Dr Giwa

Dr Giwa

Open Letter from Dr Suraj Giwa‘s sister Biola Giwa-Adeyemi.

First of all, the case was between Lagos state Government Vs Ibinabo Febresima but not Giwa Vs Ibinabo Febresima (Fiberesima). On this faithful day of February 26, 2006 along the Lekki Epe Express way, my late brother Dr Giwa was driving with his brother and another family friend in his car coming from a meeting in Ajah, they were held up in a traffic around the evening time, when this tragic accident happened.

Ibinabo was driving towards Lekki while the late Dr Giwa was coming from the other direction facing towards Island, just by shop-rite, when ibinabo’s jeep flipped and lost control from her lane jumped over the culvert or pavement that demarcate the road from the on coming vehicle.

The speed that skipped and flipped a jeep over the road demarcation will be considered ‘Reckless and Endangerment‘ because the VIO dept checked the jeep brakes, the engine and all the mechanical and electrical of the jeep but the result shows nothing wrong with the jeep and confirm that the accident as due to ‘OVER SPEEDING‘ in which the result was on record.

After the accident, Ibinabo left the scene of the accident without checking for any survivors, she took the license plate and registration out of the car and fled from the scene, that was considered “HIT AND RUN”. The people at the scene of the accident recognized her as Ibinabo Febresima, and stated she was drunk.”Driving Under Influence” of whatever she had.

The State Department of Transportation has to use the VIN number to locate the Owner of the jeep, in which the owner was Daniel Wilson. That was my very first time of hearing the name of Ibinabo Febresima. The Doctor died at the scene of the accident because the jeep was on top of the Honda accord driven by him and they couldn’t save him on time because of the seat belt and the weight of the jeep, the brother and the other family friend in that car had survived. Did she know the state of mind and the emotional instability of the people involved in that accident up till now, Ibinabo has never been in a Comma.

After all the evidences against her, with the result of the VIO by the State department of Transportation, The DPP office took over and charged her to court and she hired Festus Keyamo in which after reviewing the case he withdrew by saying he cannot represent her because it’s a bad case.

Doctor Giwa has a living mother for goodness sake, wife with 3 children, Ibinabo deprived him from seeing his children graduate from university and getting married, also from being the one to bury his mother at her old age, ‘Whereas no one ever prayed that on the day of their children’s success and happiness they should replaced them with someone else’.

Ibinabo was never remorseful, they brought her to meet with me shortly after my brother’s death in GRA Ikeja before my return back to the USA, but her only concern then was to drop the charges against her. I told her that it’s not my family Vs her but the State Vs her, that where I come from in USA that we do not interfere with the justice system, that they should do their job and advise her to apologize publicly to the masses and to the family and throw herself to the mercy of the court.

She said and l quote “I CAN’T DO THAT, BECAUSE IS GOING TO DAMAGE MY CAREER” what an ego, she cannot apologize publicly, I feel like kicking her ass. She’s worried about her stupid career, What happened to the career of the Doctor, who happened to be a ‘MEDICAL DIRECTOR AND THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL REHABILITATION MEDICINE AT GENERAL HOSPITAL LAGOS.

People say there is no justice in Nigeria, but it does once in awhile. The lower court magistrate O.A Isaac found her guilty with the option of 100,000.00 Naira, which is considered a judicial recklessness, 100k does not even buy an iPad, the life of someone does not worth more that 100k, so that people will take the liberty of committing crimes.

Later, Justice Deborah Oluwayemi of the High court found her guilty and overturn the option of fine and gave her 5 yrs in prison, she spent 3 weeks and came out on bail to go to Court of Appeal, however, how can a convicted person came out on bail, here in USA you will be in jail and they will transport you to and from each time you have an hearing. Finally Appeal court found her guilty and sentence her to 5 years in prison.

Let her face the wrath, it is said that you can run but can’t hide, it’s a law of Kama that catches up, this will serve as a deterrent to others. Who will believe after 10yrs she will still be slammed, The Family of the late Dr Giwa had moved on with our life’s, She was forgiven, it was very difficult and painful, but God gave us especially his mother and children the fortitude to bear the loss.

On behalf of our families and friends, we really thank the Lagos State Government, The attorney general Mr Sasore, DPP Mrs Odutola and colleagues, Justice Deborah Oluwayemi, Justice Jamilu Yammama Tukur, Justice U.I Udukwe-Anyawu and Justice Tijani Abubakar and everyone for their support, no evil shall befall anyone, as you all go out and come in, may God’s grace and protection abide with each and everyone.

‘JUSTICE AT LAST’ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUSTICE AT LAST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUSTICE IS FINALLY DONE !!!!!!!!!!!!.

The jeep she was driving ended up on top of the doctor’s car and yet Ibinabo managed to climb out, remove the licence plates (do you not need screw drivers for this and how did she get to it seeing as the jeep was on top of another car?), grab the particulars and run away? Why are there so many versions of this story? Many implausible versions. Even the eye witness Charles Novia version is full of holes. May the soul of the Dr rest in peace. Ibinabo, just quietly serve your jail term in peace. 11 years have gone by, 5 years would go by as well.

I feel their pain, but this story does not make sense.

According to eye witness account, she was drunk. But this same drunk lady, in a drunken stupor, was able to remove the plate number of a vehicle that was on top of another one. A vehicle has two license plates, but this drunk woman brought out a screw driver and unscrewed 4 screws and removed two license plate in front of a mob– in Lagos!! How is it that no one apprehended her, and she was able to flee? How now? In Lagos o!

I get that the family is angry, for pete sake they have lost their flesh and blood, but this story has loop holes. It makes no sense.

Do you drink? Have you gotten drunk before? When you’re in a drunken state of mind, you can still think, however shock (from the accident) activates your adrenaline.

BTW the accident happened in Lekki, if you know the Lekki area from 1998-2007 was in a different state in comparism to now. I guess you gotta to accept there was an accident, the victim die, while the perpetrator ran away. The law has taken it’s course, so let’s move on.

Whether it makes sense or not.. it is what happened and was proven in court. At some time after the accident. Ibinabo removed the plates and all documents. This fact is not even disputed by Ibinabo . This platenumber story is not heresay but evident proven

The facts are the facts however ridiculous because others would have never done that and be more remorseful . It just shows the kind of heartless person she is

I do agree the story has loops cos a drunken person on a jeep that is on another car being able to do so much is very hard to believe but so does that of the eye witness coming forth for Ibinabo.
In Nigeria, a lot of eye witness just want to put mouth and get attention. Just last 2weeks, early morning on my way to work. A TATA bus swerved off his lane and hit my car by the side, causing a multiple accident. The policeman in the TATA bus came down and started saying ah madam you overtook the bus that is wrong driving, luckily 2 other policemen were inside the same bus and they both came down and testified correctly that there was no overtaking as it was 2 lanes and i was correctly on my lane, mind you the driver didn’t argue but accepted his fault immediately that he didn’t check his side mirror before swerving to the other lane, everyone plus the driver started begging and shushed the false witness .
My point is imagine if at that moment i was unconscious or the TATA driver was unconscious, the funny eye witness trying to protect his free ride would have borne false witness.
You cant bring the dead man back and being a young widow myself, i can understand the pain as it NEVER goes away be it 10years or more but lets move on, we cant remain on the same spot.
Yes, Justice we all say has been served but what next are we going to keep holding on to the hurt forever?
May the soul of Dr. Giwa rest in peace and may Ibinabo herself find closure and learn her lessons too.

Because it wasnt here. BN, you shouldnt take sides regardless of your affiliation with any party. This wont be the first time you refused to publish stories that should be published. Don’t lose your credibility. And dont think we bought this inept ruse of yours

Because it wasn’t here. I remember reading it on LIB and knew BN won’t post it. Please don’t try and play smart with your readers, doing that makes you guys look even more foolish than you’ve already been these past couple of months. Your viewers aren’t dimwits. There’s nothing as good as having integrity. It won’t be surprising if you guys refuse to publish this comment. Shameless things! We were elated when BN came, now you guys have lost credibility and have been an absolute disappointment. It won’t take long before I’m done with BN.

Thre is just so much injustice in Nigeria and I find it personally very sad that BN has become a party to this. You folks should be honest, this post wasn’t created on 16 March as you claim and it certainly wasn’t on the main page. Who exactly are you guys trying to hoodwink? You should know your readers are smarter than that.

Don’t take your goodwill for granted because the readers make or break you. It’s really unfortunate, I had more faith in you than all this. Well, I guess that’s life, it’s all about what puts money in the account, values and integrity can go take a backseat. Real shame.

Of course, you are free not to post this, won’t be a surprise.

My dear, BN is more interested in the cash than the character and integrity now…. In the era where investigative journalism is a ruse….when we thought BN would be succor for us in Nigeria but what do we get, a blog that has joined the bandwagon of false information and fake stories to increase readership volume at the expense of truth…. Keep on doing it wrong!!

Ps: for you to know that you have daily constant readers and once in a blue moon readers (like me)….be careful how you try to act smart because there are many smarter Nigerians home and abroad!! Cheers

(you can publish my comment or not….just make sure you take this criticism as a way to be better or not)

Like, they’ve lost their credibility in all areas. Very soon, someone will come and overtake you, BN in reporting both entertainment, fashion and life stories. Same way they took off Laura Ikeji’s posts and other ridiculous & unprofessional things they’ve done. If you guys aren’t careful, BN will soon be history. It’s only a matter of time, and this isn’t a curse. You guys need to have more integrity, amongst other things. Get your acts together! If you like don’t post this.

This is touching, as it stands now, nobody will ever know what truly happened on that faithful day. God rest the soul of Dr Giwa.
