Heineken Lagos Fashion & Design Week 2016 Day 4: Lanre Da Silva Ajayi

Published

Day 4 of the Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week has come to a close and here’s your BN Style Runway Recap.

Lanre Da Silva Ajayi‘s collection was so beautiful. The designer is known for using silks lace and other delicate, feminine fabrics to create a masterpiece for a collection, almost like wearable art – some might say that’s exactly what fashion is, a wearable piece of art. When it came to the season’s trends, the designer had ruffles bu shied away from the literal exposed shoulder trend (off shoulder or cold shoulder) and instead went totally strapless (look 11) or added lace for a slightly covered up look (look 13 & 21).

    Honestly not wowed. At all. I wish designers would realise that you don’t need to sacrifice fit and flattering clothes just to look “different”. It’s annoying.

    @Christian Sister
    Well said. What is with Lanre and these loose shapeless clothes trend she has been following in recent collections? This collection is not cohesive and has about 4 different collections in one.

    Do I see velvet? For this our hot Nigeria? I am all for exploring different textures and fabrics but velvet? Also, a lot of the styles are similar to what she already showed a few days ago with the Vlisco collaboration.

    Those shapeless dresses may be emulating high fashion but we know they only complement tall, lean figures. How many African women will these clothes flatter? Who are the LFDW designers designing for? Which weather? I no dey see top oh and I am actually quite adventurous with my fashion.

    Is that little girl in the last pic her daughter? That’s cute.

    I love the final look and the fabrics with topographical features. The satin ones. I remember reading a few days ago, a synopsis of what to expect. Something about a collaboration with an artist. I was really expecting more. This looks like something she has already done before.

    These clothes look gorgeous. I’ve seen about 25 lookbooks in the past four days, and LDA is the only one that understands luxury. Not Maki Oh even, even though it’s obvious Amaka works hard and her clothing is probably more geared towards everyday practicality.

    If I want to look like a fairytale princess, I will go to Lanre for sure. Why? Those fabrics, those volumes, those proportions. She ‘gets’ it. Others are designing as if there is fabric shortage. Lanre only seems to care that you look like a princess. I don’t know her (ok, I met her in an aso-oke store once) and have just tried to be as objective as I can.

      So wearing plenty fabric does what exactly for the wearer and for fashion ?

      Maybe I didn’t express it clearly enough. There are many ways to be luxurious. It’s the difference between an IKEA plastic chair and a luxurious King Henry VIII chair upholstered in jacquard. One of them gets the work done, yes. The other gets the work done AND makes you feel like, well, King Henry VIII.

      Of course, people will say ‘chair is chair; clot is clot.’ But sometimes you get to a point in life where you don’t want scrimping. It doesn’t do it. No, you want to look like the African princess Diana. And that’s where a designer like LDA, with her ‘plenty of fabric’ as you put it, obviously not the $1 per yard type of fabric that some designers use thinking nobody will notice. And it puts her collection a head above the rest.

      LDA you go pay me o, for all this free marketing I dey do for una. My account number is GTBank account 095….. 😀
