Girls Love Tech is a nonprofit organization that aims to educate, build, and support outstanding females to become leaders in technology is offering free technology education programs for unemployed females.
The growth of technology in Africa is glaring, yet women are being left behind in terms of awareness, education, and opportunities.
According to Disrupt African Tech Startups Funding Report 2016, African tech startups raised up to $129m in funding, which was 16.8% more than was raised in 2015. Yet, females represent less than 11% of the African technology workforce.
Girls Love Tech believes that it can tackle this gender gap problem that exists in an industry filled with numerous opportunities, by offering free technology education and career building services to females with high potential to become industry leaders.
The organization has created a weekend-only program, designed to source unemployed graduate females, train them, and place them in active employment, upon successful completion.
Your level of technical knowledge may vary from beginner to advanced, as long as you have a strong enough interest in technology to be able to commit to being employed for a role in the industry.
As there is guaranteed employment Aella Credit, Travelbeta, 200ok Solutions and Intelia have partnered with Girls Love Tech on this initiative.
There is no age limit, as long as the individual is a graduate or on an equivalent level.
This program consists of four steps:
The assessment is online: You can access the form here.
Career Mapping: If a candidate has been successfully screened, and exhibits high potential to be successful in the companies/roles outlined, they have a one-on-one session with an industry expert to discuss possible career options and map out their training schedule accordingly.
Training: All technical courses are fully online, so that candidates can access them remotely. They are paired with an instructor who they can reach for coaching and questions. At different points during the training, there are group classes held offline, in the locations Workstation, VI and Travelbeta, Ikeja. These are all on weekends to ensure availability.
Employment: Having completed the training (15 – 16 weeks), candidates are matched to technology companies. If interested, they become GLT ambassadors to help train and teach new incoming candidates.
