Writer and LGBTQ Advocate Chibuihe Obi Reportedly Kidnapped in Owerri

Chibuihe Obi, a writer with Brittle Paper has been reportedly kidnapped after being missing since June 1st.

Several reports on Twitter are saying he was kidnapped for “spreading Satanism”. One user said the writer who lives in Owerri was kidnapped over his last article on homosexuality.

Chibuihe is well known for his essays on LGBTQ-themed poems.

Here is an excerpt from his last post on Brittle Paper detailing the previous threats and attacks he and others have been faced with.

It is over a year now since we started publishing LGBTIQ-themed poems. Threats have been coming. Thick-brained humans come to your Facebook inbox and write long sermons peppered with hate and warnings. They’d tell you to get ready for them. One asked Romeo (Oriogun) to send him some money or he’ll send policemen after him. Another actually reported him to his superiors. One Sunday evening in April, Romeo contacted me to say that someone has reported him to the police near his new post. The officers called to inform him that they’d be at his post to arrest him. Although we were able to avert the purported arrest, because it was baseless and out of question, the threat, the harassment, was psychologically draining to Romeo.

Last August, a random number left a message in my WhatsApp inbox. There was something curious about the name which made me ignore the content of the message. But I have stopped making public my locations on social media. I register my presence long after I have left the place, and if there is need for that. I try to keep my movement discrete. This way I have been able to forestall any premeditated attack.

Romeo ignored this, made light the threats and, last week, he was attacked.

Romeo was the winner of the 2017 Brunel International African Poetry Prize. He won the £3,000 for his “beautiful and deeply passionate” writing on masculinity and desire in the face of LGBT criminalisation and persecution.

Tafiaka! The Lord created man and woman and said “go multiply and replenish the earth!” Why accepting European values in an African setting.. The purpose of man and a woman coming together is to lone one another as Christ loved His Bride The Church AND for producing of the next generation.

“Why accepting European values in an African setting?”

The fact that you think homosexuliaty is a European thing says a lot about how ignorant, blinded and wayward you are.

    • Lol

      June 4, 2017 at 2:46 pm

As if it is not the same Europeans that introduced the Bible to you

    • Seriously

      June 4, 2017 at 2:59 pm

Homosexuality is NOT a European thing. There are gays around the world including Nigeria. Yes, God created a man and woman which makes homosexuality wrong just like other sins. However, this man shouldn’t be kidnapped.

      Christianity is a European value.
      Why did you accept it?

      And it’s T-U-F-I-A-K-W-A

      June 4, 2017 at 7:20 pm

You are one of the ignoramuses. Isn’t Christianity itself an European value? Who introduced your fore fathers to Christianity? Who taught them how to read the bible? Or did they do a transfer of the origination of Christianity to African countries after colonization?

Anyone who believes christianity is a European value is a fool actually. Christianity started in Africa/middle East. Yes, Europeans had their own twist to it and created their own version of the Bible, brought different traditions like wear white wedding dress in church etc

The Lord also loves the homosexual, if he repents and comes to Christ. But to endorse the sin of homosexuality is a “slap on The Lord’s face”

Se when they warn you guys to tone it down, you don’t take the warnings seriously. Let me break it down for those of you too thick to understand: you are in homophobic Nigeria. This means it is not safe to be proselytizing your gay lifestyle in this environment. Better take your ass to one of the European or American embassies, where they’ll readily give issue you a visa to migrate to climes that are tolerant to your ways. If you don’t take this advice, then it’s “Boom! Bye bye”, a la Jamaica. Nuff said.

Yet another idiotic comment promoting hatred.
You don’t condemn the kidnappers, but instead you tell the victims to tone it down? Tone down what? A fight for equality and acceptance? A fight against discrimination? Can’t you see how your hatred is taking away your humanity?
      Shame on you.

I can’t believe what Nigeria has become. What is the difference between these kidnappers and Boko Haram?
Until the law criminalising homosexuals is changed, the perpetrators of crimes like these will always have a defence. I can’t for the sake of Sango understand that we are at this point where kidnappers are even defended.

@ A Real Nigeran. You are the idiot here for not knowing whether it is safe or not to push your gay agenda in Nigeria. Well, maybe you are not THAT stupid, because you know to hide under that silly moniker of yours to post your asinine comments. If you have balls, show yourself and see whether you won’t get strung up by your balls (assuming you have any) by neighborhood boys. No shame. Go find a pond, tie a brick to your sorry neck and hop in…..for you are doomed, pal.

@A Real Nigerian may have his or her moments but he or she is right here. We have failed to condemn the kidnappers and focused entirely on Chibuihe’s sexuality. His sexuality did not kidnap or put anyone in harms way. The kidnappers did.

Nigeria can be tiring. You guys fails to condemn politicians and hold them accountable for the crimes they commit but it is someone whose sexuality has no bearing on how well you live your life that troubles you.

You know how bad a country is where a crime becomes forgivable or overlooked because the victim did not fall within the rubric of acceptability.

      Just sad.

And you using violent words in defense of Christianity, if by what you have written shows how CHRISTIAN you are, I pray I become NON-CHRISTIAN. Hate is not Christ-like.

He lives in Owerri .. in the midst of Igbo men who are set in their archaic thinking, who will pay 5k bride price and feel they have acquired a slave, a maid, a baby making machine, an ego massager and a whore in bed. You now think it’s those kind of people you will impress with your ” we are gay talks”
    There’s a Law in Nigeria
He had it coming.. Naija is not a country to die for or give yourself headache over their issues.

    I hope he’s fine .

The truth is, he being kidnapped or not, we won’t keep quiet- we can’t be tamed. And the fact that you believe that ‘Homosexuality is unAfrican’, or not a ‘genuine phenomenon or idea’, is lame. It is lame because you weren’t born in pre-historic Africa, and you just live on hateful thesis, which is apparently very sad, because most of them, if not all, paints intolerance and hatred.
I wouldn’t shun anybody for what he believes in or not. But, you shouldn’t rub other people who don’t have your brain off their human rights, or denounce them their nationality, or make them feel less of themselves.
I usually tell people, ‘You judge people, but your institutionalised books are against it.’ and, ‘Ye who has not sin should always be the first to cast the stone.’ which should not be applicable in the sense of sexuality.
Obi deserves every rights you deserve. He is African like you. He is Nigerian. He is human. He wants a life and wishes to survive, just like you. Just think that you are being kidnapped for sleeping in your bed. Does it make sense? #freeChibuiheObi!
