See How Everyone is Reacting to Alleged Proposal to Replace Nigeria’s Name with United Africans Republic (UAR)

The Nigerian National Assembly has reportedly received a proposal to change the country’s name from Nigeria to the United Africans Republic (UAR).

According to The Cable, the proposal was submitted to the committee by Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant in Lagos state on Wednesday.

Adeleye’s reason for proposing this change is because the name “was not coined by a citizen but given to the country by Flora Shaw, wife of Lord Lugard, a colonialist.” He also believes it will promote peace and unity in the country,” The Cable reports.

Read the proposal below:

First and foremost, I want to recommend a name change from Nigeria to the United Africans Republic (UAR).

The significance of name change cannot be overemphasised. Even God our father, in the Holy books, changed names of prophets e.g. Saul to Paul, Jacob to Israel, etc. The reason for name change is to physically and psychologically reflect a new beginning.

Thus, at this crossroads in our history, it is mandatory that we change our name to reflect a new beginning which will be ushered in with a new constitution. The word ‘Africa’ is a Greek word meaning ‘Without Cold’. Africa was originally called ‘Alkebulan’, meaning ‘Mother of Mankind’ (Garden of Eden).

Alkebulan is the oldest and the only word of indigenous origin used by Moors, Nubians and Ethiopians. So, if we like, we can go a step further and name our nation, United Alkebulan Republic (meaning ‘United Mother of Mankind Republic).

The new constitution should also give room for continuous review as and when due, and future referendum if required also want to suggest the following.

The constitution should provide for a council for each of these offices where six members from each geo-political zone will be represented to take collective unanimous decisions for the office, instead of one man holding all the powers of the office.

These council members will attain the position by seniority and numbers of years in service, and they will each need a department in the service as well as being council members.

Nigerians have since taken to social media to express their opinions concerning the proposal and here’s how everyone is reacting:

To my own point of view in this situation, I would love we the Nigerians to give head and attentions to the top head leaders this time and see what’s this sudden change of this name will bring to Nigeria 🇳🇬 if it’s good or bad to add in Nigeria problem.
According to me we all Nigeria’s have been suffered for long and times, even some of us have been suffered since right from when we where being given birth to. So what’s there for us not bear now and give the leaders a chance on this proposal and see what change it might looks like or be to we the Nigerians.
If I where all Nigerians I’ll give the leaders a chance once more on this proposal and see how it works and benefit us all…

Mr Tax man. Naira don tire you to collect abi. Now you dey find another currency make you want collect as tax man. For still this same Nigeria.

Has you school reach sense no dey your head but under your feet and ass. That’s why when you stand you don’t think well neither when you sit with your ass.

I’m really ashamed of this Mr Tax man for Lagos. Simple thing to fix A great lovely nation Nigeria is infrastructure. All the Tax money you’ve collected since the past years in office if you can use it to put one infrastructure into place to be working you won’t think of changing the name of the Nation. You could have changed your names instead of the country name. Bloody civilians and you called yourself civilized human.

We should not work on changing the name Nigeria, we should work on changing our governance.
The name Nigeria is a perfect name..
Does changing the name Nigeria bring Security? Or does changing the name gives us light and road??

What were they even thinking that brought about the discussion of changing the name Nigeria
    Does that stop insecurities??

The problem to Nigeria is leadership, which means chief servant, in Nigeria, chief servant operate as ruler of the people.

President Buhari should humble himself, and give an executive order for true Federalism to take place and allow all state to have their state police.

Then in the case of the military Interventions in internal crisis, he should make it a mandatory to send only indigenious army and police to their own state of origen to help comb out and calm the insecurities in their own way than sending non indigenous army and police to places that they know nothing about, and this non indigenous military men end up abusing and assaulting the indigens when sent on a peaceful Interventions.

Not every improvisation worth approval. There is nothing with the name Nigeria as a name, the only problem is Nigerians not Nigeria. Our focus should be on changing our lives not our name…. I like the name Nigeria pass Untied….. regardless of who gave the name

Names are characters or identity of an individual.your name is your future blessings.your negative name can ruine your destiny.when God wanted to bless Abraham, jacob,he first change their names.if you want change, first consider the name

Changing Nigeria’s name to what is that again UAR?! Is just a waste of time cause it just like a restaurant serving bad food and later changing its name to attract costomers with the same bad food… What a waste, if they want nigeria to be great, give the youths a chance at politics!

I really like some things about the name,
and I really appreciate learning the meanings/histories of Africa and Alkebulan. Thank you to the person who wrote the proposal.

I’m sure if the proposal comes up again at a better time, people would be interested in the “baptism” / rechristening / what to call it. What is a republic? I actually have to read that up – federations, republics, etc.

I don’t know how to lift up the old brand again, and I guess as a words person I saw this headline and thought the responses would be full of praise for the idea, looool.
