Ebola: US says Nano-Silver Provided by Nigerian Scientist is a Pesticide

Yesterday, Thursday 14th August 2014, the Nigerian Minister of Health Onyebuchi Chukwu said that an unnamed Nigerian scientist provided an experimental drug to combat the Ebola virus.

At the press conference, Chukwu announced the latest development. He also said the product would be used to treat infected victims.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has aired concerns over the safety of the experimental drug.

Erica Jefferson, a spokeswoman for the chief U.S. regulatory body, said that she could not provide any information about the product. She also did not call it by its name.

According to Vanguard, it has been used as an antibacterial for centuries. Tiny silver particles known as nano-silver have controversially been incorporated into a variety of consumer products such as socks and bedding to help block odors caused by bacteria and mold.

Nano-Silver is being considered a pesticide by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It is also sold online as a dietary supplement, but Danish researchers claim it can penetrate and damage cells.

“Individuals promoting these unapproved and fraudulent products must take immediate action to correct or remove these claims or face potential FDA action” said the agency.

Ebola has claimed the lives of 1,069 persons so far in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria.

Well nanosilver works well against any viruses. But since it is so cheap and available everywhere, it would ruin the USA pharmaceutical world of revenue. USA have refused to give Nigerians an experimental drug, so why bother us with what they think when our own scientist recommends nanosilver? Let Nigerians decide their own faith… it has been a couple of years now I have been reading tons of material about nanosilver…. and I think it is the last resort against any outbreak of plague when you lack ideas on what to do, because it will certainly kill the pathogens. Compared to other drugs, it is even less toxic on the short-run.

I am not sure that WHO approved Nano Silver as an efficacious drug for ebola and US went as far as threatening anybody that has commended the drug with FDA actions in addition to their conclusion that the drug is a Pesticide. I must admit that FG was hasty in drawing conclusions on the drug without a thorough screening about the drugs inspite of all the pressure from the ebola outbreak. Meanwhile, nobody is an encyclopedia of knowledge. It is now let for the Nigerian scientist that discovered the drug and FG to prove the US wrong by going further to use the drugs on a confirmed victim of ebola to confirm its efficacy to the ebola virus. If not, I suggest that the use of the drugs should be put on hold for further investigation and confirmation.

Nano silver has been around for centuries. The FDA, in bed with Big Pharm, does not want anyone to use anything that is cheap, safe and effective. It would spoil there plan to vaccinate everyone on earth.

Hardly surprising as the drug is not originating from the US. Makes you wonder about the suggestion that people have posted on this site that US themselves fabricated the Ebola disease, then sweep in with curative drugs like the messiah, saving poor Africa yet again.

So, lets pray for more discoveries of drugs and cheap avaliable vaccine to be made. Stop these political noise, pray, pray for these scientists now

I am a chemist and i have carried out research on Silver nanoparticles. This would be my first time to comment on this blog and i had to because i have to shed light on some things. Firstly, let me start with the write up by bellanaija. I passive that the author of the write up for this news has constructed the write up in a way which reflects his/her view. Although, i may be wrong, i feel strongly about this point. This can be seen with the way the writer has mashed up two different informations, which are entirely separate and points at different directions. Considering, the ebola outbreak and the possible way to revive the infected quickly, the comments of the US food and drug administration should be given more concern at this point than that of the US environmental protection agency. The same consideration United States had made even when the Zmapp drug was approved to be used on patients without it been subjected to necessary forms of tests. Silver nano particles has a wide range use and its use is continually increasing by the day. the use of silver nano particles is not limited to pesticides or even in drugs or even as an antimicrobial. Nanoparticles are used even in cosmetics, one which might have even been used by the author of this write up that got me commenting in the first place. lolz thats on a lighter note. My point is that don’t let us throw the diamonds we have out of the window to obtain a quartz, just because its coming from the US. US wants to know what our scientist have so that they can use the idea if it brings prospect and develop on them. Discovery does not end or start in a place, its global. Though research in Africa might still be a little bit crude, it doesn’t mean it does not make discoveries. Some of our scientists have been outstanding with their research. an agency in US might just want to deride our efforts so that people wont even pay us attention.its like someone in the same business with another person, you try to deride his own goods and services even when you provide the same good and service with same quality. Anybody that reads the write up most likely would have been influenced by the information which might have not been a product of an objective source which any news disseminating medium should be. such person has been wrongly informed, which you owe him as you have presented yourself as a news source. I visit bellanaija almost everyday to get the juicy part of the day’s news and would love you guys to continue to improve. b4 i forget, would like bellanaija to promote more creativity and productivity of Nigeria than the consuming lifestyles our youth have opted for. Au voir

Our Nigerian scientists are full of hot air. They’re always putting out sensational stories in the press which mostly turn out to be hype. That’s why they’re not taken seriously. Our medical authorities are the same: instead of calling a spade a spade and telling us that even the best hospitals in Nigeria are at 20% or less of the standard they should be at, they’re always throwing around names of the University Hospitals as if they’re Johns Hopkins. Even with this isolation centre that’s been put up at Yaba, they should be blatantly honest and say openly that it is very makeshift and possibly quite porous. They’re a little too complacent about the whole crisis; if the ebola virus crosses over to the animal population, then Nigeria will have become an Ebola hotspot just like DRC and Sudan. We have fruit bats in Lagos = there are some on my street here in Surulere. I don’t want to see a fake Health Minister like Onyebuchi Chukwu with his fake smile coming out with empty assurances in the press. Tell the public what the reality of the situation is and take control of the resources at your disposal: as far as I’m concerned I don’t think enough has been done about closing the borders or banning flights from countries which have not banned flights from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. We have also not been told clearly whether or not all the people who came in on the flight with Patrick Sawyer have been traced. This is a disgustingly low standard of public information.

Let me just say this for real though. I feel so many of us Nigerians are sick in the head, we hardly process information before praising it. I know very well that Nanosilver is some sort of nutritional/pesticide menene because I was worried/surprised that someone/company with a cure for such historical epidemic would hide his identity, so I googled the product. We are really very careless as Nigerians. ZMAPP was probably expensive so they quickly Bought black market, like what the hell. Why are we not using one that has already been used on humans? To think that the silly journalists who were videoing the Minister could not think about this, irritates me. We just have really slow people in places of importance.

What is in America’s best interest is not in the world’s best interest, definitely not in Nigeria’s best interest.
If half the population of Nigeria was wiped out with disease, think of all the equipment we will buy from them and land freed for further mineral exploration.
New age of colonialism is going into a country causing chaos and selling them weapons to kill themselves or better yet, infect them with a disease, wait for half to die and then sell the drugs at a premium just like HIV before Mandela took a stand…..Patrick Sawyer had links to the US….travelling all that way when he was desperately sick…to Nigeria Africa’s most populous country when majority of the republicans can’t even stand blacks in their own country let alone in Africa….I won’t be surprised if they’ve discovered a new mineral that makes their weapons go faster and want to wipe out the populace to get at it!!!

Most comments on this subject have been expressed based on half truth or unresearched news on the part of Bella naija. I have read a most recent article by a jurno in US about this claim of nano silver curing Ebola. The writer gave the name of the Nigeria scientist as Dr Rima and she is not anonymous. Nano silver research has been on for years and the writer even gave the named of the two scientists that started it and their discoveries and publications. The truth is that nano silver inhibit the growth of virus from the host. The only inconclusive issues are the means of administring, right amount of dose and any possible side effect since no documented use of dose and treatment. My take is this, Zmapp is an experimented drug so is nano silver in case of ebola. US refused to give us Zmapp, we have nothing to loose if we administer nano silver than watch our citizens die helplessly. Another angle to it is that the US FDA may have rubbished nano silver just to laud their Zmapp on the world. I don’t see any diference in what they are doing with Zmapp to what we want to do with Dr Rima’s recommended nano silver. Why the biff?

I have read majority of the readable comments above, and I can conclude that most Nigerians are pathologically illiterated beyond redemption. Just wondering how an a average Nigerian got to this point of inability to reason objectively, if not. multidimensionally. Why would anyone be so dementially bereft of sensible thinking to the extent of informing the world that the US is knocking the drug because of all those stated reasons ! Why is it so difficult for an average Nigerian to do a search, and read up on the Nano stuff, and by the way, not even the Minister of Health was able to tell the world the name of the Nigerian Scientist in Diaspora? We had better prayed, and ceaselessly too as the government that can’t get back more than 200 CHIBOK girls has no idea on what to do with this nasty EBOLA ordeal. All those in quarantine are just there while someone is hoping somehow, they will recover but sadly, conditions are deteriorating terribly as informed.

Sorry SA, I do not know which part of the World you come from and I can tell you that we have well educated professionals of Nigerian decent here and in diaspora in all the disciplines you can think of. We need to rationalize what we put on the web, Nigerians pull the web and read each content of any topic but we should not rely on what is there alone we have to do our own findings also, and this is the time we can test the Nanosilver on Ebola patients who do not have any means of cure. This is not the time to rely on foreign prescriptions and continue to watch our people die. If you have an alternative do not hesitate to give Nigeria we will weight it also, and if you do not have any don’t criticize others who are willing, negatively as pathological illiterates. Mind your Words.

Please help me tell them o! I am tired of this country and their lack of analytical skills.

      Dang, people!

You don’t just test drugs on human beings for crying out loud.. You must always do a RISK ANALYSIS.

There is a chemist on here who claims to have done research on nano particles.

Didn’t your professor tell you to do risk analysis? If the positives outweigh the negatives, then by all means, go ahead with the experimentation In this case, NanoSilver 10PM or whatever the heck it is called is a PESTICIDE-

While it may work to kill Ebola virus, BECAUSE IT IS A PESTICIDE, It will destroy everything in its way… except if it is targeted for just ebola virus which it is not.

Use your brains Nigerians! You are looking for a cure, and you may have found it, but what about the damage? What if you get cured, and then you get brain cancer? or ovarian cancer? or an mental retardation? We need to assess!

Also Dr Rima IS NOT A NIGERIAN. Just hearing that name alone- RIMA- should be enough to make you KNOW.. But you can like to google her name.

Second of all the U.S wants nanosilver classified as a pesticide because it kills bacteria, Period. They have not done any studies to prove it’s harmful to humans, also anything that has the potential to lose America’s pharmaceutical industry money is seen as a threat. They would rather people die. Listen we asked them for their drug zmapp, they said no, now they should leave us alone and stay out of our business.

Read up on the u.s pharmacy industry and their denial of life changing drugs. Illness is big business in America, imagine if all of a sudden people were cured of major diseases? The American healthcare industry would collapse. Google the story about a boy called Billy Best. He had terminal cancer when he was 16, and given months to live. He read about a dr on Canada who had created a cure called 714X. The boy ran away to Canada to get this drug, long story short, the boy is still alive today and in his 20’s. They tried to bring the drug to America, but an injunction was filed by Dana Farber to stop it. Dana Farber is the largest cancer drug manufacturer in America. Don’t always believe everything you hear..always look for a motive.

I am amazed at how we Nigerians turn avenues such as this into an opportunity to throw tantrums at each other. Common! We are not the enemy. Ebola, bad leadership and curroption are. Just because someone sees an issue from a different angle does not make them stupid or an illiterate. That is the power in diversity, maybe they have their facts; you never know. Instead, we should harness the power in diverse collective intelligence to collaborate, share, educate, enlighten and speak against the common enemies.

This document was recently leaked onto the internet:

It appears to be suppressed evidence of an extremely effective cure for Ebola virus. One that is apparently inexpensive, readily available, and impossible to patent (due to the fact that it’s a natural substance). Regulatory agencies have been trying, to no avail, to have it banned in the US… and it looks like it has already been successfully banned in the EU.

    Document Background

In 2008, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), in conjunction with several other federal agencies, quietly conducted clinical research into the use of silver nanoparticles against Ebola and other hemorrhagic fever viruses. Astonishingly, they discovered that silver were highly effective against these deadly viruses, including the nanoparticles Ebola virus. They later presented their findings to federal health regulators and other national health authorities. But these findings were kept top secret.
The presentation was called “Silver Nanoparticle Neutralization of Hemorrhagic Fever Viruses,” and the gist of the presentation was that silver nanoparticles displayed “powerful neutralizing effects against hemorrhagic fever viruses,” including Arenavirus and Filovirus (i.e., Ebola). This clinical presentation was conducted under the auspices of the DoD’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) Center for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction, and the presentation was given by researchers from the Applied Biotechnology Branch, 711th Human Performance Wing of the Air Force Research Laboratory. In other words… those are the big guns! Which is to say that they are the very people responsible for keeping this nation safe from outside threats like bioterrorism. That clinical presentation – made to federal regulators and national health authorities – was later summarized in a printed document, de-classified, and cleared for public release. Nonetheless, there were zero news reports to be found on the release of said information… in spite of the fact that Department of Defense researchers found nano-silver to be profoundly effective against Ebola and other hemorrhagic fever viruses.

Furthermore, it appears that this would not be the first time that the Defense Threat Reduction Agency sponsored research into the use of nano-silver for hemorrhagic fever viruses, and found it to be effective. For example, here’s a study (…/interaction-of-silver…) published in the prestigious Journal of Nanobiotechnology in 2010, demonstrating silver’s effectiveness against the Tacaribe virus, a hemorrhagic fever virus nearly identical to Ebola.

The individual who leaked this document wants to keep his source confidential (for their safety, he says), so it’s difficult to verify it’s authenticity. However, I will say that it certainly does appear to be legitimate IMO. What do you guys think about this?

I am thoroughly embarrassed to say I am a Nigerian scientist after reading the article and the many responses on here. Nanosilver is a pesticide. First off, silver is toxic and not to be ingested. Would you melt your silver necklace and drink or eat it? Second, in nano form, exposure internally will be greater, and risk of adverse outcomes higher. Third, nanosilver was not invented by a Nigerian. When you hear that certain fabrics will not allow bacteria grow, its nanosilver. Fourth, because of its nano form, once you spread it in the environment, it will be difficult to remove from the environment and will contaminate everyone who comes in contact with that environment for years to come. How would an MD who calls himself the health minister not be able to do a tox screening using bloody google to just find out per chance what it is about nanosilver? We all have cell phones and internet access now. Why cant he just google it and see what comes up? The US is trying to save you. The problem is we will expose people to this toxic chemical, create a new wave of kidney and liver failures and blame ebola. In the meantime, someone will be making a killing cha ching style from selling this agent of death. Nanosilver is useful but not when ingested!!!!!
Nigeria my beloved country, you dont have to listen to white people if you are worried. Set up a chat board for your professionals that have been trained in toxicology, pharmacology, pharmacy, and other related fields to provide you with current information. You coughed your children up because you would not feed or train them. They went abroad and are experts in these fields. What you are struggling to learn about, they know so much about. They dont need to be paid – their brothers and sisters and parents live in Nigeria and they dont want ebola to wipe them out. They still have something in their hearts for the country and can provide you with opinions that are scientifically based. Let us stop showing astounding ignorance, illiteracy and tactlessness and please handle this in a way that will prove to the world that we are more than lower order mammals.

Have you lost your mind? Nano silver is not toxic and has been in the environment for centuries. It is interesting to see the propagandist jump on this story and spread such disinformation like you just did. Whose payroll are you on?

Ebola Victims are likely to die anyway so if this unnamed scientist recommended Nano silver as serum for Ebola. I think they should try it out as it might work.

What is the hullabaloo all about? If the FMOH and Federal government of Nigeria approve to use the drugs, ‘Nanosilver’, in a Sovereign country of Nigeria, it is the Country’s affair. Under an Ebola Pandemic we can use something if there is no solution to it. The current situation, as urgent and cogent it is: is demand driven and may deride ethical issues. After all, I was practicing in the communicable diseases hospital, IDH Kano when Pfizer a USA company tested the drug that caused a lot of problems among the recipients in the 90’s during a multiple epidemic of Measles, gastroenteritis and meningococcal meningitis in Kano State, Nigeria. For me as a person this is an important development since the Country has woken up from a chronic slumber of dependency from colonization and super powers prescriptions. “The consequences of our not acting should be weighed against the benefit of using the drugs”.
Lets document everything on the studies, impact and effects of Nanosilver and therapeutic outcome in Ebola patients. In the past many drugs have come into existence against HIV from Nigeria they were all discarded on the same premise construed on international politics, interest and greed. The Baby is bad do not mean we throw away everything about the baby: towel, dress, bathing water and soap. We have to sift the chaff from the wheat.
However, this should not undermine all public health practices to prevent further spread of the disease in the Country. Let us believe in ourselves, as the present information from the Ministry of health, diseases control, ministries of information and internal affairs should be pursued vigorously by all Nigerians. We should raise our suspicion index and become surveillance (disease detectives) officers at all levels (be it religious or herbalist) of our activities and report all suspected cases for investigation and possible quarantine.
I believe when all these international politics, unilateral interest, naked expression of ignorance by Countries and individuals, diplomacy, arguments, deaths and morbidities about Ebola are over, Africa and its governments should redirect their policies and make evidence based actions that will demystify bio-terrorism insinuations and clarify origins of these diseases that has devastated the Continent for sustainable solutions and methodologies to control or stop them. The present developer of Nanosilver should be kept secret till further notice. Countries in Africa should then balance Public health (proactive) and curative (reactive) medicines in their daily endeavors, because for too long we have relegated public health to our continuous detriment.
Time has come for action and less oratory. The Minister should go ahead and try the drug and tell the World the therapeutic outcome then after. There is always hope for improvement, the West started like this and later removed the ladder: making their discoveries unreachable by us. The Ebola patients should not be left just to die while we observe them do so.

Pesticide or no pesticide. Will it supress or cure ebola? Na the koko be that.
If it will, then use it. Its simple? Was Zmapp not designed for animals? Is it not working?

Life is in phases, its either pleasant or unpleasant moments. Whatever we make out of life phases is what makes all difference. We Nigerians have really lost faith in ourselves, what we are capable of doing all in the name of inferiority complex… Many here can’t even boil an egg not to talk of frying and we are here cricticizing the effort our only brave scientist who stood up to give us HOPE…. Arise O compatriots and obey the call of challenge. Let’s embrace what we have, let’s support our people and prove the so-called Americans wrong…. Ebola is outside there killing the innocents, killing both old and young and we are still waiting for the so called master know all of the Americans to come save the day from the virus they created and injected into human just to get what they want… I am not a racist but please let save our skin, let’s proof we are black from birth till death and not the white folks that change skin colours at every stage of their lifetime like the cameleons… I am proud of my country let’s make our resources count by supporting our products be it fake or not…. Remeber whatever our minds can concieve, believe we’ll always Achieve

Americans are far worst than the slums because they always regarded us as the third war nations instead of classifying all humans to be Gods lovely creature. What a hellish world where love doe’s not lead but destruction amongst ourselves is always upfront? From the first day i heard about this Ebola disease, i got the revelation that the virus was infested by the Westerners as Bio-terrorism attack against Africans because i really find no reason why there should be reported cases of Ebola disease since 1976 without having the cure for it neither to keep the cure they previously used in treating those who contacted it at then. There’s a saying that a convenient of one man brightens others which means, iron sharpening iron so if the so called Americans and the rest of the world cannot sharpening we the Africans, they should be prepared to face the wrath of God because God is sovereign!

Since hay days, so many here in Africa only known the name Ebola to be a name of river in DR Congo but now the river Ebola is now known or turned to be Ebola disease after classifying it to be a hemorrhagic fever in humans and other primates. As we all may know herein, the original name for the Ebola virus was Marburg virus which was first discovered in Germany in the year 1976.

Here in this article you will find out some simple facts about such bio-terrorism viruses attacks by westerners. In 20th century by the time world war 1 began, attempts to use anthrax were directed at animal populations. This generally proved to be ineffective. Shortly after the start of World War I, Germany launched a biological sabotage campaign in the United States, Russia, Romania, and France.[4] At that time, Anton Dilger lived in Germany, but in 1915 he was sent to the United States carrying cultures of glanders, a virulent disease of horses and mules. Dilger set up a laboratory in his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. He used stevedores working the docks in Baltimore to infect horses with glanders while they were waiting to be shipped to Britain. Dilger was under suspicion as being a German agent, but was never arrested. Dilger eventually fled to Madrid, Spain, where he died during the Influenza Pandemic of 1918.

Herein is another case of how humans from the western world used to affect fellow humans with deadly diseases all for fame. In 1972 police in Chicago arrested two college students, Allen Schwander and Stephen Pera, who had planned to poison the city’s water supply with typhoid and other bacteria. Schwander had founded a terrorist group, “R.I.S.E.”, while Pera collected and grew cultures from the hospital where he worked. The two men fled to Cuba after being released on bail. Schwander died of natural causes in 1974, while Pera returned to the U.S. in 1975 and was put on probation. There’s no doubt that the Americans can infect this deadly Ebola disease to exhort monies from we Africans.

There was another issue named Rajneeshee bioterror attack in US in the year 1984, Whereby in Oregon in 1984, followers of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh attempted to control a local election by incapacitating the local population. This was done by infecting salad bars in 11 restaurants, produce in grocery stores, doorknobs, and other public domains with Salmonella typhimurium bacteria in the city of The Dalles, Oregon. The attack infected 751 people with severe food poisoning. There were no fatalities. This incident was the first known bioterrorist attack in the United States in the 20th century.

Herein are Clinical phases of Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever’s presentation as described below. Notethat phases overlap due to variability between cases. With this, it proves to us that the originated name for Ebola was Marburg and it’s a virus firstly identified in Germany in the year 1967.

Incubation: 2–21 days, averaging 5–9 days.
Generalization Phase: Day 1 up to Day 5 from onset of clinical symptoms. MHF presents with a high fever (~40˚C) and a sudden, severe headache, with accompanying chills, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pharyngitis, maculopapular rash, abdominal pain, conjunctivitis, & malaise.
Early Organ Phase: Day 5 up to Day 13. Symptoms include prostration, dyspnea, edema, conjunctival injection, viral exanthema, and CNS symptoms, including encephalitis, confusion, delirium, apathy, and aggression. Hemorrhagic symptoms typically occur late and herald the end of the early organ phase, leading either to eventual recovery or worsening & death. Symptoms include bloody stools, ecchymoses, blood leakage from venipuncture sites, mucosal & visceral hemorrhaging, and possibly hematemesis.
Late Organ Phase: Day 13 up to Day 21+. Symptoms bifurcate into two constellations for survivors & fatal cases. Survivors will enter a convalescence phase, experiencing myalgia, fibromyalgia, hepatitis, asthenia, ocular symptoms, & psychosis. Fatal cases continue to deteriorate, experiencing continued fever, obtundation, coma, convulsions, diffuse coagulopathy, metabolic disturbances, shock and death, with death typically occurring between Days 8 and 16.[14]

Firends why are we fighting with ourselves? We need to look at this situation carefully. We need an anti-virus for Ebola, the US have said they have it but don’t have to spare. We dnt know what it is so we can’t source it. An unnamed Nigerian recommends a drug approved by WHO why won’t we @ least try it? Let’s ask ourselves, If you need smthg to save your life and some1 else has it but won’t give you but another person says try dis let’s see if it’ll work. Then the person who has refused to give now says to you ‘that is poison oh’ Who would you believe? Remember WHO isn’t a political org but d US? WHO has told us that a person can catch Ebola from an infected person not necessarily critically ill person while the US has spread info dat u catch only when in contact w a critically ill person. Very conflictly and dangerous info. Who do you think we shld trust?

Why is the US and their agency so afraid of the truth about Ag NPs? Obvious there’s something fishy about it, even we didn’t know what silver does but their questions and actions leave much to be desired. It points to something bigger – and we know it. Silver (Ag) does a lot of wonders. Take it or leave it and die. Its up to an individual, If I fail sick I would take it. Its up to you, let NO one tell you what to do with your body, take it and live

West African s will always sell their minds to white, if amaricans have be able to treat thier citizens of Ebola,, why are they need giving out the drugs to Ebola victims in Africa. And ofcos I don’t expect American s to approve Nano silver as a good prescription for Ebola because African scientist has discovered it and is a cheap . American medical association will not also make money .

ask yourself if I was infected with Ebola. would I try nano silver knowing that it could save your life.
And knowing that it could harm you. At this point I don’t think it matters dose it 30% chance that you will survive. And that’s like gambling it’s not guaranteed. I don’t think that 10pp is going to hurt you more then Ebola will.
