Straight From the Headlines! What Everyone Was Talking About This Week

Good evening dearest Bellanaijarians! It’s great to see you here once again this Friday as we recap major stories that made the headlines across the country this week.

It’s been an interesting week as usual. One of the trending topics this week was the return of the First Lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan, after spending some weeks in Germany. She was greeted with a lavish reception and has since remained silent on her reason for staying away for so long. She however denied speculations that she went to have a cosmetic surgery and tummy tuck done.

Here’s a summary of other news stories that made headlines this week.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has signed the death warrants of two prisoners on death row. The state’s Attorney General, Osagie Obayuwana, told Amnesty International that Mr. Oshiomhole signed the execution warrants two weeks ago following a request from prison authorities. Edo State prison authorities reportedly complained to the governor that death row inmates involved in a recent jailbreak incident had become “unmanageable.” Mr. Obayuwana explained that the two prisoners to be killed were convicted of murder, for which Nigeria’s laws prescribe the death penalty.

A high-profile member of the Boko Haram sect has been arrested in the home of a senator in Maiduguri, Borno state, according to a statement from the military task force. “A high-profile Boko Haram commander, one Shuaibu Mohammed Bama, who has been on the list of wanted terrorists … was arrested by task force troops in a serving senator’s house …,” the statement said of the arrest on Thursday. “He is in the custody of the (task force) and assisting in the investigation and has since made startling revelations.” In November 2011, Nigerian secret police said they had arrested an alleged Boko Haram spokesman with ties to Senator Aliyu Ndome.

Billionaire businessman and MD of Capital Oil and Gas Ltd, Mr Ifeanyi Uba has been released from the custody of the Special Fraud Unit after spending 10 days in their cell in Ikoyi. He was arrested on October 9th following accusations of fraud totaling N43billion from the Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede led Presidential Committee on Verification and Reconciliation of Fuel Subsidy Payments. The committee discovered gross abuse by many marketers and reported the case to the police. Mr Uba was released after he fulfilled his bail conditions.

The police have arrested a middle aged man, identified as Ben Ariwelo for allegedly defiling an 8 year old girl in Bayelsa State. Vanguard gathered that the incident occurred last week at the riverside town of Otuoke in Ogbia local government area of the state. It was gathered that the under aged girl said to be an imbecile was lured to a public toilet where the suspect had carnal knowledge of her. A neighbour who noticed the unusual movement around the public convenience reportedly raised an alarm which attracted other natives to the scene. The randy man according to witnesses was caught pants down by the community folks and handed to the police.

 The 13 suspects arrested in connection with the murder of four UNIPORT students have been charged before a Port Harcourt Magistrate on a five-count charge of conspiracy and murder and have been remanded in prison till the case comes up again in December. The Nigeria Police Force has also dismissed the policeman who was part of the mob that killed the students. The policeman has been identified as Lucky Orji.

Two Nigerian men, suspected of being part of a drug smuggling ring, were arrested with 500 grams of crystal methamphetamine, also known as ‘ice,’ valued at an estimated Bt1 million (about $33,300, N5.2 Million naira in Naira) in Thailand. Identified as Ahamefule Cosmos and Iriegbe Chinonso, the two Nigerian nationals were detained at a convenience store. Police took them to their apartment for further investigation and found 28 packages of crystal meth, weighing in total 500 grams valued at $33,300. The arrest followed the arrest of Thai national Polsingha Putthasri, who held 100 grams of ‘ice,’ saying he bought the illegal drug from a Nigerian drug syndicate.

Residents of Lagos have been warned to be wary of armed robbers who often disguise themselves as beggars. It was gathered that the men of the under world now disguise as beggars to snatch valuables from their unsuspecting victims. Their targets are often lone occupants of posh and exotic cars, they dispose them of their most expensive items ranging from laptops, phones, money and jewelries. The hoodlums, who usually operate between the hours of 5-9 pm are always armed to teeth with dangerous weapons such as knives and shotguns (carefully stuck in their dresses).
