#BellaNaijaWCW Blessing Kwomo is providing Holistic Healthcare for Low-Income Families in Nigeria

Growing up in a rural village, a district in Dakata, Kano State, Nigeria, Blessing Kwomo always went back to the hospital after being discharged as she couldn’t recover fully at home. Poor living conditions and other environmental factors contribute to the prevalence of diseases.

Malaria, typhoid fever, cholera and tuberculosis are some of the diseases affecting low-income households, and as Blessing grew up, she discovered that people around her were facing the same problems – recurrence of diseases even after being discharged from the hospital.

She wanted to solve this, hence, in 2014, shortly after her 19th birthday, she launched De Rehoboth’s Therapeutic Studio – which extends home-based health care through tailored family action plans for treating illness and addressing root causes to empower families to live healthier within the context of their surroundings/circumstances.

“The core problem of poverty is a complex, multidimensional disease that requires an equally broad, comprehensive cure. Thus De Rehoboth’s envisages a holistic healthcare solution that addresses both the biological disease & socio-economic factors that aggravate it,” she says.

She founded the company while studying nursing; Blessing discovered that patients’ illnesses could not be cured in the hospital, but at home, after a change in lifestyle and adoption of healthful practices. This discovery came after consultations with patients and their lifestyle at home.

She then suggested natural supplements to help boost patients’ immune system and help them recover. As the results begin to show, her services became more in demand, leading to her launching her business.

De Rehoboth’s Therapeutic Studio offers a holistic approach to healthcare – physical examination and home environment consultation. Because the majority of her clients are low-income earners, Blessing offers payment in instalments for her services and also partnered with an expert to teach families bead-making and sewing so as to increase their income.

The company also organises training for communities on healthy living, personal hygiene and STD education.
Blessing has been featured on CNN and How We Made it in Africa and is a 2015 finalist in the Anzisha Prize, Africa’s premier award for young entrepreneurs.
