TwitterNG reacts to Pastor Ashimolowo’s comments on OAP Freeze

TwitterNG reacts to Pastor Ashimolowo's comments on Daddy Freeze - BellaNaija

Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo is the most recent pastor to condemn OAP Freeze‘s comments on tithing.

In a sermon titled “The Power of the Tithe,” Ashimolowo described Freeze as “yoyo” who “beats his wife” and “sleeps with women.”

“He should shut up and let’s speak,” Pastor Ashimolowo said.

Twitter users have reacted to the pastor’s comments, some saying they are ad hominem attacks, and do not contribute to the conversation, while others fail to see anything wrong.

See what Twitter users have to say below, together with the full sermon.

I hv always had my reservations about some so called men of God. So materialistic, fake, empty. God help us all

You are right. Especially the Yoruba ones, they are by far the worst of all these charlatans.
I think it has to do with the Yoruba culture which promotes arrogance, pretentiousness and more importantly, unhealthy competition between its people. That kind of society breeds nothing but vain, superficial, materialistic people whose lives are marred by insecurity, hollwness and an endless quest to climb the social ladder and show off.
That’s why you see their daddies and babas who preach about nothing but blessing and prosperity. And even when they do, they will eventually dumb it down to the “sowing of seeds” or whatever lingua associated with the Prosperity Gospel. They find it so hard to talk about actual salvation, love, humility and righteousness. And of course, their followers are all too willing to dance to their tunes since all they want to hear is who will prosper in 2018, who will marry in 2018 and who will get a visa in 2018.
      Very sad.

ARN, you have come again. The only Yoruba influence in this is that twisted modern Yoruba culture of senority which prohibits youths from calling elders out. It was never like that in the olden days, if an elder disgrace him/herself or misbehave he/she wasn’t spared. They were stripped off their respect. But they have twisted it so bad now because of insecurities that even to correct an elder now is seen as rebellion and arrogance. It isn’t to do competition. The arrogance and competition you just described is practised by Nigerians in general. It is not accustomed to a specific ethnic group. It is because of competition that there is high rate of fraud, drug pushing, human trafficking and etc. And that isn’t synonymous to the Yorubas. It is to all ethnic groups in Nigeria where there are people who don’t have a mind of their own but constantly do follow follow on everything. Classism is a Nigerian thing after all. And it affects Nigerians daily. That’s why some compete and aspire for prosperity. ? and also don’t forget severe poverty’s influence. The poverty mentality is also our undoing.

      @real Nigerian
Everything you have written is your subconscious stereotype about the Yorubas and nothing else. No one forced you to listen or go to a Yoruba church, finding a pastor of your preferred ethnicity would be the right thing to do since you know so much about the deficiency of the Yoruba culture. You can also stay home and not go to church. The world is spoilt with choices; you can even decide not to have anything to do with a Yoruba person rather than expressing your buffoonery.

A real Nigerian, first of that shouldn’t be your name. rather ‘A real…..’ whatever your ethnic group is. I don’t know who damaged you, but what you said, tells a whole lot about the kind of human that you are. Sweetheart you are beyond damaged, I hope your generalization of a particular ethnic group doesn’t blind you from an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity/blessing. To Yoruba churches preaching about money like you put, darling I don’t know what church you have attended, but like I was raised you don’t go church humping and no one can force you do what you don’t want to do. I’m a Christian; born and raised in Christ Apostolic Church of God (C.A.C) and my Pastor (Pastor Joshua Owoeye) preaches and teaches about love, foundation of a good Christian home and you know what before he asks again to give towards upgrading the church, he is the first one to give. C.A.C worldwide about two year ago bought over 20 acres of land that was built on, called C.A.C village. ONE FOLD ONE SHEPHARD

So…Of all these top pro-10% grandmasters , none of them has succeeded in proving this “yoyo” wrong with accurate biblicate facts. Na only to blab “i have read Bible 36 times, i have PhD”. One even said he gives Freeze 24 months to live…..Bullying, threats, emotional blackmail,…..
Why can’t this one up here call out his fellow pastors the 2 Chris who are divorced and the Otobolizer “who sleeps with women”? He even got a court case in London regarding some financial irregularities

All the daddy GO’s and Mummies in the Lord should respond to Freeze. (I think Freeze is a douche bag still) Cursing and shaming him rather than provide biblical answers is hollow. I want to fly First class on Emirate to Singapore but, I cannot becos, the price is heavy. Why should I then give my money to the likes of Fatoyinbo Biodun of Coza to buy more Gucci sweats and shoes the price of which can buy land in Ikorodu? The body of Christ especially in Nigeria had better come up with a proper response. People are beginning to ask question and questions we should ask

Well said. Instead to respond with biblical facts they respond with insults. It’s so exhausting how most Africans do not even take a minute to analyse and hold people accountable. Starting from ourselves, family members, politicians, church leaders. All we do is quote selected Bible passages trying to present God as only concern with what we can give. Little or no focus on the love and forgiveness preached in the Bible. It’s quite a shame that century after century African remains backward. While many are not very educated, a very huge proportion is. It’s time for each and everyone to rethink on our way forward and not be swayed by threats or brainwash.

Me too I don’t care for Freeze. And it angers me Pentecostals are making this a ‘Freeze’ thing or think it’s a heretic movement. I myself have argued the concept of tithe on other blogs years ago after I actually read my bible. Many theologians know this as well. So Freeze is not saying anything new. He probably pilfered from these people verbatim, lmao.

Nigerian pastors are yet to provide a convincing argument. Just raining fire and brimstone, lol. Nigerian pastors humble yourself and read your bible. The bible says my people perish for lack of knowledge. Open that bible and read it. It is so embarrassing that what the world knows the church for today is money and not Jesus. Pentecostalism needs to be very careful. As Catholic indulgences in the 16th century became unbearable thereby heralding the Reformation movement, soon Pentecostalism would lose its savour and this time around it might not even be a reform of Christianity but an outright deviation and distaste for God and religion. There is a reason Jesus said the very elect will be deceived- the so called ones who said they healed the sick, raised the dead etc. Who are the people that claim to do the aforementioned, is it me…an ordinary church member? It is you so called pastors, bishops, ministers of God. Realize that the love of money is the devil’s weapon..the root of all evil. So put down your pride and read/study your bible.

I would thread softly on calling men of God names,no one of them have pulled a gun in church asking us to pay tithes, many people writting on this issue over the years have not paid any tithe neither did they contribute to buying private jets for these Pastors, why are they now killing themselves on this issue? By the way I still pay mine and have no single regret doing so. Finally, no one forced anyone to pay tithes. I know what God used men of God to do in my life which I could not have been able to pay for, the more people are fighting paying tithes on social media men of God are moving forward without their tithes so why all the noise?

    • Ajala & Foodie

      December 1, 2017 at 5:49 pm

@ Kathy, I will thread softly at calling anyone names period!!! Regardless of ones occupation. Even the Bible says “ Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope you have. But do this with gentleness and respect”. 1 peter 3:15. However, in case you missed the point here, the supposed man of God here is the one issuing names and insults. Not only has he not been able to give an answer for why tithing is necessary or important, his response definitely lacks gentleness and respect. Come on we Christians need to start acting better and holding our leaders accountable when need be.

    • Tony

      December 1, 2017 at 8:43 pm

So we can question everything but a man of God? Our mentality is just overwhelming. The expectation is here is to refer to the holy book, new testament on which Christianity is founded to provide answers. Instead curses and insults are instilled in people unfortunately for usual selfish reasons. Let’s be very critical and communicate with God. He always listens.

What I don’t understand is why are so called Christians running around looking for a Pastor to slap Freeze down? Has Freeze become a god that he must be addressed? O Christians, where is your faith? If your bible preaches on tithing and you believe in it and it works for you, why should the words or opinions of a mere human being sway you? Why are people like this? Do what makes you happy and gives you peace!!! No human being should ever have the power to tell you how to relate with your God. After all, whether you pay tithes or not, it is your money and you can do whatever you want with it.

  13. Tola Foluade

    December 1, 2017 at 9:09 pm

Christian wake up!!! Its high time we actually woke up. We have been duped for too long with this wrong doctrine on obligatory tithe paying. I am not against giving but I am against this obligatory tithe paying as it is not scriptural. Malachi 3:10 was specifically addressed to the Levites. It was not addressed to the Body of Christ in general but for years we have been hood winked into this obligatory tithe paying by being threatened with a curse. Why would God sacrifice His only begotten Son for us and then turn around and curse us because of money? Think about it? God loves a cheerful giver and He says we should give what we have purposed in our hearts to give, We have the free will to support God’s work not by obligation. I actually used to pay tithes but have stopped for almost 5 years now. I rather take that 10% and sow to ministries who have been a blessing to me and those who I genuinely see helping the less fortunate and I also use some of that money to help the less fortunate myself as I am led. God is still blessing me even though I don’t give my 10% tithe to the church as I refuse to continue to finance the excessive and extravagant life styles of some of these men of God, I am amazed that instead of giving sound biblical responses to Daddy Freeze, the men of God who have answered him are resorting to insulting him. It just goes to show who they really are at the core. If Daddy Freeze is wrong, why not lovingly correct him with sound biblical answers, rather you resort to insulting him because he has exposed you all and now you cannot continue to defend your entrenched positions now that revelation has come on tithing thanks to God using an unlikely person like Daddy Freeze to lead His people into the truth about the tithe issue. Daddy Freeze posed some questions which led us all to actually go and actually read our Bibles and have come to realise that we are being duped. Ask yourself why these men of God have come out kicking and screaming? It’s not because they love us and want to see us blessed. It is because they don’t want to loose their source of funding and will fight tooth and nail to defend it. Why have we relegated our Christianity to men of God anyway? Can we not also hear from God by seeking Him for ourselves on this tithing matter? The anointing is not for an exclusive few. If we will all deepen our personal relationship with God, we will not be at the mercy of some of these men of God who just want to fleece God’s sheep and hide behind titles to dupe unsuspecting Christians who are too lazy to read their Bibles and have relegated their entry to heaven to men. I once was ‘blind’ to their gimmicks but thank God I now see. Hallelujah. I pray that the eyes of your understanding will also be enlightened to this truth. Give by all means to support the Body of Christ but refuse to be hood winked into obligatory tithe paying to finance the lifestyles of men of God whilst you and your household wallow in poverty and they swim in riches. Wake up!!!

Think about this…Catholics do not pay tithes but the Catholic church is THE richest church on the face of this planet. Do you know why? Their members give freewill offerings and are happy to do so cheerfully. They are not forced to pay any obligatory tithe. Catholics are not walking under a curse because they don’t pay tithes. Infact the ones I know are flourishing so much and they give freely to support their church, widows and orphans etc

    December 1, 2017 at 10:58 pm

in fact, i am so disappointed at we Christians. when God ordered the levites to pay their tithes in his house so as not to rob him(God), are u telling us he was only talking to the Levites?
OK, if so, in the book of exodus when God wrote the 10 commandments for the Israelites, will you say those 10 commandments was only meant for the Israelites only?, then if so, biko go and kill, steal, furnicate, worship idols…e.t.c. because the commandments were only meant for the Israelites, and you are naija . you really need to meditate and understand your bible biko….
now let’s go to the new testament, when Jesus went up to the mountain and his disciples followed him, in the book of Matthew 5 vs 22 to 31, Jesus was directly speaking to his disciples, he told them about not having a dispute with your brethrens before coming to the altar to present ur gift(offerings and tithes). he also told them not to lustfully look upon a woman for it is furnication already. he also told them about the issue of divorce ….and many more…
since Jesus was only talking to his disciples, then i guess when you furnicate, or keep dispute among yourselves, or divorce as u like, then it is not a sin to God, since he was talking to only his disciples???
my point is, we should understand that the bible is meant for this generation especially. just because God ordered the levites to pay their tithes in the book of Malachi 3 vs 8 to 10 , doesn’t mean he was talking to only the Levites. He was also talking to me and you because he knows that the scripture will surely be passed on to this present generation.
pls, pay your tithe and seal your lips…
Mr daddy freeze is searching for popularity… the other time, he wrote on why he doesn’t respect Beyonce and paste it on a blog….does Beyonce even know if there is any creature called daddy freeze? the man is looking for popularity.

We are no longer under the levitical priesthood Hebrews 7.
The Old Testament law is a covenant between God and Israel. The New Testament is a covenant between God and the church. The law was given to last only until the coming of Jesus Christ Galatians 3:19. We are now justified and blessed by faith, not by works. Galatians 3:11,23-25. Galatians 3:10 says for all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written ‘cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the book of law.
If you want to abide by the laws of Moses, go ahead, but you must complete the remaining 612 of them. James 2:10, Galatians 5:3. The Israelites couldn’t even keep these laws, that was why it was a necessity for a new covenant.

The early had this same conflict, were they supposed to mix Jewish laws with Christianity? They circumcision debate was the highlight of this mess. After consultations with the Holy Spirit, it was agreed that we the gentiles should do the following…

19 “Therefore I conclude that we should not cause extra difficulty for those among the Gentiles who are turning to God, 20 but that we should write them a letter telling them to abstain from things defiled by idols and from sexual immorality and from what has been strangled and from blood.

everybody should know that Jesus came to die for our sins, and not our tithes.
just because Jesus died for us doesn’t mean tithes and offerings are not relevant.
there was no part of the new testament that stated that tithes is not relevant

It is important because they have used emotional blackmail and subtle threats to obtain the tithe. I am so ashamed that none of them can defend collecting the tithe. Worse still, they consume the tithe forgetting that it is holy and has specific uses. Anyway I made up my mind a long time ago to support missionaries and not these pastorpreneurs. We will be judged if we misuse our resources to fund people’s lifestyle.
Most of these men of God called themselves so don’t be scared of holding them accountable.

@Kem, you got it the other way round. Others were to bring tithes and offerings so that Levites (who were the priests and had NO other job) could eat. It was also so that there may be supplies in God’s house meaning things like food pantries, soup kitchens, free education etc for those who cannot afford it in modern terms. The tribe of Levi was the tribe of priests and they didn’t go out to work. I just wanted to untwist this biblical fact. The food pantries etc is my own interpretation of modern ways that a God intended for “meat to be in His house”. In all I’m glad there is better conversation on BN than some preachers can engage in with Mr Freeze. It makes for a better society as God is the only one that cannot be questioned. The pride of some preachers has been brought out by Mr Freeze. It’s a proud thing to think no one should question you.

I attend a predominantly Caucasian church with thousands of members. Guess what, they hold business meetings and give account of what was collected and how it was spent. Judgement must begin in God’s house. The Bible says that God’s foundation is sure and has ONLY one seal, God knows those that are HIS but let everyone that names the name of God depart from iniquity. A curse curseless shall not come on my head for those who turn preachers to Demi gods. They can be questioned and they should hold annual business meetings and explain how the money they are collecting is being used. People are not seeing any societal good works comparable to the quantum of money they take. That is the reason why Mr Freeze’s comment has generated interest. Show me your faith without works and I will with my works show you my faith. It’s all in the Bible.

If we want to go by the Old Testament on tithes, why don’t we look at Deuteronomy and the laws in it. See if we want to stone adulterous women, control dressing, inheritance etc we cannot just be fixated on Malachi 3. It’s part of the Old Testament so let’s look at 2 whole chapters dedicated to false prophets in Ezekiel and see if that’s palatable as well. The fact is we have a new and better covenant (Testament), built on better promises, mediated by Jesus who is the complete fulfillment of the laws that we couldn’t keep.

The fact is you can’t be preaching that heaven is where your mansion is but collecting money from widows and the poor and buying Bentleys and jets when so many are hungry in your congregation. Nigerian roads should reject those cars like Balaam’s donkey if they could speak just for once. Where are the works??? Every small town here has numerous programs spearheaded by the church to take care of the poor. Why are we so mean to one another? I’ve heard Nigerians talk about Corrie Ten Boom, who I believe founded the Salvation Army. She said, ” the measure of a life is not in its duration but in its donation” and another Christian author wrote ” Our CRITICS are the unpaid guardians of our soul”. Let there be a soul searching not a curse issuing on this man. He has parents too. Cursing him does not solve this problem.

Nigerian churches should start showing their faith by their good works not the tokens they currently do. The rat race to own universities that members cannot afford for their children has to stop. Stop putting your family members as heads of the American and Pound, I mean British zones. It’s subject to misinterpretation of mammon worship. Again curse curseless will not come on me.
