New Nollywood vs Old Nollywood? Chioma Akpotha calls out Gideon Okeke for Criticizing Chiwetalu Agu

Published

 on

Nollywood Actor Gideon Okeke took to his Instagram page to criticize Nollywood veteran Chiwetalu Agwu for his use of vulgarities in movies, saying it was being used too much and it isn’t funny anymore.

Gideon emphasized on the fact that children had access to his films and said that the film and censors board and movie channels need to rate films appropriately.

Well, this did not sit well with actress Chioma Akpotha as she in turn called Gideon out and accused him of being disrespectful, saying how dare he insult an older talent on social media. She went further to say the “new generation” actors lacked morals.

Gideon Okeke is absolutely correct! What kind of generation- Old or New accepts vulgarity as the norm? Do the old generation think of the new or unborn generation. We should critically examine our values and not sacrifice it in the guise of entertainment. Children watch and see these videos and subliminal and clear messages are passed. There are reasons why films are classified PG, 13.18 and some not shown before watershed i.e 9pm in England for instance. Some of these movies are shown in daytime on TV and even adults at home watch them with considering that children can view these things. It’s imperativeas adults to exercise due caution in producing and even watching these movies.

Is Chioma’s approach any different from Gideon’s? Funny thing is when I saw this story, People that understand ibo said the same thing about Chiwetalu”s words! Anyways there are better ways to address such issues. See Chioma that insulted Muma Gee on National Tv (ultimate search) is still talking about respect! Its always the disrespectful ones that clamour for respect.

Chinwetalagu vulgarity became worse these few year. His exclamations! Things I can’t even type here. At a point I tot it’s either this talented actor is a peadophil or a serial adulterer. Forgive me but very decent people know valgarity is not very decent.

Ohh plss, in dis scenario it is clearly disrespect
#1. They are both colleagues, If he had a problem with his use of words, there is a regulatory board for that, he should av reported there instead of writing dat on his IG page where Agu might not even see it just cos he wants to trend and use to advertise his next movie fractures.
#2. The younger generation (kids) he is advocating for, are moved faster by what they see than what they hear, so if he stops the sexual and violent scenes, I just might listen to his point
#3. Hollywood movies av a lot of curse words, violent and sexual scenes and yet all our young ones are engrossed with it from spartacus to game of thrones etc, you really think it is chiwetalu “vulgarity” dat will corrupt them……… I laugh in Spanish
#4. Most of his movies av Pg warning, so parents should control them
#5. In other words Gideon, you can STFU

Chioma needs to take a seat please. She’s not raising any valid points. This right here is part of the problem we have in Nigeria, reverse ageism. Rather than actually respond to the issue of his vulgarity, she brings up “respect for older people and morals”. No ma’am, that is not the issue at hand, so don’t come here and reprimand a man who shared his opinion for being disrespectful. If she removed this issue of respect from her response, then she would have no argument. Is Chiwetal excessively vulgar, yes or no? Can children who watch his videos be influence by his vulgarity, yes or no? Without doubt, Chiwetal is a great actor and there are many other ways she could have responded that would not involve resorting to low blows like “small children and new generation”.

Aunty, pls I think you over-reacted biko… Bros never insulted Uncle Agu. His message is clearly directed at NFVCB and Directors/Producers. There is no doubt that Uncle Agu has demonstrated a lot of talent over the years since his debut in “”Taboo”” in 1994 abi 1995 and I am a fan of his anyday, anytime. However, he needs to tone down the vulgar expressions. maka “”Igwe ijekwo nga…””..lol

Don’t even get what she means, so cause some1 is an elder/older, you should not correct the person cos of respect? I am lost!!! Can your children watch Chiwetalu? Is it vulgar? As an elder/older gentleman is it language he should indulge in? Then what is this older vs younger thing that you are on about? I actually thought that she will come at it from the script writer as Chiwetalu is acting according to a script so those people should be checked. But saying young actors lack morals and he should not talk to a veteran in the field is total rubbish.

I have only ever seen Gideon’s acting skills on Tinsel! Not seen him in any other movie since! And on Tinsel, I do not even appreciate his acting. All that said, Gideon has a point but a weak one, there are age restrictions on what our children can watch. No child should be watching Chiwetalu Agu, that’s for sure, does that mean Chiwetalu should take away the spice he brings to movies? No. It just means that parents should be made aware of age restrictions on his movies and should take an active role in making sure their kids are not exposed to his films. The real call should not be for Chiwetalu to be checked, the real call should be for people to be on guard especially with their children.

New generation movies say things far worse than Chiwetalu says. Some people scream “fcuk” all over the place either to portray gangsta or something. We don’t scream for them to be barred. We just check who is watching. My beloved October 1st had blood and rape, again, we don’t ask for the awesome movie to barred, we check who is watching. My darlingest Wedding Party had some steamy smooch scenes, we don’t call for it to be barred, we check who is watching. Gideon himself and Maureen in the Big Brother house were forming girlfriend and boyfriend on reality TV, again, we did not call for the show to be banned, we just check who is watching.

Instead of criticising Chiwetalu’s act, Gideon should have focused on calling for promotion of age restrictions. I am old enough and I consider Chiwetalu funny!

Chioma always ranting senselessly without reason. Do not pick on the new talents in Nollywood cos of displaced anger. Thery are not competing with you in the Enugu Asaba joint where you and the aged Uncle Chwets belong. And yes Mr Agu’s vulgarity of late needs to be toned down in the interest of young viewers but I see you have no problem exposing your children to such language. Gideon well spoken.

The day Nigerians will leave “small children… Respect your elders…” or any other age = respect out of discussions will be the day. Honestly, this falls on the directors, the producers and the rating board. But since you guys never learn who does what and how to do what, you blame the visible figure.

Having said that all the so called New Films/Actors have way too much…smooching…exchange of saliva going on…we get it we don’t need to see it in excess…the sexual innuendos nko?
you never see this in Indian films an equally conservative country..

You see why you can’t have civil discussions with Nigerians. Their egos hang on a dental floss string that’s why they throw around the word disrespect like it’s going out of fashion. Gideon’s comments wasn’t about the actor, it was about the censor’s board of Nigeria doing their jobs more efficiently. Chioma, go to bed. You have no point. Go away.

    • Funmi

      January 13, 2017 at 3:16 pm

Exactly. But it is typical of Nigerians. when you contract an older person you are deemed disrespectful. Chioma should have just shut her mouth instead of getting into something that does not concern her. she’s just let us see how foolish and backwards she is.

If Gideon felt very strong about his convictions why do a post and delete? Why bother at all? You just wanted to be in the news seeing that no one has heard anything about you in a while. Please and please, everyone talking about Nigerians always talking about age, respect etc.. this is Africa,if you don’t like it, pack out. You are the same people that will fight any young person that disrespects/insults your parents. We respect our elders here. The Bible tells you to respect your elders. We always want the western culture to dictate how things go, to where we are now debating about elders&respect and everyone being on a level playing field now. What makes you feel it is correct? They have so brainwashed people to think their ways are the correct ways and we are stupid to accept it&then say it is exposure. Pls get a brain. If you have any thinking faculty at all,you shouldn’t disrespect an elderly person no matter who you “think” you are. No one should be told to respect an older person,it should already be innate. Anyone who disrespects an elder in anyway wasn’t properly brought up. Itchy fingers wanting to post something because you feel it is easy to now do so. The person you are even talking about isn’t even on social media to respond or whatever. Go to the body of your profession and make a complaint or better still as a somewhat sensible(so I thought) young Igbo man, seek an audiance with the thespian and tender your concerns and complaints. Africans and Asians respect their elders, full stop. #MyFiveKobo

You brought respect into it.. Africans and Asians? what part of Gid’s post was disrespectful.?. Nigerians FOREVER using that word loosely .. pls u need to read and comprehend.. In fact you nd the Chioma.. you have raised only one useless point in your entire rant.. The same useless point that the Chioma raised.. calling Gid out for “disrespect” nd airing his concerns on social media.. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHIOMA’S RANT ND GIDEON’S.. If chioma was so concerned she cld just as easily seek an audience with Gideon.. mtchew both of u r jst .. ugh..

I am actually surprised and highly disappointed, that an actor will condemn another person’s ART!!! ART being the key word. There should be no restrictions or barriers to ART. Most of us have watched and heard worst things than what Chiwetalu has said. This hypocrisy is just getting out of hand abeg.

Felinda, just to give you an example of his funny expressions; ala nwanyi Asaba = Asaba woman’s boobs., Otito eto eze na ike = A boil has sprouted on the King’s butt…… etc. He can repeat an expression up to thirty times in a film. Most of these expressions are not used in spoken Ibo language to express a suprise or shock. They are purely his own comical creation to amuse people. However, to be fair on him, he started with clean expressions in his earlier films but I guess deviated to vulgar to satisfy the whims/caprices of Producers.

We all know this but nobody wants to speak out cos he’s older,so,the truth should not be said? It is increasingly worrisome that most Nigerian can’t comprehend simple English. Gideon was very polite in his post, no form of rudeness whatsoever. His post was never about the older actor. (He was a point of reference) he called out directors, filmmakers and the censor board to check again what they allow for public viewing with no age restriction. But as usually, the typical Nigerian including Chioma (who is a fan of mine by the way) believe that no younger person has the right to voice a different opinion about an elder. If Gideon had come out to applause the vulgarities of the scripts given to the Elder, he would have been hailed by the likes of Chioma as being supportive and standing with his senior colleagues.
While Chitwetel is good in his art, the fact remains that he is Very Very Vulgar.

Well, as for me, they have already said it out. Something he would have discuss with Nollywood board rather than bringing it out to the public, let’s be honest, Gideon is totally wrong, if he has not report to Nollywood first before saying it out in social media. Please am urging Nollywood board to look into this matter and resolve it amicable. Thanks
