RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – AUGUST 12: Ryan Lochte of the United States attends a press conference in the Main Press Center on Day 7 of the Rio Olympics on August 12, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Swimwear manufacturer Speedo and fashion label Ralph Lauren on Monday said they were dropping their sponsorship of the disgraced U.S. Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte.

The companies made their announcements after Lochte lied about being robbed at gunpoint by a policeman after a night out during the Rio Olympics.

“We cannot condone behaviour that is counter to the values this brand has long stood for,” Speedo said.

Lochte and three team-mates had in fact damaged a petrol station’s toilet door.

They had been returning to the Olympic village after a night out in Rio when they tried, unsuccessfully, to use the locked toilet and urinated outside instead.

Ralph Lauren, which has removed some of Lochte’s images from its website, said its sponsorship had been only for the Rio Olympics and would not be renewed.

The value of Lochte’s Speedo sponsorship has not been disclosed however.

The contract reportedly expires this year after 10 years.

Speedo said it would donate a $50,000 portion of Lochte’s sponsorship fee to the Brazilian operation of the charity “Save The Children”.

Lochte is one of the most successful swimmers in history, with 12 Olympic medals, and he once had his own reality television show in the U.S.

In Rio, he swam in two events, winning a gold medal in the 4×200 metres freestyle relay along with team-mate Jack Conger.

Lochte’s behaviour has been met with disdain in the U.S. and he has been widely pilloried in the U.S. media.

On Friday, the New York Post carried a front-page headline describing him as the “Ugly American”, along with the slogan “Liar, Liar, Speedo on fire”.

After first claiming that he and his three team-mates had been robbed by bogus policemen, Lochte back-tracked.

He admitted he had, while still drunk, “left details out” and “over-exaggerated some parts of the story”.

In spite of the evidence against him, including CCTV footage, he has however denied that he actually lied in his initial account to Brazilian police.

“We appreciate his many achievements and hope he moves forward and learns from this experience,” Speedo said of Lochte.

Syneron Candela – a hair removal company – is another sponsor of Lochte. It said on Sunday that its sponsorship of the swimmer was an “ongoing investigation”.

4 companies now – which account for all his endorsements. I’m not really sure what he was playing at. You vandalised property, settled the matter with the owner with a payment who probably thought you were just a random drunk tourist. You could have left it at that but nooooooo, I’m an Olympian, an American at that… let me spin this into a juicier story. Jokes on you brah.

You know you’re at the tail end of your swimming career, endorsements are what will keep you going for a while and you had to go and mess it up. Endorsements are all about your character and personality, no one wants to be associated with an idiot.

And there are whispers of him being banned from the U.S Swim team. His dumb attitude, stemming from years ago, has finally caught up with him.

U can say that again! But Oyinbo no dey take their sponsorship play! Once they realise that the person has one coma they take them down pronto! You can’t be representing our brand and be a liar, destructive or having any form of drama! What would it have caused him to just release a statement telling the truth? At least the brand would consider that, give him space and come back when he is clean. Anyway, American is the land of the free and home of the brave, he shld lick his wounds, lie low and come back, even ‘E’ will bring back his reality show then.

Yes oh! they don’t play with their sponsorship. Just last week or two, I was walking through herald square NY; Ralph Lauren had his face outside with his poster. Fast forward to now, I did not see it there anymore today. This is what happens to athletes who are so uneducated about the implications of their endorsement.

I wish something like this could happen in Nigeria. Maybe our unruly celebrities would start behaving themselves

He probably thought that cos Brazil was a 3rd world country,it was anything like Nigeria where there’s no CCTV and all our leaders have no capacity for shame whatsoever. Let’s imagine that this happened in Nigeria…the police will take one llok at the celebrity’s skin colour (oyinbo), swallow the accusation from the celebrity hook, line and sinker, magically “investigate” the matter without the aid of cctv,,arrest the “culprit”, then beat him blue and black until he accepts that such a thing happened and then jails him and forget that he exists at all at all. That’s how he will rot and die in prison as a branded criminal while the celebrity goes scot free. I tire for my country shaa. Nigeria I hail thee
