OAP Freeze shared his two cents on Daystar Pastor Sam Adeyemi’s trending thoughts on mental health.

Before brainwashed Naija folks start their usual ‘judge not’, let me seek guidance from the words of Apostle Paul from the book of;

1st Corinthians 6:3 KJV
[3] Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

Also to shut down the “touch not my anointed” verse that many pastors use as immunity from persecution, here is another bible verse that gives me the right to answer this.

1 John 4:1 KJV
[1] Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Armed with these 2 verses, I have the right to ‘judge’ and ‘try’ every spirit, to ensure that neither I, nor God’s sheep, are defrauded spiritually.

Mental illness, as defined by Mayo Clinics, refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors. Now, according to recent reports, mental health experts in Nigeria have raised an alarm over the increase in cases of mental disorder in this country, and have called for adequate facilities and personnel to curb it. This also comes at a point when the Church has seen dramatic and explosive growth in Asia, Africa and South America. The growth of the African Church in particular is jaw-dropping according to Christianity.com!

Now, if the number of churches are increasing and the number of mental cases are increasing as well, isn’t it safe to suggest statistically, that the increase in Churches, is in symphony with increase in mental health disorders? The burden of this blame, with the evidence provided above, is too heavy to be placed on sin alone, as the noise from one church having 4 branches on the same street, is enough to spike insomnia and depression.

Furthermore, many pastors take the little money their poor congregation has with promises of tremendous returns, which more often than not never materialize, leading to depression and increase in mental health disorders. A friend of mine, who attends a new generation Pentecostal church, told me that her pastor told the poor people who came to beg for alms in the church, to bring the little they have, so that God can increase it! Imagine that!

The state of the Nigerian economy cannot be left out, neither can thecurse of crude oil’ which destroyed most of our other sources of revenue, leading the nation to mindlessly squander its resources, neglecting production and agriculture, slowly leading the nation into bankruptcy.

Dear Pastor Adeyemi,

According to an article on www.bbc.co.uk which states; “We have tended to think of psychological illnesses as a uniquely human trait. But that may be wrong. There is growing evidence that many animals can suffer from mental health disorders similar to those seen in humans. These unfortunate animals could help us understand how and why humans become mentally ill, and why these debilitating disorders ever evolved at all.”

Growing evidence suggests that animals also suffer mental illness, is this due to sin too?

Remember the instance in the bible where a blind man was healed and the disciples asked if he sinned and Jesus said no?

John 9:2-3 KJV
[2] And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?

[3] Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
