The countdown to the 7th edition of The Future Awards set to take place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State from Saturday 25th August 2012 – Sunday 26th August 2012, is officially on!

The Central Working Committee for The Future Awards has unveiled the shortlist of 5 individuals for each category for the award show. Speaking on the award, the executive director of The Future Project, Chude Jideonwo said “It’s as usual, been an intense 8 weeks. After the nominations, there was the process of administering nomination forms, where we also interviewed the nominees, secured references, conducted independent research and held random inspections of books, finances and more. We also got evidence of all the nominees’ ages and had a two-week period for any complaints from the public. Simultaneous with voting, the Board of Judges – 30 young media influencers from across the country – sat for a full day and produced the shortlist, which goes to the Independent Audit Committee. The names will then return to the Board of Judges who will choose the final winners.”

Speaking more on the shortlisted nominees, he said, ”Sadly, many nominees did not fill their forms, perhaps assuming – despite emphasis to the contrary – that voting alone would progress them to the next stage. Many of those nominees, without publicly verifiable information, lost out when they got to the judges table. The awards insist on the highest standards of transparency and while the process can be tedious and time-consuming for the nominees, it is an ultimately rewarding exercise and crucial to choose the very best.”

Members of the Independent Audit Committee include TV host Mo Abudu, external relations director of the Nigeria LNG, Siene Alwell-Brown, politician Jimi Agbaje, Stanbic IBTC director Yemi Osindero, LEAP Africa founder Ndidi Nwuneli and many more.

All the finalists and winners of each category will be unveiled at The Future Awards 2012 this weekend. Chairman of Heirs Holdings and the Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony Elumelu has been announced as the keynote speaker.

You can watch the award show live on Sunday 26th August 2012 by 2 PM on www.YNaija.com/TheFutureAwards

    • sparkz August 22, 2012 at 8:22 PM

Good 1…..Toke Makinwa’s name ke! wat category wil she fall into na….moreover her life is an open book so no ojoro!

    • Temilola August 22, 2012 at 10:40 PM

Congratulations to all the shortlisted nominees! It’s not easy getting out there and doing something commendable in any established industry in Nigeria.
Side note: Annie & Nina, I doubt Toolz would be recognized in this category again if all she had to offer was her hips, I’ve listened to both Toolz & Toke and they are both interesting and entertaining ladies. For your benefit, I hope that there’ll be some award that recognizes miserable people like you that just comment without sense on blogs as a way to escape their unaccomplished lives.
Lastly, *raised eyebrow* at Linda Ikeji….I have a 13 year old daughter and I have stopped her going on certain Nigerian blogs/sites especially Linda’s & Ladun’s…. The hateful comments there are really excessive, and should be vetted carefully. Nevertheless Linda has managed to turn her blog into a lucrative business, so well done to her for that.
Davido nominated in 2 categories?? Ok

      • Annie August 23, 2012 at 1:03 AM

And hope u’ve been recognized for doing PR for toolz nd stopping ur 13year old daughter or sister frm visitin certain blogs.Learn to respect pple’s opinion nd if u wama disgaree u do so normally.I hope u get an award for this essay u have here atleast u accomplished sumtn writing note on BN nonsense.

    • name August 22, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Irrespective of how popular a tabloid blog/er is I can never look up/appreciate the owner. I have been struggling to find at least a decent position to rate the future awards. But now seeing linda ikeji as a top nominee is just appalling. Now I know just how low to rate the future awards. smh

      • iLife August 23, 2012 at 10:09 AM

Linda Ikeji has as much right to be on the list as all those people there – all sentiments aside. Who are these nominees? What is the purpose of this awards show? Who is it inspiring? I mean you see people working with companies – for example HP, Banwo & Ighodalo..wtf? What kind of yeye inspirational awards show is this. I agree with whoever said this is a popularity contest. #whatajoke

    • Bewi August 23, 2012 at 1:39 AM

That corporate category is one that makes it obvious that this is a popularity contest. Why on earth will the organizers expect the public to vote for individuals excelling at their various jobs? They are not living their daily work lives in front of the public neither have they influenced the public with their positions. Their co workers nominate them and then they expect the youths of Nigeria to vote?Based on what? How do we even vote when we cannot judge their work ethics and abilities? #justmyopinion

      • bukky August 23, 2012 at 7:41 PM

Thank you very much, I though i was the only one who thought that category was absurd. It is like voting for the best father and mother in Nigeria, the only people that can attest to their parenting skills will be their children and those close to them. In this same vein, you cannot expect people to accurately vote for people they do not work with. This category lacks credibility and makes the award in it’s entirety a tad bit silly.I hope the organizers read this and dont get defensive but use it as a way to make this award more valid.

        • bukky August 23, 2012 at 8:21 PM

and oh, excellence in public service is another preposterous award category!

    • remi August 23, 2012 at 9:14 AM

Like most things youthful, this FUTURE award is a mess of misguided youthful energy. They have all the support and resources they can get and they waste it on rewarding their friends with no tangible talent besides being famous faces. In a world where the likes of Wana(just using her as an example) are not properly celebrated (because they lack ‘the look’,) you see the likes of Toke and Toolz being celebrated like they have done anything special besides their endowment, accent and colour of their skin. Like Eldee will say, this Future award na wash wasah!!
I know this post will not see the light of the day,but my conscience is made clearer by writing it. God dey and he is watching us all in 3D.

      • Tosin August 23, 2012 at 6:13 PM

Participate, nominate…I think that will help.

    • iLife August 23, 2012 at 10:05 AM

Ok this is a joke. When these future Nigeria guys started, they seemed reasonable. They brought their #enoughisenough campaign and I bought it. I think they meant well but they seem to have lost their way. Chude and co , I hope you are reading this. This awards ceremeony business is RUBBISH. Excellence in Public Service? What is the criteria? For being given such a position at a young age or because they are making a difference in their organisations? Corporate category for what? People that have fancy job titles? Musician of the year abi na Entertainer? Aren’t the other awards ceremonies enough? Who is sponsoring this awards show? Elumelu is a keynote speaker – ehen so? If this is the so called Future of Nigeria I weep. Instead of making this government accountable and putting more impactful programmes in place, you are organising yet another awards show and trying to help some people massage their already inflated egos….I don’t even know where to start from. If you can’t see that this is a waste of space and time then truly the future of Nigeria will be its downfall.

      • remi August 23, 2012 at 10:41 AM

You’ll soon be termed a hater.
        Watch this space.

    • itsekiri's finest August 23, 2012 at 12:56 PM

    • gloria August 24, 2012 at 11:30 PM

    • gloria August 24, 2012 at 11:32 PM

I will vote for ini edo

    • SALSERA August 25, 2012 at 9:42 PM

Linda Ikeji is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy over 30, and if the age limit is thirty then whats going on
And these categories are weird – wtheck is Corporate?

    • Kay August 25, 2012 at 11:20 PM

Big ups to our queen Ini edo

    • Presentation Skills August 26, 2012 at 5:51 AM

While The Future Awards is a welcome idea, I still have my reservations on the criteria for selection (=”Nigerian Factor”). One cannot help but wonder where, when, why and how the shortlist was drafted and by what panel of judges.
