Tennis umpires are reportedly considering a boycott of matches involving Serena Williams after her outburst in the US Open final against Naomi Osaka.

Serena had received a warning, a point penalty, and finally, a game penalty after an outburst that saw her call the umpire Carlos Ramos a thief.

Although the International Tennis Federation (ITF) had come to Ramos’ defense, saying that his “decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules,” the umpires are according to The Times considering to boycott future Serena Williams matches.

This is said to be because the CEO of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), Steve Simon, and the U.S. Tennis Association President Katrina Adams, had released statements in support of Serena.

The umpires feel that Ramos was “thrown to the wolves for simply doing his job and was not willing to be abused for it.”

According to “a senior figure” who spoke to Guardian:

There is a lot of unhappiness in the umpiring community because no one is standing up for officials. Umpires keep asking: ‘What if it was me in that chair on Saturday?’ There is a widespread feeling that Carlos was hung out to dry for nearly 48 hours and that no one is standing up for officials.

Behaved like a petulant kid, threw her toys then blame sexism. I disagree with these rule preventing people from being expressive of their emotions; but rules are rules.

Lol what a double standard and lowly contradiction in your statement Jokolaba! You disagree with rules preventing people from being expressive but you also take aim at how she expressed herself. We see sportsmen expressing themselves in similar ways in football, basketball, tennis and pretty much every sport.

Fun Fact (Not so fun btw) : There has been similar cases in men’s tennis with even worse behavior that went unchecked and without similar uproar. Umpires didn’t seem to want to boycott said players. Regardless of how you slice it there are undertones of sexism and racism in this story. Novak Djocovik’s broken his racket plenty times,Benoit Paire,an UMPIRE – Mohammed Lyani stepped off his chair to ”encourage” Nick Kirgios during a game!! Just please!

Contradiction? I don’t think so. I only have the dexterity to hold two discrete opinions in mind at the same time. I don’t like to have my seat belt on all the time for example but it doesn’t mean I have to flout the rule. Carlos Ramos has a reputation for being a stickler to rules and rigid in his interpretation. He has issued code violations to top male players such as Djokovic and Murray in the past. How does issuing code violation to a female then translate into evidence for sexism? There could be sexism in tennis but this would be a poor example.

They need these rules because some people can’t be trusted to control themselves whilst expressing their emotions.

Even with the rule in place..you see how some still can’t caution themselves.

These white people don’t ever forgive and Serena knows if she does not refute the cheating claims it will be alluded that she won all her trophies by cheating and not through hardworking and determination like some are already saying on social media. I don’t know why her coach did what he did in such a high profile match knowing it could cost Serena her 24th grand slam. He claimed that Naomi’s coach was coaching too, but the umpire chose to pick on him only and Serena had to pay for his sins.
People are claiming she was loosing and lost her cool. But i don’t think Serena is afraid of loosing, she just want to loose gallantly on a fair and just court.
Its on record that even in matches where coaching is allowed, she has never taken advantage of the option to be coached while game is on cos according to her you have limited time to make decisions on the court and coaching can distract you..
I think those code violations issued to her really distracted her cos the Serena I know can come from low points to win her game as she was doing well during the 2nd set. But perhaps they don’t want her to add the 24 grand slam trophy to her titles.. I believe her reaction came from accumulated pains she has suffered in her career like racism, body shaming and discrimination.
The impact of Ramos’ action will come to light in future when these whites are tired of Naomi Osaka too, I fear they will remind her how they manipulated Serena to steal points and a game from her in favour of Naomi to enable her win the US Open grand slam.
But my girl will be back in 2019 with fire.
