Designer Aisha Obuobi of Christie Brown exemplifies the new crop of style and business savvy Ghanaian entrepreneurs.
Aisha’s label Christie Brown has a strong following in Ghana and has received accolades including awards and major magazine features from Johannesburg to Milan.
On the 1st of February 2012, Aisha opened the doors of “1st Osu Lane” – the new home of Christie Brown!

Real copycats…a lot of concepts stolen from naija designers JBL, Ituen basi and tiffany amber, however her finishing looks good tho…welldone christie.

ok, so i took the pains in actually looking at JBL, Ituen basi and tiffany amber designs and i dont see any copying at all….all four designs are totally diffrent. the only resemblance i see is that all designers are celebrating african prints. Christie Brown is really unique and i love it!!! and pls dont u make that mistake of comparing nija designers to gh desiners…..nija doesnt come close at all….u r just overratted!!!!!

Ankara is the trend of the moment and most African designers are running with it.It’s how well its sewn, the uniqueness of the style and of course the all-important details and finishing that makes all the difference and I think Christie Brown ticks all the boxes. Well done Aisha! Good to see my effortlessly beautiful Ghanaian sistas looking so fab on the red carpet. GH rocks!

. Btw Ghanaians were light years ahead of us in using ankara in contemporary ways. Im Nigerian. My mom used to make her ankara jackets in Accra when it was still a fabric relegated to “up and down” over here.
Ghana is slowly but surely coming up and very soon will be contending with the rest of the world in the fashion industry.. The upcoming Ghana Fashion week to take place late autumn will have the world setting their eyes on Ghana. There is alot of talent in Ghana….just watch the space.

I can actually see the vision behind the designs of christie brown! these pieces are very unique, you just have to have an awesome sense of style to make the looks classy, not too many accessories, cus the clothes are already accessorized ! the only thing i cannot stand is the booton necklaces :/ lol, everything else is a yes to me

Exactly! Nothing new under the sun. Whilst I don’t really care for the loud, bright, colourful/clashing patterns that seem to be the hallmark of her brand, I admit her styling is on point! Oh and can we have full length photos of a dress?

Dis is nuffin close to JBL.styles like dis has bin made years back. Its just d way we all translate our individual designs. Nigerians lik to say crap all the time. I’m a Nigerian and a designer. There is a problem with fashion in Africa! Designers have no integrity and are not ashamed to blatantly copy each other!!!!There is so much of Ituen Basi in Christie’s collection, not good!!!
If some of you say she has copied then it is in fact a nod in the right direction to the designers you mention she is by far younger than Ituen Basi but can stand with her. You must give credit where it is due Aisha Obuobi is incredibly talented!! Her attention to detail is impeccable. Please give her her a pat on the back. Aisha, kuishe!!Ayekoo!!!

I am a bit underwhelmed to be honest. I eagerly clicked on the post, excited to see CB designs cos I have heard such good things about her designs and lo and behold I saw dresses and pieces that can be found anywhere and are actually staple pieces at most sale events. Even “Talior-Lo-Ran” now makes theses ankara button neck-pieces. That said, I love the outfits worn by the ladies in the last picture – Baaba Banda and Jihane. For those feisty Ghanaian ladies protecting their own, it’s okay. But remember that there is a place for constructive criticism and it can only make CB better, so no need to take it personal. Any opinion expressed here is just that – an opinion. You can choose to let it break you, make you or have no impact whatsoever. It is your choice at the end of the day.
Good luck to you CB and will definitely take time out to visit your store when I am in Accra.
PS: when did definitely change to definately? I have noticed a lot of people misspelling that word and I am wondering if the spelling changed and I somehow missed it?

I don’t see JBL or Ituen Basi, I just see another great designer working with African (ankara) print. People talking about “tailor-lo-ran”, I think you should focus on the quality and finishing of her pieces. We should all commend her for doing well, and creating a great brand and lots of jobs in Ghana. Why is everyone saying jbl though???? I don’t see any JBL-esque embellishment anywhere :S

I must say the neck pieces and all are “inspired” by Ituen Basi, thats pretty obvious. But stating that does not take away from her talent……..Its not a Nigerian, Ghana issue, why do people like to ferment trouble unnecessarily.

I seriously take offence to the comment abou Nigerians not being the ones to copy. Ghanaians in all spheres…music, fashion, banking all the way to the negatives like our politics look to Nigerians and copy us…I have lived in Accra and Ghanaian ladies would rather date a Nigerian man…why? Nigerians ooze confidence! That said and with no intent of playing down Ghanaians, I love Christie Brown and Ghanaians and their simple approach to life…GH and NAIJA rocks! We are still cut from the same cloth!

Bella Naija keep up the great work, I’ve been reading your posts for years and it is always a joy to visit you site.
If I may be so bold may I say… I think it is sad that as black people we are already so divided as it is but still find varying countries sniping at each other. Why can’t Ghanaians and Nigerians ever get along? Why must there be constant debate against each other on every social media site with reference to Ghana or Nigeria?
We all claim to believe in God whatever our religion. Yet in our religions we are taught we are one. If this is so, how is this constant trying to make one party seem less than the other right before God? Why are Ghanaians constantly taking snipes at Nigerians and Nigerians at Ghanaians?
I’m of Ghanaian heritage but have lived in Nigeria and other West African countries and see both the good and flaws in each country. Ghana can learn from Nigeria in a lot of things and Nigeria can learn from Ghana in other things. Both Countries could learn from each other.
I have lived most my life in the UK and the kind of racism (my brother was killed in a racist act) I have dealt with makes me incredibly sad to see to West African nations constantly at a war of words all over the net.
I look forward to the day that we see ourselves us brothers and sisters. Africa, particularly West Africa has so many issues that we will only see to if we come together. The amount of good that we could do if we came together instead of sniped at each other constantly (to the point that even non West Africans sit back and laugh at us ) could be of benefit. Afterall we have the same issues at hand in our countries, same need for development, less corruption, more job employment etc
I long for a day when will we see each other for what we are and realize the potential we could have if we could ever come together or at least see each other as cut from same cloth and not adversaries.
