Thousands of Malawians across the country on Tuesday marched against the tabling of Abortion Bill and also to urge the Malawi Government to say no to homosexuality.

This followed speculations that the Parliament currently sitting in Lilongwe had queued up the Abortion Bill for debate but government has since refuted the speculations.

The march was organised by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) of the Catholic Church, and the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM), an umbrella mother body of 68 church denominations and 54 Christian organisations.

Dubbed “Citizens’ March for Life and Family” the protest is a public celebration, defence and reaffirmation of truths and facts about life and family as enshrined in the country’s laws, culture, beliefs and value system as a nation.

“Citizens’ March for Life and Family is an open call to all Malawians to love their country by standing up for what is morally right today. In the face of the hugely funded campaign for the ‘killing of unborn children’ (abortion) and legalisation of homosexuality which are a direct attack on life and family respectively,’’ it stated.

The nationwide march was conducted in all the country’s four cities of Zomba, Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu, and in all the country’s 28 districts including Likoma Island on Lake Malawi.

However, government has described as untrue, speculations that the National Assembly was planning to table the Abortion Bill.

“Government wishes to dismiss categorically claims that there is an Abortion Bill ready for debate in the National Assembly,’’ Malawi Government Spokesperson, Malison Ndau explained.

Studies and media reports indicate that Malawi government loses a lot of money through post abortion care and that most maternal deaths result from unsafe abortion.

Malawi is one of the worst countries on the planet and with a very high number of people living below the poverty line. If I remember correctly, this country relies on foreign aid to survive and has serious issues with corruption and low life expectancy, and the imprisonment of homesexuals is what they are most passionate about? Okay.

“Studies and media reports indicate that Malawi government loses a lot of money through post abortion care”
A country with a horrible healthcare system and a society that abandons and discriminates women who abort is complaining about losing money to post abortion care? What care?

@A Real Nigerian, you this little girl with a warped mind! Don’t you have anything better to do? I feel so sorry for you. You just sit in your filthy, little room all day and surf the net. The only time you leave your room is when you need to take a shit. And when you take a shit, you go back to your room with your hands full of flesh-eating virus and deadly bacteria, you grab your chinko phone and you start typing trash. Do you always have to hurl insults at people who do not subscribe to your views? Dummy!

Love when people write what i’m thinking. Rwanda though? With everything going on this is the battle they are choosing to fight? I love how people think protesting and having a law against abortion and homosexuality will actually stop it. It just means one nonsense person with no medical degree will be selling poison as abortion meds and cutting people open. Gay people will continue their thing on the down low.

Well, Abortion is still murder. Yeah, there are children suffering and not well taken care of. But it can’t be used to justify murder.

Family planning and contraceptive should be pushed more not abortion. Also, laws against child abuse.

I think that’s one of the most idiotic justifications for abortion. Because the baby hasn’t fully developed and probably can’t cry they deserve to die if they’re unwanted? People like you who have this rationale just make me shake my head. How about close your legs if you’re unmarried or do family planning if you’re married?
All the things that these people are brainwashing you people with saying a foetus is not a human is all false. As soon as that egg is fertilized that’s a baby. That’s how we all grow! We’re all small and then we become big even when we’re out of our parents wombs. When you’re born do you have teeth? No! When you’re growing older, your teeth starts coming out. Similar with a foetus. The different parts of your body start to develop from throughout the 9 months in the womb.
It’s so sad how liberalism is brain washing people out of things that I think are supposed to be common sense.
Murder is murder! There’s no excuse for it. Close your legs or family plan if you don’t want to be having kids. For people in rural areas, education is key for them to learn to cut their coats according to their size especially when it comes to the number of kids.

And that is why we are where we are in Africa. We will hardly protest against corrupt officials, against big big men sleeping with little girls, against poverty, against children begging in the streets, against charlatans operating as pastors heck against the fact that we are the richest continent but many of us can’t afford 3 square meals a day. If you want Africans to go on protest just mention either homosexuality or abortion and we will be there. Which is interesting because I believe all the problems I listed above are more of an issue in Africa than two men or two women sleeping with each other. What a lost continent we are.

How many of the men in this march can honestly say they have never impregnated a girl and abandoned her leading her to commit abortion? How many of them can honestly say they’ve never cheated on their wives? Doesn’t this country have such a high prevalence of HIV due to married men continually straying? Why no protests against men committing adultery but a march against gay people not being jailed? so much hypocrisy

When will we march against corruption in Nigeria?

    • Somborri

      December 6, 2016 at 11:13 pm

A march against corruption is only about as useful as the physical exercise it provides for the body. Let EVERY Nigerian take a STAND against corruption EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Learn what constitutes corruption (its not subjective) and then say NO to corruption every day no matter how “small” it appears and gradually the foundation that has been eroded over the years will be repaired.

While I won’t disagree that we have a lot of pressing issues like corruption to protest about, I still think that unless a pregnancy is life-threatening, or a result of say rape, abortion is murder, and homosexuality is perverted.

At what point does life become ‘life’? As a tiny foetus? In the 2nd or 3rd trimester? At birth? Once you justify killing a child because you couldn’t abstain or play safe, its a slippery slope from there. God (or say Nature if you are atheist) is the creator of all life forms, not we mortals. Protesting trees being cut down, but cant protest fellow humans being arbitrarily murdered, cos we dont agree they are human, is hypocritical nonsense.

I have nothing against homosexuals, but can never be convinced its a legit sexuality. I think governments should take a chill pill from policing what two consenting adults do in their own homes, but lets not pretend homosexuality is not perverted. Nature created apertures on both the male and the female to copulate with, if the wiring in an individual’s head is messed up, then lets call it that, instead of lying that this thing is natural. Need I mention this is another slippery slope, cos one minute you are justifying sleeping with the same sex, the next, its animals and children. Cos if you can chalk one up to ‘how you feel deep inside’, then why not the other?

The number one reason it seems like supporting homosexuality and abortion seems progressive, is cos a compromised liberal media (yup, the same one that missed the coming of a demagogue as U.S president) has slowly educated us that it is so. But it isn’t
