penury. Nigerians please wake up and hold leaders to account.

BN kindly post my comment. A very angry and ashamed Nigerian, just check the disgrace of the Nigerian Olympic committee, a national disgrace

Nonsense talk! Nothing to offer. We need good governance, abeg. Prayers are a personal thing between you and God. There is and should be no room for prayers in nation building for a secular state.

Another foolish talk from another foolish Nigerian ex-leader. The same prayer we’ve been praying before our independence. Why hasn’t our prayers been answered? God did not cause our problems. God blessed us (Nigeria) with enough minerals resources, what did we do with them? We brought this suffering upon your selves Nigeria.

The most religious yet the most sinful and inherently wicked set. We’ve been praying since the white people brought Jesus. I am a very spiritual christian however our prayers will not work with the government positions being held by wicked men who have been there since 1970 like PMB, David Mark, OBJ, Audu Ogbe, Lai Lai Mohammed etc and the young thugs they have raised such as Fayose, Amaechi, Wike, Suswam, the black Baba from Niger State, Akpabio, Akume, and the others who are lucky I can’t remember their names. Their pockets continue to get fat and our muscles continue to get skinny. That God they are saying we should pray to will continue to hunt them until they return all the money they have stolen and apologize to the families of all the people their actions have killed.

Nigerian leaders tell their citizens to pray all the time because they as leaders have absolutely zero plans or strategy to lead the nation forward… Gowon, probably one of the worst heads of state Nigeria ever had and comes across as not the smartest tool in the shed..
