How Chaplain was Sacked a Day after Governor Ambode’s Wife Allegedly Left the Church in Anger

The Presiding Chaplain, of Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Lagos State, Venerable Femi Taiwo, has been sacked, allegedly on the orders of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode after he (Taiwo) allegedly angered Ambode’s wife Bolanle during an anointing service on May 14.

The church is under the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs, while the Office of the Lagos State First Lady supervises church.

PUNCH reports that Bolanle got angry after waiting in line for some time before being anointed.

A church member said:

The church had declared seven-day fasting after we lost two prominent members. The Sunday service, which was declared as anointing service, was supposed to end the fasting.

The First Lady, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, was present with her entourage. She comes to the church once in a while. When it was time to be anointed, the cleric asked people to come forward, adding that it was optional. Three people stood at the stage to anoint people. They included the chaplain, the presiding chaplain and one other person.

People started stepping out one after another. The governor’s wife, after some time, also stepped out and was anointed.

Another member said that Bolanle left the church in anger minutes after taking the anointing.

“As she stepped out, it was obvious that she was angry. The president of the women’s fellowship and the pastor’s wife ran after her. She shunned them, entered her car and zoomed off.

When we came to the church on Tuesday, we heard that Venerable Taiwo had been sacked. We were told that he was sacked because the the governor’s wife didn’t get the anointing oil first and she felt disrespected.

The man that signed the letter is also a civil servant.

The children went to school on Thursday without knowing that they would not be staying in the vicarage that evening. Church members bought bed and other household items for them because they did not have their own property.

The members said their pastor did not offend them, and protested the sacking. The governing council members, however, said they should forget it because whatever came from Alausa was final. Most of the church members are civil servants who can’t talk too much,” the church member said.

According to another source who is privy to the matter, no reason was stated in the letter of termination. Taiwo was said to have two more years to complete in his tenure before his appointment was terminated.

“Let me be straight with you, in the letter there was no reason for the sack. Whatever you are hearing are what members of the church believed could have happened. And there was indeed a protest by the church and the governing council assuaged them on the sacking. There was nothing official in that sacking. No investigation, no query, nothing. We had an anointing service on that Sunday. The following day, the venerable was served the sack letter,” the source said.

Taiwo’s termination letter, which was dated May 15, 2017, was signed by the Chairman, Governing Council of CCTL, Olugbenga Solomon. The letter also ordered the Assistant Chaplain, Very Rev. Ayo Oyadotun, to take over  with immediate effect.

When Taiwo was contacted, he said: “If you have any enquiry, direct it to the church. But one thing I can say is that I have tried as a pastor to live above board. It will not be right engaging the church or the government on the pages of a newspaper.”

The Lagos state government, through the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde said Taiwo had been queried a couple of times for “conducts unbecoming of his office”.

“The culmination of various indiscretions led to the Governing Council of the church issuing yet another query that led to his being relieved of his post. This has got nothing to do with the First Lady. The Chaplain is looking for an excuse to cover his insouciance. It’s nothing but cheap blackmail,” Ayorinde said.

If she wanted to receive the anointing first, why didn’t she get up immediately and step out first? So the Chaplain was to do what? Leave others who are already in the queue and move to the back to anoint Madam First Lady who just got up?? Oh puh-lease!!!

Please @Orange allow me to re-post your comment here. ‘Cos we share the same sentiment. It is so shameful how people just jump and pick emotionality over logic when commenting. Here is your well thought out comment.
@ Marian God bless you. When will our reading public learn to evaluate the merits and faults of every issue before jumping to conclusions. This same lady went to the church for the service on her own and stepped out after some people have stepped out to be anointed. She might have opted to leave before the end of the program for reasons best known to her. How did the people measure the anger in her face or her demeanor for them to know that she stormed out in anger. The insinuations cannot be true of the first lady of Lagos State. I believe this rumor is straight from the church. They need to thread carefully because God is no respecter of anyone. Every soul is precious in His sight. Scripture says, do not slander anyone, because unwholesome talks cuts a man’s life short. Let us all be careful and look critically at issues before passing judgement. The pastor is prudent by holding his tongue. He is answerable only to God.
      Now mine:
These same “envelope” pastors that have become gods in their own rights in nigeria are not saints.
The viral nature of this drama reeks of political undertone. The church by the way, is a civil service church and the pastor from what we gather, is employed by the lasg. If he has done things in the past to question his motives and his employer is not pleased so very well he should be fired. He should respect the hands that feeds him. The First Lady by all account did not jump to the altar to be anointed first. She got in line like everyone else. He must have disrespected her in some way. No one really knows the background of the story-perhaps some civil servants are not pleased with the governors wife, maybe they wanted her to share some things me she refused be they wanted to tarnish her image. Who are we to judge? The whole matter to me is a storm out of a tea cup. Please fire the damn pastor and let us rest jare!

The real Ambode and Bolanle are being unraveled before our eyes: power drunk, high-handed, petty and vindictive.

This is how some people let a moment of indiscretion or arrogance rubbish their long-standing achievements.

Unless Ambode and his wife apologize to the vicar, this scandal will be a stain on his government for a long time.

Something similar happened in my state. The pastor wasn’t sacked, but the deputy governor left the church because he felt he wasn’t accorded the respect he deserved.

He was given a special seat in church on condition that the would be coming to church early, because it won’t look nice if the church is filled to capacity, and other worshippers are standing while the seat specially reserved for him is vacant. He agreed, but he won’t come early most times. The pastor told him what he was doing was’t right. He got angry and left the church.

Is it possible the Chaplain broke some kinda rule prior to this? Maybe the governor’s wife got an emergency text during service which led to her leaving early.

“People started stepping out one after another. The governor’s wife, after some time, also stepped out and was anointed”
This to me showed she wasn’t even up there first and some may have actually been anointed before she got up so it makes no sense to me for people to conclude she was mad the Chaplain didn’t anoint her first.

Lagos State only voted for Akinwunmi Ambode as the Governor of Lagos State not for his wife Bolanle Ambode. Her office should be for ceremonial purposes only. how come this church happens to be under her office.? “This is an example of how governor’s wife across the Country use the power of their husband’s office to destroy the lives and careers of fellow Nigerians. . If this story is really true… Then I’ll say that Bolanle Ambode should be very careful, so as not to lead her husband to his downfall just like the case of King Solomon in the Bible. No matter the position we find ourselves in life, let’s all learn to be humble. Before the lord we are nothing but his creation, I.e a human with no title whom will definitely return to the dust like everyone else on earth whether high or low. I just hope the story isn’t true. A lot have been said about this issue of the first lady and the pastor. Much as I do not support his termination, from all indications, he did ask for it. First the Punch newspaper carried a one sided story of events, other version surfaced online which appear to indicate pastor was on a power trip. The pastor although man of God is supposedly an employee of the government. He who pays the piper dictates the tune. There’s apparently protocol in place that the first family gets to be attended to first before the rest of the congregation. Common sense demands that protocol be followed no matter what aggro you have with the first family. Even the bible states to give honour to who honour is due. If you feel you can no longer adhere to that protocol for some personal reason, then it’s up to you to resign the post before being booted out. Ignoring the first lady asking her to wait in this instance is tantamount to an insult on her person and calculated to cause her embarrassment. Those blaming the first lady should put themselves in her shoes. Has this happened to other first ladies before her? Why did this pastor choose her for humiliation? Would he have done that if the governor himself was present in church? They said he has children and family, why didn’t he think about them before embarking on an ego/power trip with his boss’s wife? How many people will insult the boss’s wife because they didn’t like her face. Let’s face it that pastor asked for it. We all work somewhere and I personally have lost count of how many times I’ve been insulted at work and I just shrug it off and get on with the job. You don’t get too big for your boots if you’re an employee. This is my unsentimental opinion.

    • Amazed

      May 29, 2017 at 6:31 pm

Go and read 1 Kings 21. Why did Jezebel murder Naboth? Because she felt, as you do, he disrespected her husband King Ahab and did not give him what he wanted. It’s this same proud spirit that, if this story is true, may be driving this behaviour by the Lagos first lady. Irrespective of whatever civil service protocol, God looks at your heart, not your position. Who is the anointing ultimately from? God. Is God not greater than both the Pastor and the first Lady? Does God dispense the anointing based on who was anointed first or last? So why should she get so worked up that she would sack the Pastor? Sounds like Jezebel to me

Well….so sad but that’s the reality of it all. When the church becomes a government institution, such unruly act is expected. The Anglican Church should go back to their drawing board and fix things right. The church should never be controlled by the government!

  39. Surprised

    May 31, 2017 at 9:00 am

@Amazed, you are totally on point. When I heard this story… My first thought went to Jezebel…the same story… I got married at that Chapel with Ven Taiwo as the presiding Chaplain. The man is a ‘no nonsense’ man. He sees the church as a place of worship where everyone is equal before God. He treats everyone with respect and hopes for the best for all. He does not hide his personality or pretends about it. He says things the way they are. Though the church was built by the government, I feel its still a place of worship … a place where people should be able to go to when they are heavy and down and not a place for “special people”.
The venerable is an anointed leader and man of God. It is wrong for anyone, not even the first Lady to do such a thing. This is totally uncalled for!

I dont think the issue is truely anointing, maybe something un aware has been occuring between the Pastor and the Government, and for any reaction govt dont reveal reason for their action. Something must be hidden.
