Omotola the ICON! Nigerian Star listed on the 2013 Time Magazine 100 Most Influential People in the World List

Jay Z, Steven Spielberg, Lebron James, Kate Middleton, Barack Obama…OMOTOLA!

Nollywood Star Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has been named as an Icon on Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World list for 2013. Popularly referred to as Time 100, the list is divided into various sections – Titans, Pioneers, Leaders, Icons and Artists.

Actress, singer, philanthropist, 34
By Richard Corliss
The world’s most productive English-language film industry is not Hollywood but Nollywood. The teeming Nigerian cinema grinds out some 2,500 movies a year, mostly direct-to-DVD quickies mixing melodrama, music and an evangelical Christian spin. (Think Bollywood via Tyler Perry.) Employing a million Nigerians, Nollywood enthralls millions more who come for the thrills, the uplift and the artful agitations of Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde — the Queen of Nollywood.

Called OmoSexy by her fans, she has made 300 or so features, from the 1996 Mortal Inheritance to the 2010 superproduction Ijé, shot partly on location in Los Angeles. Married to an airline pilot she wed on a flight from Lagos to Benin, Jalade-Ekeinde brings a juggler’s grace to her roles as actress, singer, reality-show star, mother of four and philanthropist (the Omotola Youth Empowerment Programme).

Success hasn’t spoiled Africa’s most renowned leading lady. Rather than going Hollywood, Omotola wants to stay Nollywood.

Corliss is TIME’s movie critic

Omotola has been recognized as an Icon on the list. President of Malawi Joyce Banda was also recognized in the Leaders category.

Well done Omotola and more power to your elbows… Its good to see that we are getting the international recognition we deserve. Am not sure about the Hollywood stand though? But i guess instead of starting from the scratch, you need more daring roles right???

      April 18, 2013 at 7:25 pm

Go and find a corner to sleep!! Pls free ur self from denial. In any profession there are comparisons of talent and surely u cannot deny that Omotola and Genny will always need to be compared. They are playing the same sport on opposing teams and right now omosexy just scored a back bending goal in this soccer match. 1-0

    • Abana

      April 18, 2013 at 8:15 pm

The fact that you cannot make your point without telling me to find somewhere to sleep invalidates whatever you intend to say. I didn’t even read beyond that sentence. If you like take a 1000 page not pad and do a comparison between Genny and Omotola. Rubbish!

      April 18, 2013 at 5:55 pm

Genevieve has coveted some of the most precious awards in the world… so sorry to bust your bubbles but she’s not checking for Omotola one bit. Genevieve is the most famous actress in Africa, the highest paid in Nigeria and the most endorsed… so come again. You Omotola fans can’t even praise your “idol” without mentioning Genevieve lmao.

    • Shola

      April 18, 2013 at 7:30 pm

What dirty bubbles are u busting in vain. Plsssss explain to me how Genny is the most famous actress but isn’t on this time magazine list?? Oh ok she is #101 maybe next year.

    • bumbum

      April 18, 2013 at 9:17 pm

My dear, there are so many accolades to Omotola which Genevieve can’t boast of. Apart from being the best Actress in Africa which you mentioned she is, what else? When was the last time she even made a relevant appearance on the Nollywood scene except of course at social events which does little or nothing in showcasing one’s talent. Before an achievement can be bestowed upon a person, we really have to see proof that such a person truly deserves it.
Sorry to say, but Omotola has shown signs of responsibility and hardwork. Juggling both work life, Married life and Motherhood is not child’s play and However, cannot be paid for and she still tries to remain relevant in the society… These amongst other things gives her an egde over your goddess Genevieve. She has much more experience and she has bagged so many awards not just on the movie scene but also in her home front.
Genny of course still has a lot to learn. #noHomo

      April 18, 2013 at 6:31 pm

@Moi,if u dont know let me get u back on track ok,Omotola didn’t married at the age of 16 rather met her husband at that age n 2yrs later they got married,so 12+2=18 so next time please do ur research well before u start spreading false story, thinking that u know all, anyways congrats to my role model for a job well done, and please to y’all that comparing Gene and Omot i am asking u to STOP cause Gene knw’s very well that OmoT is her elder sister.

@ Naija Talk I never said anything negative so I am not sure what you are talking about. What I was trying to say is that I am personally sick and tired of the whole tribalistic issue. I just used Ibo vs Yoruba as an example because that is the slandering comparison I see most of the time. Can we all just get along.

    • BeHappy

      April 18, 2013 at 7:04 pm

Wow, how can somebody be this naive, geez i can’t deal. Who writes like this? Yoruba people influenced time magazine, haha. Time magazine is the shiznit, when it comes to this kind of stuff , even surpasses recognition by Oprah or Forbes. It is not influenced by anyone, this is not forbes magazine, and the time mag list is respected all over the world. Make your findings, google is your friend. The research is done and the stories compiled over a period of 1 year which may explain the age lapse. When last did Genevieve feature in any nollywood movie. Why i beleive that Genny has very great potential,in this kind of business you have to continue to stay relevant and reinvent yourself. That is why the list is redone every year.Genevieve nowadays is more popular for her apperances in social events than for her movies. Hate on Omotola all you want but you can’t knock her hussle. She continues to push and reinvent herself. People were mocking her when she did the reality show. See now, was the show not talked about in the time article? Genny has to wake up seriously, this is the digital age, her recognition in Oprah was so 2005.

Influence; ability to affect a place, thing or course of event with or without direct contact. To have made Times, I think that impact should have been felt widely. I know people will bash me for this, but I need to ask; does she meet this criteria? In what way? Am sorry o!, Omotola fan club, I beg to disagree. Yes it is a great thing, but we shouldn’t celebrate just for celebration sake. If we are talking Nollywood movies, yes she is popular. But has she changed the industry in any way, I can’t see any evidence of that. NGOs nko? Does anybody know anyone or know anybody who knows someone who has benefited in an impactfully way? Am not talking carton of Indomie and a piece of cloth. She’s done we’ll, you can’t take that away from her, but influential? I beg to disagree. Feel free to bash me for airing my view, I don talk my own 🙂

    • toyin

      April 18, 2013 at 6:00 pm

I completely agree with you on this one…but If I say something…people who say “you’re a hater”…its unfortunate…even renonwed columnists such as Kristoff recognize the list as somewhat vain this year…but oh well..Congratulations

    • lovetta

      April 18, 2013 at 7:38 pm

of course both of you are not only haters but ignorants! (AW) and TOYIN…
FIRST AND FOREMOST- am not going to talk about her influence in Africa if you don’t know how much, then your case is even more serious than i hope.
you asked if she she has influenced the world in any way? i laugh at your ignorance.
google is free but ill take the pain to educate you.
when people like you were still watching bollywood movies etc…Omotola became the first Nollywood actress to demand A million Naira ( still have that publication ,i think for the movie
Omotola and some of her colleagues known as G8 were banned for their influence on that same industry in 2005
Omotola has been one of the first actresses to move into the classy films like ije and has stayed there which shows commitment and focus.
Omotola in 2005 or 2006 was the only Nollywood actor i know that was picked by the World food programme. i remember she did a walk with Ellen sirleaf johnson immediately she came to power in Liberia.
Omotola is the only African actor ive seen that works actively wit]th Amnesty international. doing the maternal mortality fight in sierraleione, meeting with the president and his wife.(they succeeded).
omotola has actively run her own personal Ngo (oyep) since 2005 and even financed the 20 widow makeover was it last year?(that was featured on BN)
Omotola is the first African actress to work with Save the children Uk on their rewrite the future campaign.
Vain me may i add the 1st African celebrity to get 1million likes on facebook!yes thats big!big brother*Africa* just attained that and its their biggest advert!

Omotola sits down with world leaders and sec generals of coperations my dear….GOOGLE!

she is a silent achiever and obviously, the people who know her influence are not people who watch how many indomie and okin buscuits were taken to motherless babies home!
i know all these by just doing bait of research and you were not blinded by your hate would have known just a little.
i truly feel sorry for your type. Time magazine is not city people, encomium or even forbes.

    April 18, 2013 at 8:43 pm

Madam Lovetta, in what way has all you have said impacted the WORLD generally? How has that changed the course of WORLD events ? Yes you are right, it isn’t ecomuim or city people, it is TIME magazine, for that reason Omotola does not fit the criteria. It isn’t a popularity contest and yes I have done a ‘bait’ of research. As long as we continue to view the world through rose tinted lenses we will continue to see things the way we want to see them. Like I said she has worked hard, but influential? I still stand by my words.

    • lovetta

      April 18, 2013 at 10:32 pm

you are a lost case. you actually highlighted the “bait” wow, that says alot about the sort of person you are!you clearly are a frustrated individual looking through rose tinted glasses trying to find your way.
i sincerely hope you never do, and that you are never celebrated even though it could have been favour. i think you wont understand all ive written either ,lol youre probably looking for a misspell!

    April 18, 2013 at 11:15 pm

I am really tired of all this bickering about omotola’s age so I decided to visit Wikipedia. Please my people, can you explain why her age is not mentioned (could it be that controversial?). She apparently got married first in an Ikeja registry in 1996 (that would make her 15 years old and a minor!) The white wedding which was witnessed was in 2001, five years later. Not that it changes anything, and am really happy at all her achievements so far, but could she (or anyone else for that matter)just get the records straight for us? Omosexy,Kudos for this great feat and God bless Nigeria

Honestly this is a good news for omotola, Nigeria and Africa. The Nigerian movie industry has come to stay and the world should just accept that. Withe this news the gap between the Nigerian movie industry and the Ghanian movie industry widens. With the current quality movies coming out these days the best times are here I believe. Omotola has successfully closed the gap between her and Genevieve. The two actresses are truly the biggest in the industry and we are really excited that the are making Africa proud.

She got married at 18, and has been married for 16… Time magazine probably started that write up a few months back. Which makes sense, since she only just turned 35 recently. I can’t *smh* enough everytime I read pple’s comments on BN. We really need to learn to appreciate others’ efforts and hope/ pray/ work towards achiementssss in our on lives! God help us so

I could not resist it so I had to comment. @AW: it is not only when one changes the WHOLE world events that he/she is called an achiever so what Lovetta listed out sounds like achievements to me darling. It is ok for you to criticize someone, but downright bashing? now that’s another level. I am no great fan of Omotola, but when someone has done something worthy of praise, then you should swallow what it is you are trying to show and hand it to the person.

I dont understand the way we reason at times. We are talking about Time Magazine here o, not Ikebe-super. Its a BIG DEAL. At less than 40 years of age, Omotola has acheived world renown without being a govt official, politician, religious cleric or criminal. Please, put on your thinking cap – is this not worthy of acclaim? How many people will EVER achieve that in their lifetime?

Why cany we just root for this woman and be proud of her??? Why are we so blinded by envy and hatred. And who brought up Genevieve in this matter sef? Who is that narrow minded person? This is NOT about competition or comparison!!!

Cmon people! The woman has done incredibly well! She has gone beyond entertainment. She has social relevance, a balanced family life and a fantastic career too. Many people strive to get only one of these things right and they are still struggling get we can even appreciate someone who seems to have it all covered.

Abeg! I no get time for una bcos even if if I type from today till tmr, some pple just wont get it.

I celebrate you OmoT, very well deserved. Pls keep the fire burning. Am gonna work hard at making myself worthy of such recognition someday too. God bless.

PS – am not a fan or Omotola, Genevieve or whoever. I’m just a truth teller and I appreciate achievers when I see them

I am so happy for Omotola, but truth be told, most of the recognition our Nollywood celebs get is just propaganda. It’s never based on true facts or statistics. Has anyone ever looked into the highest grossing actor(tress), or whose films sell the most copies, even popularity polls. Nada. Someone being mentioned on Oprah is just someone with a good PR team. I love genny but she is not a versatile actress. Most of her recent films are just stereotype, good girl, victim, beautiful damsel, nothing challenging, not to mention the fact that she’s restricting herself to Hollywood collaborations. Of the two, Omotola may not be better but she’s more visible, she’s putting herself out there with meaningful ventures and not just public appearances with solange knowles or roberto cavalli.

Omotola shouldn’t rest on her oars with this accomplishment but should strive to be even better. Wish her all the best

Why can’t Nigerians learn to just be simply happy for another person? Why? How hard is it, your life must be really empty and sad for you not to see this as an achievement. Outsiders will praise what we cannot praise. This our need to compare is a big problem. Which is why politicians steal – (they must be seen bigger than the other person, their children must have a bigger wedding on BN), why some women sleep around with married men, why a single woman would make herself miserable because she is comparing herself to her married friends or her family is comparing her, why people will bribe to get a job etc. We always have to show the other person up, hence comparing. Both women have done very well for themselves. What have you done with your life that is worth mentioning? Who knows who you are? We don’t pit male actors against each other, so this is a female thing. Women, women, we are too busy fighting each other, comparing ourselves with each other to see the beauty and strength in diversity, to appreciate the efforts and successes of our gender, to lend each other a helping hand, and have each others backs in the time of trouble. I will rather take my chances with a guy which is why I have more male friends because we women ehn, the bile that lives within us poisons everything. Jealousy, Envy, Covetousness, Hate etc, women have it on lockdown. No Toke post this week that’s why. The sad people have not had something this week to spew out bile to, so Omotola is a target. Any woman doing something for herself is a target. Omotola Pele o, don’t worry I am right behind you. My name will be on the front page in a few years, I’m sure people like this whose lives have not moved on will also hate on me too.

I completely agree with you AW. Ignore everyone that feels otherwise, ignore the hateful comments.only miserable people try to run others down by trying to get their message across. I don’t know what’s wrong with Nigerians generally. Once you air your views contrary to popular ones you’re termed ‘hater’, why?don’t we have the freedom of expression again? As far as i’m concerned you were civil about your comment and that shouldn’t attract any hate for any reason whatsoever. Omotola has done well for herself by going this far. For those saying she’s more influential than Beyonce and co…are you serious?does the list state that it’s in order of importance? I know she’s popular here but I can’t say she’s popular all over the world. In any case, I doff my hat for her remaining married after all these years in the industry, and also for getting on this list.

  74. Keepingitreal

    April 19, 2013 at 1:05 pm

@Zero I quite agree with you. The one problem with Nigeria stars is the fact that they lie so much and Nigerian audience are so laid back and never questioning assumptions that they take anything dished at them. The same goes in our leadership sector. She has done well for herself but the age factor is such a lie. For once they got it right that she wedded in 1996 making her 17 as at the time she wedded and lets not forget that she had had her her daughter as at the time she wedded and debut in acting come on!…

    April 19, 2013 at 3:24 pm

@Keepingitreal do you have any proof to these lies, please oblige us. Save the nigerian people from lies. Especially this one.
I am equally as jobless as you to be commenting on this site at the minute, so I won’t be too critical on your state of mind.
But the fact is she is very successful at what she does, she and a bunch of other female celebrities out there ( Tiwa, Genevieve, Omawunmi etc) and age is quite irrelevant in that equation.
I believe she is truly 35, and 34 at the time the article was written and sent off for publishing (….for the ignorant comments referring to that) and my proof is She says so, simples!!

@ keeping it real- most of us think others are older when we have not achieved much and they seem to be our mate or even younger than us. I understand your predicament.
That I think does not change the FACT that Omotola is 35. Born 1978 , married 1996 at age 18, did her white wedding on a plane at age 23, has four kids, is an achiever and at 35 is one of the Most influential people of the World and The Queen of Nollywood.
Hoping you become known for something in this life too, congrats in advance.

emmm congrats “Omo Sexy” as she calls her self. I am really proud of her for making our country proud. That been said, I will always love Genevieve. For me, she paved the way for international recognition with her being mentioned on Oprah and making an appearance on CNN just to mention a few. Also, she is not always in your face making reality shows and what not, I also consider her a well disciplined actress that chooses her roles carefully so as not to give away too much of herself which I respect. comparism or no comparism Genevieve does it for me.

      April 19, 2013 at 11:53 pm

First off, ‘Omo sexy’ is a name that is called by her fans. That is not what she “calls” herself. Get it? Now, its good to that Genevieve does it for you.. but by saying “shes not always in your face making reality shows ” just shows how bitter you are, yes bitter! For a start how is Omo sexy “in you face”? She was approached to shoot a reality show and she did, not problem with that, not like she initiated the whole thing! And as you said Genny (who could be argued is more “in your face”) does it for you, so also Omotola does it for me and im fine with her doing reality shows thank you very much. Also, i do not believe for one moment Genny paved any way.. which way? A 5 sec mention on Opara? and is she the 1st nigerian to be featured on CNN? erm. And Genny dosent choose her role “carefully” thats just wrong! either producers have run out of challenging roles for her or she cant be bothered anymore! Like someone above said, most of her recent roles are what you would expect her to play with her eyes closed!! not good enough! Omotola at least tries to stretch herself. And, her role in Ije, though shorter than Gennys, was more challenging than any movie Genny did for the past 3 years or so.. If you want to congratulate her do it gracefully and walk! And stop pimping Genny as though shes better than OmoT, cos quite frankly, She aint. When genny does something good, (or maybe if) then people too would congratulate her.. This is OmoT’s time!

@ Keepingitreal and Zero isn’t it obvious that they information gathered for the article was before she tured 35 this year she was probably 34 at the time that they goot her information cause she recently turned 35. And whether she was mentioned. Before beyonce or not doesn’t mean anything cause they could have mentioned all the names in no specific order but still following the order of the 100 most influential people in the world. The fact that she made this list says a lot and whether you people understand it or not she still made the list and is going to be recognised for it on the 23 april this month in New York I just finished reading it on one the U.S websites she was mentioned under. Whether you guys recodnise it or not she still made the list and she will be travelling to New York and will be in the same room with Oprah, beyonce and the rest, so the point here is that she hass acheived so whether you people accept it or not she has been recodnised globally and the time magazine recognised that so say all you wwant to say she still is on the top 100 in the world and nothing you say no can remove her from that list cast the times has already been published all around the world. Secondly, you never heard of Oyep? That’s nobody’s fault but yours.
Comparing Angelina Jolie to omotola? When Angelina went to sierraleone how many people knew her? What results did she have? ( press) but because we have complex when our own is doing and getting same, the see finish mentality won’t allow us be grateful.
