Speaking against Sexual Violence! Watch Miss Nigeria Ezinne Akudo on ‘Heart of the Matter’ with Omilola Oshikoya

Adesola Ade-Unuigbe

Ezinne Akudo

Miss Nigeria 2013, Ezinne Akudo has been a strong advocate against sexual abuse.

Earlier in the year she set up a Rape Crisis Centre in Lagos through her foundation – The Eight Foundation – and also launched a campaign with a number of celebrities to raise awareness for the stigma rape victims face.

She had earlier stated that “We live in a world where women are abused daily and are unable to speak up. One out of four women experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. This crime can take place at anytime and can happen to anyone regardless of tribe, religion or social class. Sadly, the society’s response to this heinous crime has led victims to believe that silence is the best option. However, Speaking up is our greatest weapon in this fight against sexual violence.”

Featured on ‘Heart of the Matter’ with co-host Omilola Oshikoya, Ezinne explains why it is important to never remain silent.

I struggle to understand how the presenter of this show got the job. She looks extremely bored, wooden, disengaging and extremely unenthusiastic. Her body language borders on repetitiveness, having watched a few of her interviews, and it just feels like de javu to me. The interviewee on the hand seems like she’s reading from a script, and seems ill informed on the subject. Religion should not be brought into this. It is personal for crying out loud. I mean this is an extremely serious subject that one has to speak with conviction and knowledge. Come on guys, get your act together.

In a country like ours where this issue is still very much considered taboo, I can only applaud Ezinne for getting involved at such a young age and being committed to it, partnering with Mirabel and other agencies, etc. I think it’s very admirable. She could have gone for a ‘safer’ pet project like other queens but chose this one, and I actually think the ‘conviction and knowledge’ you mentioned was there and will continue to grow over time, with experience and practice. It was clear to me that she’s passionate about her project and that she is fully involved in it, even if the delivery could be improved (and like nnenne said, the presenter could have set the tone better).
And this show is actually the initiative of a church, hence the ‘religious’ angle (the ‘Kingdom Perspective’) that Omilola brought in at the end. In a religious society like Nigeria, I think it’s actually very positive that some churches are getting involved in fighting these issues, instead of shying away from them or even helping to cover them up. I do agree with you that Omilola could work on being more engaging and expressive in her interviews. Hopefully she will improve with time and feedback. For me I am just glad to see these issues finally being discussed openly in the Nigerian public space, and hopefully this awareness will continue to grow.

Not just sexual violence, all violence against women should be addressed. Nigeria is failing women.

What is wrong with you? Where do you get off telling people to shut up. Argue with intelligence and wit, while you’re at it, get some decorum.

    I do agree,

The presenter could be more upbeat. Maybe take classes in telecommunication if she hasn’t. I struggle with this show, albeit a great concept. For that reason.

@ word… True, Anna made a mistake but let’s not judge her. Sometimes we fall down but we get up again.
Vanessa Williams, one time Ms. America, did it. Anna, if you are reading this, just tell yourself that you are capable of getting up again. It’s gonna be hard but determination is all you need. The sky is your limit.

Hope younger girls will learn from your mistake.

Very stupid comment. Because Vanessa Williams did it, it makes it acceptable and alright? You could’ve ended your comment where you said she made a mistake, let’s not judge her. You decided to go further and make such a ridiculously absurd point.

anna did not make any ,mistake, this info is coming from an insider here in dubai where that silly girl dropped out from, she knew damn well what she was getting herself into, she planned it well, to use pregnancy to tie down Flavour into marrying but it didnt go as planned, Flavour said and i quote she can keep the pregnancy as he will take care of all but marrigae is out of it for now.

Why are presenters in naija always disconnected. They don’t have insight on what they are discussing most of the time. They also don’t know how to ask intelligent questions. I bow for who dey employ them o. Many people are complaining, even our competes are not topnotch. Apart from IK and Vimbai of course. They are all below average. Na wa o, to go school for obodo oyinbo shouldn’t be the criteria too. Keep it up Ezinne,we need intervention from government. But you look different her abi na instagram wayo lol.
