According to multiple reports on Twitter, the Lagos State Task Force have begun demolition of Otodo Gbame, a fishing community in the outskirts of the Lekki area of the state.

This is coming after residents were sent packing owing to what the state government termed environmental crisis.

Reports say police officers were shooting at residents as they flee their “houses” which is being burnt by the state government.

Social media comments added that one Daniel Aya was shot on the neck and died.

The community had dragged the state government to court after Governor Akinwunmi Ambode gave the order in October 2016.

Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo of a Lagos State High Court in a January 26, 2017 ruling, said that both parties should explore out of court settlement, adding that “the eviction/threat of forcible eviction of any citizen from his home at short notice and without any immediate alternative accommodation or sufficient opportunity to arrange for such alternative accommodation before being evicted from his current abode totally undignifying and certainly inhuman, cruel and degrading….”
