“Middle-Belters” will not follow the North if Nigeria breaks – Professor Jerry Gana

We are Middle-Belters; we will not follow the North if Nigeria breaks - Professor Jerry Gana

Professor Jerry Gana

The President of the Middle Belt Forum and former Minister of Information Jerry Gana has said that if the North allows Nigeria to break up, the region will not go with them.

According to Punch, he spoke at the St. Matthew’s Church, Maitama, Diocese of Abuja (Anglican Communion), in Abuja on Sunday.

Gana said that the “Middle-Belters” love Nigeria, which changed to a federal system so the minorities could have a place, and will remain with the Federal Republic of Nigeria if the country does break up.

“They think when it comes to break-up, we will go along with the North. We have already told them that if they allow this country to break up, we are not going with the North. We are staying where we are. So, just take notice. If it comes to that, we will tell you that you are Arewa and we are ‘Middle-Belters.’

“We love Nigeria and it was changed to a federal system because of the minorities so that we can have a place. So, we love Nigeria but in the unlikely event that people want to go their way, the Arewa in the Sahel will go. But we will remain here in the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

He also criticized the spokesperson for the Northern Elders Forum Ango Abdullahi for supporting the calls by the coalition of Northern youth groups for Igbos to leave the region.

“One of them, who also spoke is a former vice-chancellor. I thank God he didn’t sign my certificate. My own was signed by Professor Ishaya Audu. How can a man of that stature, of that status, of that level of leadership, says he supports the youths in Kaduna to give to other legitimate citizens, an order to go? Who are you? Who says that?

“In this country, there are no second-class citizens. We are all first class. We are all sons and daughters of this land and that was why I decided to call a conference of all the minorities from 14 states and we had to state in clear words that the quit notice was totally unconstitutional. This is our home,” he said.

The former Minister added that true federalism was the way to mend the warring factions, saying federalism is what works when there is a diversity of ethnicity and religion.

“In democracy, dialogue is the language, consultation is the way. Two cannot work together unless they agree. So, there needs to be dialogue and mutual respect. Anywhere you have diversity of ethnicity or religion in the world, the type of system that works is federalism. And that is the way. And each one must build his federal system the way it suits him. It cannot be imposed; it cannot be engineered in favour of one person,” he said.

I still don’t understand this betrayal you all talk about. Did the Yorubas promise Jonathan the presidency? Jonathan won the southwest in 2011 because he was thier choice and no one complained but because the other guy was preferred in 2015 na wahala. Respect people’s choices please.

Ibos always hate. The only time they hail you is when you follow them in their whatever plans. Once you refuse to join them you become a traitor, a tribalist etc whereas they are the greatest haters of other people. They hate Hausa, hate Yoruba, and pretend to like Niger Delta cos of their oil! Whom will they love?

You might think Yorubas are serving north but they are just playing their game well. Out of all the tribes, they remain solid and calculated. They control the political aspect on who the next president is. Obasanjo went for Jonathan then Tinubu shoved Buhari down our throats. The ones behind the scene are the most powerful ones. Yorubas know what they are doing. Even though they are two face, I respect them a lot.
The North have the middle belt to worry about just like how Igbos have the south south to worry about.
Yorubas develop their side very well, if Nigeria divides, they won’t lose out as much as the other tribes.

Ogbeni, even yoruba will not go with the North.

The minority tribes in the north will not even go with the Hausa-Fulani.

I’ve never dreaded October 1st before. What would happen?

Dear Igbos, please leave Yorubas out of your fight. If you want to leave Nigeria, kindly do so in peace, but let this people be!
Every day, betrayal, traitor, slavery… all these because they voted Buhari instead of GEJ.
I am tired of all these derogatory remarks, Yorubas will not fight your battles for/with you, please leave them alone and face your Governors, Senators, Reps, and LGA chairman.
No region Or tribe in Nigeria loves Jonathan more than the Niger Deltans but we have accepted 2015 in the spirit of sportsmanship, please do not use GEJ as an excuse to hate.

Taaa, sharap dia. Your tribal bigotry towards the Igbos will soon blind you, since you can’t see this post wasn’t by an Igbo man nor directed to the Igbos. And pls when that time comes, you better stick to your Hausa-fulani. Hypocrite!

You are actually ignorant to posit that this agitation is about Jonathan. Who is still talking of Jonathan’s defeat in 2017? Only you!
Abeg I no wan insult you biko!

      @Hedz. .Who is Niger Delta?
Because of oil you have decided to make Igbos minorities in Nigeria.
Tell me, who are the natives of igbouzo aka Ibuza, Agbo, Okpanam, Ukwuali, Ndokwa, Asaba, Egbema, Obinze, Ikwere, even Opobo? Remember King JaJa of Opobo that was sent to exile by British colonial masters?
      What’s his ancestry?
Igbis are not just five states!

      Can this oil dry already?
      Enough of divide and rule!
Port Harcourt was called Ugwuocha in ancient times. Bet you didn’t know that.

Please keep taking the oil and stop dividing our people.
Igbos are not minorities in Nigeria.

All you guys saying we wont go with this one or that one always , make me laugh. You will go with where ever your zone falls under and that’s that. Can the so-called middle belt stand alone? It looks like people just talk without thinking about simple economics. You think countries are created based on tribe alone?

  9. Diamond

    July 3, 2017 at 6:16 pm

Hausa-fulani has really finished this country! Imagine this statement “We have already told them that if they allow this country to break up, we are not going with the North”. Na them be our masters.
    We say restructure Nigeria, NOW!

I have said it igbos suffer from Fulani complex and for whatever reasons the level of hate and envy they have for Yorubas is unhealthy
They will all choke and self destruct eventually
Just read the comments from their kiths calling others slaves lazy
And it’s more ironic it’s coming from a tribe that lost a humiliating war

      July 3, 2017 at 6:50 pm

@Lolarae, Tinubu a Yoruba elder statesman put Nigeria in this mess!!! I love the Yoruba race, although they think they are very diplomatic and discreet!!! The truth be told , they are traitors!!! Awolowo did same during Biafra, now Tinubu again traded Nigeria for a very silly ambition!!!
Even in the workplace,is the Yorubas that snitch. other tribes do their job and leave, but,no for Yoruba peeps, they form a cabal at the management level and force people out!!! I am not Igbo, but I would rather dine with Igbo people than Yoruba people!!!
Highly crafty race!!! I guess you guys are better off with the North, since you guys help them fight their battles!!! The Northerners are even better, because they say it, how they feel it, but Yoruba will first kill you, while smiling!!!

    • Lolarae

      July 4, 2017 at 1:35 am

if the last reference you can point to north and western corporation is 1967 which is 50 years ago then its a sign you really envy Yorubas and it’s not an issue of crafty or not
did niger delta not fight against Biafra the last time i checked niger delta did not release biafran properties back to ibos or pay them any amount but for some reasons (oil and dependency on niger delta for sea) are showing fake love to them. they ask questions like what tribe is niger delta ever since gej lost it has been as chance to introduce a forced union on niger delta and hate speeches across board

so how does Yorubas voting for buhari mean they want to form a country with them?
did voting an ijaw man mean we want to form a country with ijaws in it?
even after north killed ibos in jihad did they not still partner with the same north?

or is the the complex of seeing two main regions that curbed ibos from expanasionist agenda that is now causing this?
I am even happy this election happened we got to see how some tribes felt about yoruba people. its bitterness, envy and bile

You dont have to dine with yoruba people, we dont need anyones help we are a 60m strong tribe with global influence and you adn i know should Nigeria split it will be the most prosperous side of what ever we come out with .

this is one of the reasons i want nigeria to end the beef on yorubas is too much
they hate envy yorubas but for some reasons they stay in yorubas land
first excuse was seaport and airport today their is ports in Rivers and Cross river as well as airport in Rivers and Enugu they wont leave..

Too much hypocrisy in Jerry Gana’s statement. Why didn’t he just shut up, since he can’t say it as it is? Truth is every tribe is tired of the Hausa-fulani. It is only the Igbos that are bold enough to say it and wants to opt out.

Mr. Gana you don’t love Nigeria as she is now. You are second class citizen, only Hausa-fulani is first class in Nigeria. You don’t have a place, neither a voice.

Hausa fulani has taught you middle belters and others big lesson. Mr. Gana, you and your people couldn’t have said this in 1967. Because your people formed the bulk of the Army that fought in favor of Nigeria. Benue people finished Igbos fleeing North.
Hausa fulani, used you (Middle belt), as they did Ken Saro Wiwa (Niger delta), Awolowo (Yoruba), Gowon (Minority north).. And have continued to use you people. It is only the Igbos that have refused to be used. Good Morning, to the rest of Nigeria!

    • Iya ibeji

      July 4, 2017 at 9:59 am

Na wa for you o diamond. Your reasoning is honestly beyond me. So Jerry Gana cannot talk because you feel the North used his people? What do you expect this groups to do- carry a gun and go to war? Or even have an Nnamdi Kalu? How has that worked out for you so far? Every tribe is imperfect but Igbos? How about your politicians who wine and dine with this Hausa – fulani you so much disdain for; they are not traitors like you called the entire yoruba tribe or are not been used in your reasoning?
The difference between you and I is that I know that politicians from my region are working for their selfish interest but you refuse to look inwards, everybody else but you is wrong. You are the righteous and perfect one. Point fingers and throw blame around, that is your M.O.
I’m very well aware that there is a problem of violence coming from some groups in the North but I didnt think insulting and blaming every other tribe but mine is the solution!
Look inwards Diamond, face your group, face your leaders; that is one step in the right direction!

    • Diamond

      July 4, 2017 at 1:47 pm

Yoruba and tribalism is like the attachment of a child’s umbilical cord . See how you just singled out your tribe.
Ok. I didn’t say Jerry Gana should not speak. He shouldn’t be pretentious about it. Shikena!
He can stop with telling us his people will not go with the North because we all know that as fact. Those extras are lies! The worst is saying if the North ALLOW Nigeria break. Really? We are in trouble in this country!
It is better to speak out against injustice, than suffer cowardly in silence. It may take time, but solutions will come with the former.
If 1967 was 2017, no tribe will fight war for only the Hausa fulani to take the entire spoil.

    • Iya ibeji

      July 4, 2017 at 4:25 pm

Its shocking that someone like you has the mouth to call someone tribalistic and call Jerry Gana a hypocrite when you are even worse off than him. I’m clearly yoruba so I don’t see why I shouldn’t point it out that if you called my tribe derogatory names like traitors because of 2 people then it is hypocritical to not call your entire tribe the same since you have political leaders that are also wining, dining and sharing in the national cake with the Hausa- fulani you show so much disdain for.
Like I said before Diamond, look inwards, bigotry, tribalism , hypocrisy which you accused others of is clearly your thing!
As for the problems of Nigeria, people from all tribes speak against injustice and oppresdion in Nigeria although approaches differ greatly. If you think the way of Nnamdi Kalu is best, I do not think it is. If you think Hausa-fulani and yorubas are your problem, then you better smell the coffee and realise the problem starts from your local govt to your state governors.I believe when we all face our leaders in our regions, we are better equipped to deal with problems at the federal level. When we elect leaders that serve us and not themselves, 80% of the problems we have will not even exist.
people like you do not want solutions just shut others up, point fingers at everyone but yourself but me I want to move forward either as Nigeria or with my tribe whichever one is going to give me the kind of country I want to live for my children.

It is a known fact that the Yoruba are tribalistic lot. I even witnessed today in my office. And everybody chorused that same line.
It is the Yoruba I mentioned that is paining you, why don’t you prove the tribalism notion wrong, by defending the entire tribes mentioned and not singling out just your tribe for defence?
By the way, where did you read me mention Yoruba are traitors, and muddled them with Hausa fulani as the problem in this country? Or you just want to feel important?
You definitely have comprehension issues if you don’t see the hypocrisy in Jerry’s statement. If he loves Nigeria much, his people will choose to stay with the North as before.
Why are you looking for option B, to move forward with your tribe? Please, stick to your darling Arewa if Nigeria ever breaks.

Micah how dumb are you? So because I didn’t experience, I should be ignorant?

The Arewa youths that issued the ultimatum, did they experience events of the late 60’s, or did Bellanaija and the rest of them online commenters experience the war? Why is it only my comment you have problems with?

So because you are young you don’t know Nigeria was amalgamated in 1914, independence in 1960, civil war started in 1967. How dumb are you again?

All the conditions Federal government gave to Mazi Nnamdi Kalu before he was released from prison is now been obeyed by President Muhammadu Buhari not Mazi Nnamdi Kalu again. Don’t be in the midst of 10 people, Buhari in London is not even in the midst up to 5 people there. Don’t speak to any media or jonalist, I can’t remember when Buhari granted interview last. You will pay 100 million for your bailout. Only God knows how much Buhari is paying in London as hospital bills at the moment. He should bring a serving senator as one of his bail condition, am not sure if cabals can bail Buhari now. Is only Almighty God Has the supreme power…..

Every Nigerian know that the north sees themselves as masters while other tribes are either willing tools or conquered territory. Igbos are hated cos they said no to that none since. Which other tribe there cough. If Nigeria is not scared, let Biafra take effect let’s see what become of Nigeria.

@Lolarae what a pained asss ignoramous lady with so much bitterness, so much pains around her comments that i can’t even make out any constructive point out of it. is there any sea port that is in full operational in niger delta? Niger delta is closer to the easterners so it will even be better for the easterners to depend on them since they have lots of cultural similarities than coming all the distance to Lagos. where did she even get the fake 60m population she quoted in her comments, well, i have not seen any tribe that is better than the other in nigeria, the igbos are tribalistic as much as the yorubas , the better tribe in nigeria are even the minority tribe , the beef between igbos and yoruba are case of unforgiveness , betrayal and jealousy . they are are both guilty of them.
