“Every celebrity in Nigeria is broke” – Onyeka Nwelue

Award-winning Writer and Filmmaker Onyeka Nwelue in a lengthy post on Instagram advised young Nigerians to stop feeling inadequate especially when they see the luxurious lifestyle of celebrities. He added that many of the Nigerian celebrities are not as wealthy as they claim to be.

He goes further to say that young Nigerian shouldn’t feel pressured or compare themselves to these celebrities as they are in fact struggling.

He wrote:

Dear Young Nigerians,

Garb yourself with some self-esteem, self-confidence and self-pride. We are all poor. Us and the celebrities. All the celebrities in Nigeria.

Linda Ikeji is not a celebrity. She is a business woman. So she is not one of those broke celebrities.

Every celebrity in Nigeria is broke. They are like me. They don’t have the money they tell you they have. Many of them I have seen their bank statements. I don’t care if they start avoiding me now. I know better. Stop feeling inadequate, young people. You see as I beg for money publicly, that is how these celebrities suffer and beg for money secretly.
When I was writing Hip-Hop is Only for Children, I spent time travelling with many of them and I know the truth. Let them shut up. Now HushPuppi and his b***hes have dragged Ugo Mozie into their rubbish.

Don Jazzy is a tenant. He is broke. Forget everything.

D’Banj is hustling every day to feed.
Davido spends the money they pay for every show.
Sinach and Frank Edwards are richer than these guys. This, I know! I am tired of all the social media haranguing and brouhaha and lies and show! And you will say, How e take concern you?

I am angrily writing this because those of you who feel because you are not famous and so you think you are poor, remember it is the little cash that you people send to our accounts that make us dey do iyanga.
Forget all the foreign trips. Do you know how many people who buy me flight tickets?

When you talk about wealth, people who are wealthy don’t throw them around on social media.

Be yourself because I have seen their bank details. And I know we are all struggling.

F**k inferiority. You folks who think fame is fortune need to relax. You are better than us!

LOL this guy!!! Such a chatterbox. He does gumbody to Linda Ikeji that’s why he’s praising her her. He asks her for funds from time to time. Trust me, this is fact. But I like him. He’s so carefree. Our celebrities are truly broke tho. All those their “30 billion for the akant”, “24/6/8/10 million for one show” blah blah is all dust. All breeze.

As for Davido d guy needs to learn how to spend wisely. Its really not about how much you earn.
Olamide, wizkid also get bah. Olamide doesn’t go over the top all the time. He knows his level. Them psquare too get money (but that was psquare)

Linda ikeji is a smart businesswoman, and I admire her progress. Online businesses are some of the fastest, well paid jobs. I mean, look at how much some of these youtubers and bloggers make. I won’t judge her wealth based on how much designer shoes and bags(it’s relative) but I believe she’s making decent money from what she does. She has a huge platform and an established brand. It’s a give and take world we live in.
Just like Hollywood, only a few actors/actresses are actually rich. And even the rich ones have to keep working. How much do Nigerian actors/actresses make? How much do they get paid for their endorsements? How much profit do they make from movies? So to have all of them living an extravagant lifestyle is not realistic at all. And for musicians, It’s even tricky here in the U.S. Some of the most talented artists make less unfortunately and the popular, generic ones mostly make their money from concerts and huge endorsement deals. Then you have few music royals, who own catalogs. So, to have every Nigerian musician pose such a daily luxurious lifestyle is funny.

One thing for sure is, Nigerians don’t believe in process and progress. Everyone wants to be on top at the same time, live in big houses, drive luxurious cars. NOW It’s an unhealthy competition and show off mentality. No one is humble enough to be embrace their struggles, challenges and work harder in a good way. The Nigerian culture has created a monstrous society.
Which has also led to fake lifestyles(fake it till you make it), fraudulent businesses, money rituals, embezzlement, stolen funds and it’s truly disturbing.
The ones making money from the government are NOT rich. You can’t be rich/wealthy based on something that doesn’t belong to you. When you read about Oprah, Bill Gates, Ali baba, even Beyonce, you see their growth process, and what they do.
It’s in Nigeria, someone will boast of being rich yet there’s nothing to show for it. Money just flows into their account. SMH

He ain’t telling no lies!!!! To be fair, there are a few who aren’t broke at all, but 95% of them are….. Why do you think Aunty Ini Edo’s place didn’t do so well when all the celebrities went for the grand opening? No one spent money lol. Actors are paid poorly. Artist actually make money once they pick up and gain popularity though. There are few classy, smart and business minded actors. Most actors you see don’t know a thing about acting. They just run after what’s giving them money at the time. Terrible really.

Lol … he made sense until the linda ikeji part, he actually thinks linda ikeji doesn’t feign it like the rest??! You think she paid 500million naira outright for that house? And the linda ikeji I know did not show us c of o lol you think she picks up all those range rovers and makes full payments?! I remeber that hermes saga lol oga it is only kola aluko and dieziani that live that life o, not linda ikeji not davido not any young nigerian (under 40) whose parents are not federal level politicians or state governors … if you are a young nigerian and your net income is made in nigeria, it is almost impossible to have a jet set lifestyle

    • MurderSheWrote

      October 28, 2017 at 11:51 am

Haha. Believe it or not Linda paid outright for that house. This is inside info. I know how much she charges organisations for ad banners and promoted content on her blog per day. She’s swimming in money. Million dollars things. She is the only woman like that in Nigeria. Apart from Mrs Alakija that made her ill gotten wealth (imo) from ill gotten oil blocs. And probably Mrs Ibukun Awosika. On the other hand, Mo Abudu is broke on her own, her old money connections is what still keeps her afloat. Bad businesswoman.

      October 28, 2017 at 12:09 pm

Linda is rich! I know you hate to hear it but she is. As for the Diezani part, there are many people that can afford that lifestyle. Ordinary yahoo boys sef have houses in banana island and Range.

Look there’s something you don’t know. I know it’s immoral o but do you know pornhub has two owners. One is a Nigerian and the guy is stupid rich but you don’t know his name and I won’t spill. There are people like that. Poverty makes it hard to believe other people’s success

      October 28, 2017 at 1:00 pm

Better accept it Linda is very rich .. she paid for house and cars outrightly please.. accept it o ndo if it hurts you pele!!

      October 28, 2017 at 2:13 pm

@murdershewrote, pls how much does she charge? And you think linda ikeji did not make money illegally by overcharging politicians for campaign ads?! Lol
You clearly are unaware of other successful nigerian business women, is it because they don’t make noise? You think linda ikeji leads the women lol do you know who sola david-borha is? Or tunde demuren’s mother is? Do you know who Dame akpani is? Do you know who marie fatayi-williams is? I bet you don’t know joy olaniyan or stella okoli or arunma oteh babe I could go on … you think these women had their careers handed to them on a gold platter? You think they are not self-made? You think they can’t live in banana island or drive range rover? Lol don’t be a clown abeg

@beautiful, linda ikeji is a successful woman no doubt … you don’t know who I am or where I live you just assumed somehow I’m broke, sad and depressed lol I’m not hurt by anything dear, I am far from poverty and depression (glory to God) don’t believe everything your ‘dollar multimillionaire’ tells you … ben murray-bruce and john momoh who are obviously bigger media people don’t even spend like that … 500million naira cash at once lol is she maryam abacha

I’ll have you know that wealthy people also lease and have mortgages. What’s wrong with that? A lot of times, it’s the smarter thing to do. And Linda if is investing and also not spending stupidly, she’s most likely a millionaire in dollars. Her networth could be anywhere from $1.1 to $5m – if I had to guess – even Aunty Bella sef. Stop hating.

    • Mal

      October 28, 2017 at 3:24 pm

so very true. Linda is actually doing well for herself. But the mo abudus and co. very broke! Mo does not own her house in Ikoyi and a lot of all the designer gear and gra gra is all Cross River State money. She literally blew the N3bn that Imoke gave her. So I agree with you, bad business woman. Davido and the rest better learn how to invest and save,

@james nobody said linda ikeji is poor and nobody is hating … all I said is like the rest she exaggerates her financial prowess and doesn’t tell the truth completely. If she is not a celebrity, why did this director guy bring her up in the first place? Leave story oga, linda ikeji is a businesswoman and a celebrity … the two are not mutually exclusive don jazy too may be worth over a $1million
Your linda ikeji once called nicki minaj broke because she rented a house lol she actually thought she was richer than nicki lmfao
@aceofspades cool down linda is rich lol
Just cool down, its a big social problem in nigeria rich poor middle class everybody overstates their earnings … with davido’s attitude, you will think he is puffy lol

There is a clear difference between old media and new media and Linda is riding the new media wave.Up until recently she did everything herself with close to no overheads(except we consider her lifestle, travels, shoes, bags and give aways).Old media however need a physical premises to operate,be it a tv ,satellite or a city people. The bigger their operations, the bigger the real estate they require and hence their constant debt. They hire reporters, pay for equipment that are not cheap, studio lights, mics, buses to convey correspondents, staff bus sometimes etc.I have heard the age old debate but Mo Abudu,John Momoh or our uncle at This Day cannot lay claim to the model that works for Linda Ikeji. Trust me,she is wealthy and will continue to be except her foray into other activities deplete her wealth.Encomium is gone and so is City People(why buy a weekly when you get hot gist hourly).Old media is dying but the ads revenue is basically stilllooking for an outlet and who gets it? Yep our beloved Linda and co.

@Mal pps use your head and logic. Brains were installed in humans for a reason

Mo Abudu does not have a batallion of at least 10 consistent mouths to feed (nuclear family sisters, brother and poor parents) who are all completely dependent on her.

She therefore does not need to buy a banana island ‘mansion’ to house hungry dependants.

linda ikeji is not rich ..she is wealthy…simple and short… she makes her money..only God and herself know( but I believe its hardwork and destiny ) but she get money…personally, linda ikeji is the only female celebrity that has genuine money from hard work and being smart..others na oloshos in sheep for the males..davido can get away with it bcos his father is billionaire himself…psquare , don jazzy get money….my favorite na olamide (the guy just dey him own lane dey hustle and he is comfortable)…wizkid is the most overated musician ever in Nigeria..everything about him is hype and fake… he looks like someone that will get 50 million and by the time everybody from top managers ,executives and co finish taking from it, he will be left with just one million..others na wash

I concur! Some of them get body but no engine. Instead of them to dialogue with the Government when they are closer to them to create a platform for futuristic gain, so that they can get royalties when they are feeble, they would rather use that opportunity to fight for their pocket. When the problem arises, it’s masses that will still come to their rescue.

This is totally ridiculous and unnecessary! I don’t see why someone’s struggle gives another joy or boasts their confidence. I can’t believe the number of people concuring to this crass stupidity. Our celebriities being broke in a booming entertainment industry that caters to not only it’s countries huge population but that of other African countries, is indicative of what a failed nation we are. We should be very, very, super ashamed that one of our best producers ever, who has given us hits after hits over the years, probably can’t afford a house to buy a house of his own and not cheer this ridiculousness.

I like that some of you people underestimate Linda and that’s why she’s not bothered but letting her results speak for her. In one of her talk sessions with young women like me at Surulere last year, she gave us a little insight of how she’s paid. She told us that on her blog she was gets at least 50million clicks a day.. per 1 million click brings about $3k.. this is not even money she gets for sponsored ads on her page…so go figure. Linda is rich!!!

    • Neil Strauss

      October 28, 2017 at 4:47 pm

It’s not just basic clicks, it’s clicks on ads that brings money, visiting a website doesn’t bring money unless I click on an advertisement on the website……just maybe some of these stories are a bit exaggerated

      October 29, 2017 at 12:58 am

I am glad that you are actually the one who has a better incite as to how linda makes money. I took an online wealth training in nigeria before leaving for the united state about twelve years ago. I do not know why many people still do not understand how linda is making her money in this internet age. Linda’s money comes more from google monthly. through Adsense and clicks linda gets about $4,000 daily. And may i say that she does not need to touch her computer again forever to be getting this money every day. all of this has been set up over the past 7yrs. linda’s money is not in anyway mystery. what linda makes from ads from companies every month is less than 20million. Her source of income is majorly google. I learnt that she has invested heavily in real estate. As long as google is still functioning as a company and the internet has not stop functioning in nigeria, and people keep visiting her website……the money would keep rolling in. Watch those young americans making $5million yearly on youtube without selling anything
All linda wants is for people to visit her website and click on any ads…….This is one of the major reason she started hosting the self made conference. Although linda is wealthy….but her bigger success is coming in the next few years when many more nigerians would have connected to the internet.

    Guys, Linda Ikeji is rich,

I worked with the biggest Agency in West Africa before becoming a marketing manager myself and from my Agency alone, the amount she got from our campaigns were massive.

And please, she didn’t inflate ads for politicians, get rates are standard and there for everyone to see. Except you’re saying politicians gave her money to skew opinions in their favor. I cannot say if this was done but that is not a crime. She’s an online/ social influencer and it’s a standard practice besides she wasn’t the only online influencer used. I haven’t seen her bank account but if the babe is smart, she’s balling.

I’m a bit bothered about this write up though, why should a person’s confidence be boosted because others are not as rich as they thought? It’s a sad way to live. People should learn to give unconditional love to themselves, be content, mind their own buisness and walk their own path.

    A question:
Does having several deals (brand ambassador duties) not equate to being rich? Cos I know he has a deal with Mtn, Samsung, Ciroc, and recently he got featured in a Coca Cola ad too.
