After months of anticipation, the wait is over! The official nominees list for the biggest awards spectacle on the continent is here. Soundcity Music Channel has unveiled the list of the nominees for this year’s Soundcity Music Video Awards.

Otherwise known as SMVA, the award seeks to reward exploits in music videos in and around the continent. Debuting in 2008, the Soundcity Music Video Awards is poised to push the envelope even further with the forthcoming SMVA 3.0, scheduled to hit in November this year, by expanding the nominees to cover the entire continent, making the SMVAs a truly African award. The SMVA remains the most prestigious, and most high-profile urban entertainment awards for the reward of the representation of songs for the screen.

The awards are aimed at recognizing and rewarding deserving artistes as well as directors and producers of music videos in and from the continent with an emphasis on creativity, innovation and interpretation of the concepts in song for the screen. The award ceremony slated to hold at the prestigious Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel, Lagos, Nigeria on the 20th of November 2010, will have all the glitz, glamour and over-all entertainment that is synonymous with Soundcity. The event will include performances from artistes in the continent and some international artistes as well. Also the event program will include “live Red carpet coverage”, artiste and video profile amongst others.

Categories of the awards cover every popular genre of music that is appreciated on the continent. It also rewards the producers, directors and who work behind the scenes to produce the videos that have put Africa on the global front. The categories include: ‘Best Male Video’, ‘Best Female Video’, ‘Best Choreography’, ‘Best Special Effects’, ‘Best Editing’, ‘Best Video’, ‘Best Collaboration in a Music Video’, ‘Discovery of the Year’, ‘Best Pop Video’, ‘Best R&B Video’, ‘Best Hip-hop Video’; plus regional awards for the Best acts from the West, East, South, and Central Africa.

2010 has been a good year for Banky W, and he would seek to crown the year in style with victories at this year’s SMVAs, having garnered seven nominations, including: ‘Best male Video’, ‘Best Video’, and ‘Best RnB’ video. ‘Mr. Capable’ is trailed by PSquare, who have the second highest number of nominations with nods in five award categories including: ‘Best Video’, and ‘Best Duo or Group’. Mozambique’s Dama Do Bling got nominations from the SMVA with four nods including: ‘Best Female Video’, and ‘Best Video’.

Endowed and Critical made it to the fresh video, what happened to Only Me by 2face Idibia and so so many other videos released during that same period? Is this just a way to give something to D’banj because he has done nothing to be in the award at all.

i dont really know much about nigeria awards but what i know is in the uk is that most nigerian videos we watch are made by a dude called clearance peters, but i think i Banky, psquare,Tuface and Terry tha rapman have been more relevant this year and they deserved to be honoured

    FRESH VIDEO??? CRITICAL??? Enough said…

I think the toughest category is the one for collaborations… I would love for any of the Nigerian contenders to win. No beef, I just haven’t heard the other one. Judging by the others, it’s probably very good as well. I sense the posthumous hype Da Grin has recieved might push a lot of awards his away sha… Let’s see…

WTF!!! I thought Safe by M.I is like 2 years old, what the hell is it doing there??? and for special effects or fresh or whatever, what happened to DIPP regardless of the fact that it’s an average song? come on SMVA? you call it the biggest award show in Africa (since when) and you have the dumbest nominations??

  16. Gosh!

    September 10, 2010 at 1:21 pm

Wande Coal- Who Born The Maga is the silliest video to have been churned out by MoHits and to think it was even nominated…. *spits real hard* Darey again??? Mr Endowed came out barely 3weeks ago! Instead of Implication, why not Only Me? Are these people thinking at all? Bumper to Bumper? Safe? What on earth are the organizers smoking?
    This is outright crap!

    September 10, 2010 at 1:42 pm

as in the nomination list is rubbish apart from Banky that deserved most of his ,why is soundcity trying to do African awards when your viewers are only Nigerians? (note soundcity only shows in NIgeria even on DSTV) .They just had to create a category for Dbanj ..BULLSH*T

  18. ayobami

    September 10, 2010 at 4:23 pm

Diz nomination is 5 outta 10 simply cos there is no Only me by 2face.

    September 10, 2010 at 4:52 pm

This just shows that this is another disorganized awards ceremony. Where are the guidelines? The grammys. the oscars, even Hip Hop World Awards in naija have guidelines. The guidelines basically state what videos are eligible for the awards that year…for example…Videos released between a certain period. SMVA should show us the guidelines! Ive been to their website……no guidelines….SMH

Goldie what? That chick that doesnt have musical talent? We know the secret of how she usually bribes Derenle and cooks for the whole soundcity house, so we arent suprised on how she got nominated. Soundcity is on Goldie’s payroll so dont be shocked if she wins.

And i wonder how come Waje or even Lami had no nominations, Kolo and Know were beautiful songs with beautiful videos, not Goldie, Eldee helped save that song of hers.

      November 10, 2010 at 10:14 pm

Ah-ah? How can a channel be on an up and coming singer’s payroll? If una no like am, na your opinion be dat but that statement basically made you seem….Anyways, Goldie hasn’t proved she’s a good singer but that video and the whole idea for the song was hot.

    September 11, 2010 at 10:49 pm

…..Oh my, like which Mallam or Aboki did they give to do the nominations?….After all the whole previews by the celebrities talking about SMVAs this was the best they could come up with, why should they put up a song that just came out like a month to this, if this how the Grammy was organized, Artistes would have calenders instead of blings to time when to release songs…..Anyway, Best Collaboration, Lay Away…Sarkodie….Way better…

    September 13, 2010 at 9:34 am

I wish one of u will just sit, sing, direct and produce a video for once then ill believe u can do it too. Do u think it is easy to just single out songs? This people always debate with alot of people before d songs r chosen, ya all wanna see this and that, here and there, some even say d station aint on Dstv world wide, who d hell cares? so far de deliver. Its obvious u r all juveniles, have u ever heard of the word Marketing Strategy? or d u think when the likes of MI and co where nominated oversea that it was by chance? How will all the foreigners come to our country if they are not invited or nominated, they are the ones that will spread a good word or two for naija. I hate it wen people think with their heart n not their head. U can as well all walk up to Soundcitys office and vehemently voice ya opinion. When they gave Beyounce n Jay all d awards, ya all sit ere n watched like Zombies.. cos u aint got a say there. Just cos u r inter-savvy now u feel ur words will mata. Naija i hail, All d Nominees well done… Soundcity We ve gat ya back all d way from Maiduguri ….
