The Borno Government, on Thursday said it would procure a recycling plant to convert the increasing waste generated in Maiduguri, to positive uses.

The General Manager, Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA), Alhaji Nasiru Surundi, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.

According to him, the plant will help to create wealth out of the huge refuse generated daily in the state capital.

On flooding, the general manager attributed its annual occurrence in some parts of Maiduguri to the “wrong attitude of residents to waste management”.

“Until the residents of the affected areas are ready to change their attitude towards waste disposal and management, flood will continue to chase them out of their homes every year.

“People here have an I-dont-care attitude to waste disposal, and as long as they have concluded that gutters were the right places to dump their refuse, we will be having floods whenever it rains,” he said.

He, however, agreed that the problem also had to do with the inability of the relevant authorities to upgrade the master plan of the city since 1967.

“They have a task before them to upgrade the old Maiduguri by ensuring that people comply with approved plans while building their houses by not obstructing free flow of water in the town.

“It is frustrating that everybody is hiding under the tag of insurgency to neglect their duties,” he said.

Surundi, therefore, urged the people to always secure their environment, to prevent outbreak of diseases such as malaria, cholera and typhoid.
