Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) students are said to be facing deplorable conditions on campus due to lack of availability of hostel accommodation on campus.

According to a source on the Nairaland forum, the situation has gotten so bad, that students have been forced to sleep in classrooms and also spread their washed clothes there.

Read the individual’s account:

Things have worsened in yaba college of technology after the school has refused to begin the sale of hostel accommodation form a month after resumption.

The school authority has given no reason for it and the students suffer and go through a lot.

Its bad to see students who come from different parts of the country and have no relative in lagos sleep in classrooms to meet up with lectures and assignments.

Most of them have resorted to sleeping in classes.
It is very bad to see students wash their clothes and dry it in classroom to the extent of taking their bath outside classes and all corners of the school very early in the morning around 4 a.m

It has been happening for many years and nothing is done about it.

We need the authorities to see this because it is inhumane

Mods please help out

You’ll feel worse when you realise the classrooms are cleaner than the Hostels. Especially the toilets.

Hmmmmmm….YABA COLLEGE OF TENSION!…. @KOKO and PALOMA…..am not gonna agree with you guys…I was a full time student in yabatech 8years ago…. and I was deprived of an hostel accommodation… and I was attending lectures all the way from SANGO OTA in Ogun State and that was after paying 1000naira to apply for the hostel… Mind you, hostels were awarded to people living close to the school (Onipanu, abule oja, shomolu, mushin, ojuelegba etc)… I remember a friend whose house was around Abule Oja and was given an accommodation.. It was so frustrating.. It was only God that saved me then, cos I would leave my abode as early as 5am just to meet up with morning lectures and this really affected me academically..i almost got kidnapped, boarded one chance buses, going home late at night etc….it was really really that bad….you can imagine the other side of school called staff quarters wasting away with no tangible structures built on it… Even the so called hostels are nothing to write about…. Federal Government should please look into this Yabatech wahala…. Lecturers nko?…. worst!.. I remember one particular man in the Student affairs office, whenever you go there to seek for assistance, if you are a lady, chaii!..you are done for!…this man gets erected, abi aroused nii…while inserting his two fingers in your nostrils!…. and he would say and I quote ” oya expand your nostrils”…. before you know it…His KINIKAN is outstanding!… meeeeeehnnnn!…. so,i heard some ladies that encountered him gets sick after the experience!…YABATECH!…. Mogbedi fun yin o!..(I carry yansh for una)… God will help the HOSTELLESS STUDENTS O!

I don’t think this should have been published because the next thing Yabatech officials will do is to start locking the classrooms and then these people will have nowhere to sleep. The educational system in Nigeria id deplorable, only the extremely strong come out of it and that doesn’t mean they have learnt skills that will make them employable. The biggest learning point from going through higher education in Nigeria is being able to cope with terrible conditions a.ka. hustling… which i do not believe is a crucial thing to learn. And maybe it is the reason why when these people finally make it in life they act like they need to show off their wealth because “they don’t look like where they came from”

Okay now I think I am ranting… BN shouldn’t have been published sha o, If it were Unilag classes officials will start locking the class after 7pm meaning no where to read… no where to sleep

Is there any reason why our CHANGE should not be killing all the political office holders in Nigeria: from all the Heads of States, Presidents, Ministers, Governors, Commissioners and to the Local Government Councillors? So that anyone who wants to aspire to such an office would know that Nigerians are now ready to hold them accountable.

    the way(s) forward
another 1000 units of housing in the Yaba area?
another 1000 units of specific university housing in the Yaba area?
more distance-learning for students of these universities?
more campuses / universities around Lagos, not just in the Yaba area?
time for a stakeholders’ meeting and a public debate.
Well done, BellaNaija, Nairalanders, commenters, and media. Let’s go there. Time for change.

Paloma I doubt u being a student, what do you mean is not the schools fault, there are no PT student in session, these people are full time student,I am a student there, our dear school has failed us,YCT has been like this for some years now and nothing Has been done,we know success is not served on a platter of gold but in the bid to succeed should man reduce himself to animals? Should we be subjected to harsh reality life never gave in pursuit of our dear dreams? if we are the leaders of tomorrow ,then our today should not be sacrificed on the slab of wickedness of today’s leaders……..this is inhumane,Shall we continue like this?? Hell No,I rest my case^^

It’s so painful that the students are bringing up something like this inorder to tarnish the image of the school and the name of the Rector. Most of these students are part timers that refused to go home after their first semester break. The school environment is being messed up by this so called part timers who even go as far as removing banners from the posted zones, the school toilets are not excluded from their mess, during my findings most of these part timers claimed to be a full time student at their various homes which resulted in them not being able to go home because they wanna enjoy the social life of the school and the part timers aren’t entitled to the school hostel which led them to sleeping in classrooms.our government are the one not helping issues.

I’m a student of Yabatech and yes it is true, students sleep in class. Both the full time and part time ones. The living conditions in yabatech are horrible, even the hostels. the students are more than the number of hostels available, the funny thing is even when people get hostels , the school refuses students who have opportunity to squat to do so. i believe our management is just been wicked. Now hostel form is out and they have started bringing out names, still most yabatech students wont get hostels. It’s pathetic. I must get hostel sha, because i cannot be going all the way from Ogun State to attend lectures at yabatech everymorning.
