FG directs NBC to Investigate the Shooting of Reality Show “Big Brother Naija” outside of Nigeria

Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting of the ongoing Big Brother Naija Reality Show in South Africa.

In a statement signed in Abuja on Tuesday, Mohammed said NBC should determine whether Multichoice, by shooting the show in South Africa, has breached the Nigerian Broadcasting Code in any way.

“As a country of laws, only the outcome of the investigation will determine our next line of action,” he said.

Mohammed said, while concerned Nigerians have bombarded his office with calls to complain about what they regard as an anomaly (shooting of the show outside Nigeria), they should remain calm while the NBC investigates the issue and submits its findings.

Dear Hon. Minister, Sir, investigation is completed and pls be informed that the Management of DSTV decided to give 12 hardworking Nigerians an all-expense paid vacation in SA for 11 weeks to cool off from the stress in the country. They could not afford UK like FGN & other Nigerian Political Appointees otherwise, they would have sent our people there and perhaps Oga PMB would have passed by to boost their morale on his way to his Physician. Yours Sincerely, NCCC.

You see Minister, this is one out of 1001 opportunities lost due poor state of infrastructure in Nigeria. Do not be angry, I am sure you know who to blame for this, it is yourself & fellow Ministers. Can you see the importance of a modern film village? Read the handwriting on the wall. Many music videos of Naija musicians & even soaps are being shot in SA/abroad, because of same reason….The private sector is willing to partner with you but it seems you have other priorities. Well Efe, Uriel and Co, pls enjoy your vacation while it lasts. Do not miss banga soup, egusi too much.

Isn’t it obvious why it was shot in SA…are you people ready to supply power 24/7? And if they are to resort to diesel/fuel and Generator, how many are they going to have on ground for the next 11 weeks? And let’s not talk about other “naija factors” that distorts plans and programs….A beg Mr Lai park well. Why you no talk during “The Voice”…We know all these are for the media, make he no be like say you no talk since the Twitter sphere has been filled with why it was not shot in naija!

There’s no need to investigate as it’s not of great importance but the BBA Nigeria is 2006 was hosted in Nigeria and yes there was 24/7 light for the housemates. The BBA that Katung won, it was hosted by Michelle Dede and Olisa A.

      January 27, 2017 at 1:28 am

N140 not N130. I’m sure there are/were other reasons why it was hosted in SA. Clearly has nothing to do with light, if it was hosted in Nigeria, despite the recession they’ll still have 24/7 light. Even some middle class families have 24/7 light, in spite of the economic challenges. If the recession was that bad, they would’ve scrapped the show for this year, so it was definitely for other reasons that it was hosted in SA. Has nothing to do with light.
That being said, Mr. Lai, please get your priorities right.

  13. Thatallgirl

    January 24, 2017 at 4:32 pm

Misplaced priorities. power supply is enough reason not to host it in Nigeria. Did he and the people asking jamb questions consider the sum of money bigbrother would have budgeted for diesel?

  14. Nonso

    January 24, 2017 at 4:37 pm

Oga Lai, please before investigating BBN, Nigerians have been expecting the FG to answer these three simple questions:

    1. What disciplinary action has been taken to address the IDP bomb issue?

    2. Why is our President not vacationing in Nigeria?

    3. Why can’t PMB carry out his medical check up in his home country, would Trump visit Paris for medical check up?

After answering these questions, please proceed to investigate Big Brother Naija, I’m sure the the organizers would have spent a tonne on diesel/petrol to power the TV show in Naija. FG should focus more on creating a conducive business environment and see if our economy grow in leaps.

Sceptics, sceptics every where !! The fact that we don’t like FG or Lai Mohammed should not blind us to the virtue of what steps he is trying to take on this issue. The issue is about entertainment industry, jobs, capital flight, tourism, exposure and patriotism. And more !! How was the Big Brother maiden edition done successfully in Nigeria despite our infrastructural challenges.? Buhari may not be a great leader , we don’t always need to suspect his government’s every gesture. Let’s patronise Nigeria for our music videos, television commercials, t.v productions etc . That is the only ways we can develop. If you doubt me, ask the Indians !

    • Markz

      January 24, 2017 at 5:54 pm

@isaobi. There is a 99% chance that people like you were the same folks that ridiculed each and every (in)action of GEJ. Now, people have learnt from you and you are whinning because you are at the receiving end. When you were all exploiting the gullibility and herd mentality of the average Nigerian to tout a man who should not even be managing a Mama-put restaurant, you forgot that day will always break. Now day don break, you wan shut people up. Better learn to cope with it.

what are they investigating? is nigeria favourable for Big Brother? I don’t think so. fix this country fu–tards!

  20. Jo

    January 24, 2017 at 5:15 pm

Surprising that no committee or panel was constituted to investigate that. Isn’t it obvious? When i initially saw pictures of the house before i learnt it was being shot in SA, a thought that came to my mind was that the organisers would spend heavily on diesel because BBN is a 24 hour show expected to run for over 2 months. There can be no changeovers to generators when electricity from the national grid unsurprisingly performs disappearing acts as it is wont to do.

Please focus on other matters: like how the constant lack of electricity is a breach of one of the responsibilities owed to us by you and while at it, direct NBC to investigate why NTA is still unclear.

If my memory serves me right, i can remember some years ago when this same FG and national assembly summoned multichoice and BBA organizers for airing the show , saying that it was morally wrong and not good for naija audience, so why are they now suddenly interested in this BBN????………………….
