ARISE Made in Africa – Spring 2012: Jewel by Lisa presents “Vintage Love”

Photography by J.D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere depicting Nigerian life specifically the stylish and vibrant swinging ’60s in Nigeria inspired designer Lisa Folawiyo and her team to create “Vintage Love“, the Spring 2012 Jewel by Lisa collection presented at the ARISE Made in Africa Collective Show in New York.
The intro to the collection featured the various snapshots, a throwback to a time when Nigeria was a young nation discovering its identity after the end of the colonialist era. The collection began with Austrian Lace layered with ankara, we were also introduced to the re-imagined Fila. Last season, everyone was tumbling over the turbans, will the fila catch on for Spring 2012? JBL certainly presented a compelling case for that as this accessory accentuated various looks in the collection including shorts and dresses.
The watercolour print silk dresses presented in this collection are certainly set to be a runaway commercial success. These pieces were deliciously lady-like yet young and fresh. The show ended with JBL’s staple, wax print/ankara presented as separates and dresses. The menswear inspiration shone through here, photos might not depict the shimmer and texture of these pieces but as we watched the show live, we saw the embellishments shimmer seductively in the light as the models moved.
This collection saw Jewel by Lisa continue their transition from a fashion label to a fashion brand. Their accessories including the fila and the large embellished clutch bags then the inclusion of a body suit (Perhaps, a preview of JBL swimwear) made a splash. Prior to the show, the JBL buzz was at an all-time high, after the show, it is clear that this buzz is well deserved.

nice collection
Wow… I LOVE this collection, the prints are to die for.
I love, I love, I love!. Really impressed. Beautiful
proud of her. love her designs even if one or two looks a bit boring but all in all her stuffs looks fab and gorgeous.
the print that Lisa is wearing is lovely, but a tad boring this collection. the vava voom normally associated with JBL is just not there. There wee just 4 pieces that did the trick and no, the fila is certainly not as attractive as the turban and won’t be adorning our heads. Lisa should have worn one if to give it her stamp of approval, lol
Good combo I must say,impressive

Am not a fan of “designers” but i must confess I LOVE ALL D DESIGNS BY THIS LADY”..kip it op,its all so wearable, d colours are just rite and every style is a show stopper.

Extreme nice
Jeannette took the words right out of my mouth, some of the prints were brilliant but some were just all over the place, overall an okay collection
IMPECCABLE!!!
Nice .
Also follow us on twitter @fashionbrief.
like the collection themes VINTAGE dont expect over the top designs and cuts…its ol centred around understated glam and she got it on point….love it
Neat is the word. Thumps JBL. U doing us proud.
nice, very consistent theme all through, and delectable prints!
a lot of hype before the event and such an anticlimax. Just the last few outfits cut it. Nothing exciting. rather disappointed! Serz, what was she thinking trying to make d male yoruba cap a fashion statement. stick with embellishing i say.
Have to agree with you on this. It was definitely overhyped, which made me expect far too much than it delivered. A strong collection, but not enough.
I love love love love love love her collections go gurl
Lisa always does it for me and boy she did it again…..i lovee dis collection
the prints again this season are amazing!!!! They are designed by the talented Banke Kuku!!

This collection is fabulous and fantastic! Indeed, a perfect expression of vintage love! Kudos!!! Made from Africa products are really amazing, may it be clothes or even African Bags. I just love them!
I am impressed with this collection. I personally love the color and the vintage style made with modern touch. I think clothes made in Africa are really beautiful just like Africa Bags which has great colors and styles too.
The point is, Lisa has really set herself apart from the crowd and as far as I am concerned, she’s the only one at the moment who can have international appeal!
Have to agree that this “collection”, doesn’t reflect JBL truly. Perhaps the throwback to old naija glamour went awry somewhat.
She tailors well though(if that’s a consideration) and her prints are always vibey and vibrant.
Have 2 dresses (sadly) from some older collection and this is way understated, in terms of style for me.
She’s one to keep an eye on though and confident she’s growing a strong brand. Good job Lisa.
I love jewel by lisa but I wasn’t so impressed wif dis collection. It didn’t woow me
no. vintage? maybe the first few unattractive, rather unwearable pieces and then towards the end, she zips into the 21st century? I used to be a fan of JBL, she’s clearly looking for a signature look and she needs to do that outside of fashion shows. blinging ankara is not enough, then keep it simple and stop trying to do quirky. Take a lef from VB who you clearly look up to and do clean lines. You are trying to hard JBL, not in a good way love
Faboulous!! Like the positive buzz she helps throwing on Nigeria. Surely makes it easier to deliver the story. Also no doubt the designer herself and her youthfulness sell the brand. Period!
Nice collection! I am proud of you Lisa.
VERY NICE COLLECTION………………………..HOPING TO SEE MORE.
JBL toh bad! never fails to deliver.
nice collection lovely bright prints…that fila would have made it if it was sloppily thrown back on the head likes those pretty boy hats tho..#just saying#
