Great concept . Though they could have used a nicer Ankara pattern . That one was kinda blah. Also she could have done with embellishment on her dress to make it more fabulous. The maids are absolutely gorgeous.

I don’t understand Jidennas hair, is it relaxed?

Ankara itself is not Nigerian or African for that matter, it was created by the Dutch to imitate the traditional Indonesian batik. When the Indonesian’s did not buy them, they decided to bring it to the West and Central African market.

If they wanted a Nigerian print – then perhaps Adire, Aso Oke, George, or any of our native material would have been more appropriate, Besides what exactly is the ball celebrating, the video didn’t really relay the message clearly. Still I recognize the effort and the recent black celebration/support that is going around the US.

This is just wrong on so many levels. Why must the Nigerian Independence from the British be celebrated from a euro-centric standpoint?

      September 27, 2015 at 7:33 pm

I too was shocked about this because the whole ad reflects the colonial era ( you know the Lord Lugard times) of British Nigeria! The ad was beautifully done but there is a huge discrepancy in the concept and the message it is trying to portray. I feel if you want to celebrate Nigerian independence from the British there should be a Nigerian authenticity that reflects only our own cultural identity as in who we are now instead of taking us back to the colonial times and reflect us as in how the British see us! I won’t be surprised if the creative director was a British or had very strong British direction in this concept.

While reading this I thought the Ball was going to be held in Nigeria until I saw Maryland because I was like Jidenna will have to prepare in full armour than he did for his last visist. LOL

Love the ankara theme but not sure about the whole concept, I see an English Western culture being more incorporated than the Nigerian. The pictures are incredible but the background should have reflected Nigerian culture not english. For example, the paintings could have have been Nigerian or the furnitures more traditional but with ¨Class¨ But then, i guess that won´t be ¨classy¨enough for a ball.

A Queen should be sitting on the floor. I don’t like the pics of the female on the floor. The pics are beautiful though.

Chaiiii can people just stop being judgemental and just appreciate what they did. Which one is colonial era in this one now, I actually think it was a nice original concept. If you don’t like it, can you do any beta. Before you start judging why not put smthn 2geda for ur church/mosque and how easy it is.

Mscheeew…. Wrong choice of dance, fabric, human (Jidenna who talks trash abt his home), his jacket so out of place, the queen’s dress is indecent…etc. Lesson for the day, do ur research and get an expert on 9ja culture before embarking on such. This just seems like a caricature.
