18-year old Timileyin A has been apprehended by the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit after she was caught dumping her 4-month old son under a bridge in the Oshodi area of the state, PUNCH reports.

The Task Force was on a raid to dislodge commercial buses causing obstruction on highways when one of them saw Timileyin dumping the child.

“The streetlights around the bridge exposed the woman. The officer spotted from distance that someone dropped a bag and started running. He quickly moved towards the bag and when he saw that it was a baby that was packaged inside it, he chased the woman and arrested her,” a source told PUNCH.

Speaking to journalists after the incident, Timileyin said: “I dropped out from school out of poverty while in JSS 2. I was living with my mother at 26, Coker Street, Ejigbo, Lagos and my father died nine years ago. My mother sent me out because I gave birth and could not identify the man who impregnated me as different men slept with me.”

Fatai Owoseni, the state’s commissioner of police directed that Timileyin and her baby be transferred to the Social Welfare Department of the state’s Ministry of Youths and Social Development.

What a wicked girl, she had unsafe sex with different men before the age of 18 and can’t identify her baby daddy. The stuff Jerry Springer and Jeremy Kyle are made of.

Age of consent in Nigeria is 18 meaning any man who has sex with a girl below 18 has raped/ molested her. This girl gave birth at 18 meaning she was raped by multiple men before that age. I say arrest all the men who had sex with her before she reached the age of consent. I really hate how Nigeria is so relaxed about child molestation.

Instead of arresting her and criminalising women in similar positions, Lagos State (and other States) should set up baby bins (saw a documentary about an orphanage in SA that has such a facility and it is just brilliant) where people who don’t want their children anymore can go and drop these babies instead of dumping them in unsafe places. Abortion is illegal, yet people who don’t want their babies and cannot have safe abortions because it is illegal and therefore expensive (because it is done surreptitiously) seem to have no options.
