“When you walk through that door of success, don’t shut it behind you” – Toke Makinwa shares her Personal Experience

Media Personality & Author of the bestseller of “On Becoming“, Toke Makinwa took to her Twitter page this morning to share words of advice to employers who make people work for them for free with the promise of “exposure”. She shared her experience of being made to work for free which made her question her own skill.

Toke asserted that if one has experienced the good fortune of making it through the door, you should make a conscious effort to help that person who is still struggling to make it through.

I once heard a story of someone that wanted a caterer and she said the caterer will do the job for free and the reward is a good exposure, who exposure epp? Pay people that work for you, simple, stop using people in the name of exposure…big ups Toke

It depends. Here in the U.S, working for exposure and experience can be a good thing. You can discover your true passion, master your skills, make mistakes, work on your flaws/weaknesses without the high pressure and responsibility of the real job environment. However, in Nigeria it can easily turn into abuse, disrespect and fake expectations/promises. When someone does something for free, it shows your true self and what you are capable of doing. It’s the same with when you give without expectation of return. You do it from your heart.
I did two internships for free before getting my real corporate job. And I learned and grew so much from it. My classmates from college turned down so many opportunities, internships because it wasn’t their ideal expected pay.

I agree. Whatever opportunity you get including internships for free take it because you never know where it will lead it. But when it comes to things like catering, cooking, makeup etc pay the money and stop using people.

But now its illegal in New York State to not pay interns. I’m not sure what state you reside or talking about, but any kind of job with no remuneration (intern or not) is modern day slavery.

You don’t have to pay their true worth due to ‘exposure, skills, etc that you re’ exposing the person to, but to pay nada, not even food / commute benefit is straight up illegal.

Blogs that “showcase”‘people’s articles and posts, then after they get traffic, comments and adverts based off of other people’s work not only bank all the revenue but have hidden clauses in one back room terms and conditions page about how they have rights over the person’s content. Bellanaija is guilty of this. A revenue sharing model for articles is becoming industry standard, you can’t keep eating while contributors are supposedly getting exposure.

Toke I know for a fact that you like to get free dresses from designers under the guise ”that you’ll give them credit” and when you pay, you don’t. Stop lying.

@Deleke: You ain’t lying oh. Small small she will have one show that will blow her up big time. She speaks well, looks good, dresses well, she might get her own show in Yankee. Afterall, all these Britico people are slowly infiltrating our TV screens in the States. Even the cockney-speaking oyibos – can you imagine? And then there’s the South African guy (can’t remember his name), (he speaks impeccable English though). I think Toke could easily do it. Why not?

True! Very encouraging ! But it’s sad that those you help later become a thorn due to insecurities. And you wonder if you should keep the door open. Life has its lessons . Learnt betrayal and learnt someone or persons will keep opening doors. So these encourage me to keep the door open. Hard but we keep pushing.
