2019: “If I can get the (PDP) ticket… we shall defeat APC” – Donald Duke

"If I can get the ticket of my party ... we shall defeat APC" - Donald Duke - BellaNaija

Donald Duke

Former Cross River State governor Donald Duke in an interview with Dele Momodu for Thisday Newspaper, has revealed he’d like to run for president in 2019.

Duke, who transformed Cross River State into a tourism hotspot in the country, told Momodu he is disappointed by the criticism he received during his tenure.

“You won’t believe this; I was totally disappointed to hear supposedly knowledgeable people utter such words like ‘Na Dubai we go chop?’

It’s this sort of warped mentality that has kept us where we have found ourselves. Lack of big dreams, lack of faith in our abilities to build our own big cities and compete against the greatest nations.

Nigerians are naturally brilliant, and we have the population to give us the power and influence of China, but we are not ready to change our ways of doing things,” he said.

Asked if he’d like to run for president in 2019, Duke replied in the affirmative, but said his party – People’s Democratic Party (PDP) – is deciding on many things. He said:

Dele, do you want to hear the truth? I seriously want to run but my party, PDP, would have to decide on many things.

Our party is well-positioned to win the next election if we can change our style a bit and beat APC at its own game. We must take advantage and benefit from our experience since 1999.

Despite our apparent mistakes, Nigerians can now compare and contrast us with APC. What do we need to win the next elections? We must go to the field with our best candidates. We must learn from how we select our footballers. No one cares where you come from. Can you play well? Pronto. We must show clearly that we are more democratic.

Zoning is good, but it has not worked well in Nigeria. The time has come to unleash the best brains from every part of Nigeria. We must galvanise our youths. They will never follow or support us if we can’t show how we are different and far better than APC.

Duke told Momodu that if he does run for president under the aegis of the PDP, he believes they can defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC). He said:

If I can get the ticket of my Party, I’m certain that with the support of our members and the youths of Nigeria yearning for urgent restoration of hope, we shall defeat APC.

I’m certain Nigerians are anxiously waiting for a leader with proven record of vigour and excellence. They will come out en masse to vote if they see such a candidate. And I promise to join hands with my party to free Nigeria permanently from recession, oppression and depression.

We know what to do to unlock the potentials of our vibrant youths and we possess the most important gift of all, the trust in our ability to take development to every part of our great country and attract our most fertile minds back home from all over the world. Our international friends are also waiting to support the right leadership when they see one. It would be the dawn of a new era in Nigeria.

They have told this one that he’s a fine man so obviously that makes him a great candidate for President.

    ….and he believes it. Smh

      Really?! That’s your mentality?

    • Omono

      November 19, 2017 at 7:49 am

Shut up. You are part of the problem in Nigeria, always finding fault but never offering solutions. Who is the candidate you will be voting for (if you will even vote sef) and what makes him or her better? That is what your comment should be.

Message to young Nigerians for 2019, think about the Nigeria you want for yourself and your children. Study all the candidates and support an educated, forward thinking and youth-oriented candidate who has been a successful leader or business woman or man.
Come out and vote. Don’t sit on your behinds making noise and judging people if you are not going to vote. We cannot have another four years of Buhari, for real!!!!!!!!!!!

      November 19, 2017 at 11:18 am

Lol. I’m part of the problem.

In situations like this, you get what you ask for.
If Nigerians vehemently demand better leaders they’ll get it. But just as usual we prefer settling. Remember Buhari was voted as an “at least better than Jonathan” candidate so we ignored the obvious red flags.

“Who is the candidate you will be voting for (if you will even vote sef) and what makes him or her better? That is what your comment should be.”

This doesn’t even make sense. This is 2017 elections come 2019. In better climes, Nobody should be talking of Presidency yet.

I’ve also already said it here before that I’m not going to vote based on popularity. My choice is probably not going to be most likely to win or the one who spends the most money. History has proven most of them are empty barrels.

Finally I lost interest when he mentioned PDP.
Seems like Nigerians still haven’t learnt.

Do you think these parties don’t know candidates that will actually improve Nigeria’s situation? They do buh we never see them cuz Nigerians are gullible. Nigerian voters won’t do their homework. A few catch phrases here and there, a few photo ops, a few baseless and practically impossible promises, and few 1000naira notes tossed here and there and Nigerians are ready to sell their soul.

I like him. He’s a stable in character. He has ideas; focus; youth. He’s a different breed of politician. However how well did he run rivers; apart from tourism and cleanliness. How was the economy education security?

I don’t like Donald Duke. He’s not the Saint everyone likes to portray him as.

Even at that though, he will definitely make a better president than Buhari. There’s just no comparison at all – Buhari pikin sef go vote for him behind their papa back :’D .

So if PDP wants to come back (gosh I wish they rebranded) they’d better choose him and forget that zoning BS.

we really need to change our way of thinking, we are starting to get used to recycling Presidents that we criticize young blood with a vision and has the strength to see it thru….it’s like they cast a spell on us or something,we have to start encouraging and supporting any young experienced person running for office in this country, just to break the jinx from the old people that do not want to let go…..did you hear of the 82 year old they made ambassador to the U,S, when are we going to step up and take this power from the old ones, we have to start now by choosing young people…..let all these old people go rest abeg…..una never tire… i am fed up

    November 19, 2017 at 10:19 am

We really need to ask questions about Donald Duke. The first question should be what he has been doing to alleviate the sufferings of the people of Bakassi whom he sold to Cameroon in order to gain Obasanjo’s support in his first bid for presidency. This is a well known fact. What about the thousands of acres of people’s land in Cross River he gave Obasanjo in this same bid. Who else is he willing to sell off in his bid for presidency. This is the third or fourth time he’s attempting to run.
Now do you know that Cross River state had one of the largest allocations in Nigeria. This man stole billions more than Ibori, Igbinedion and co for 8 good years. He singlehandedly stole the state and then installed a dummy as he successor to cover up his crimes. Even if we must recycle politicians, there are a few less dubious characters that we could look to I hope.
    Thank you.

    Pls EPP me tell them.

There’s a reason these parties keep churning out the same old garbage.

If Nigerians start snubbing both PDP and APC candidates, they’ll be forced to proffer better flag bearers. But they keep bringing the same old sh*t. And Nigerians keep saying “oh well, at least he’s better than the one we already have”

And voila we have another Jonathan – Buhari succession. Who looses out? Who bears the cost? If you think its the party who lost. Think again. Nigerians are the suckers in this game and it happens evert year.

    Nigerians grow sense.

  12. Seriously

    November 19, 2017 at 1:30 pm

Having to choose between two questionable candidates in the last American election was draining and exhausting. And we are still tormented with the outcome. But Nigeria have been going through this for decades, it’s a norm. Nigerian politicians are Satan incarnates.
Is it against the Nigerian law to have normal, competent, upstanding, reasonable, honest, good hearted candidates? Why recycle same devils all the time. Although, my dad said Donald Duke is okay, I guess he’s not as corrupt, divisive like Buhari.
What’s the solution? How do we get better candidates to run for office?

@ Lemmerant usually i don’t like your “rants’ but on this one you are right..people in Lagos seem to be isolated about the real happenings in other parts of the country..They like razzmatazz and equate such to efficiency ….Go and ask the real people living and working in Cross rivers state and you will hear the real thing ….all he needed to do for ignorant people is to flash a cute smile and speak good grammar and blow pararara..on sax and gullible begin to swoon …..The real Cross Riverians (not the ones in diaspora o) know whats up

@confusedcom, get your facts right . Donald Duke did not sell Bakassi to Cameroun. The Bakassi issue is even beyond the Nigerian civil war when the idiotic Gowon ceded it to Cameroun to block supplies from Biafra. Bakassi always belonged to Cameroun. A little wonder case was contested at the world court.
The only issue I have against him was the clown he handed power to . Other than this , Donald Duke did spectacularly well for Cross River State
I always defined leadership with Donald Duke . Not that I don’t know he is equally tainted with the same bad brush as other Nigerians !

      November 19, 2017 at 4:52 pm

Just so we are enlightened, the issue of Bakassi arose again because Donald Duke used it as a bargaining chip. History tells us Bakassi was negotiated between the British and Germans where just as WWI began the German prince who was eyeing it requitted it to the English. Quote me anywhere, Donald Duke sold the people of Bakassi so that Obasanjo could ultimately sell the land to Cameroon knowing how rich it was in oil, pocket his gains…Duke even foolishly assumed Obasanjo would split the spoils with him. The people of Bakassi speak Nigerian languages/dialects, one is primarily Efik. So this man sold his brothers, his own kindred for nothing. Please I beg again, has this man ever come out even to apologize to his people for this. Has he ever even cared to ask after their well-being. Do you know how Biya and his gendaroare massacring Nigerians there?
It’s a sad story that we don’t know what is happening beyond our little spheres.

      Ps. My avatar don disappear
